Those of you who were following election results online on Tuesday know that the Rocky Mountain News jumped the gun and called the CD-5 race for Jeff Crank for a brief time.
Rocky editor John Temple explained what happened to Colorado Confidential:
It’s correct that I miscalled the 5th in favor of Crank. The incorrect headline was up for about 10 minutes, to my knowledge. Based on the number of precincts reporting and the trends, it did not appear to us that Lamborn could win. Obviously we were wrong. Our mistake came because we didn’t understand El Paso County’s approach to absentee ballots. When the absentees were put into the mix, they shifted the results and of course we changed our call. The incorrect results never appeared in the paper. We regret the error.

The Rocky also doesn’t think there were any real problems with Denver voting on Tuesday.
Both articles the Rocky has run related to issues with Denver voting have downplayed the problem. They have basically accepted the party line.
The Post got it right and even there, it is fairly well know that the problems were greater and more widespread than has been reported, even in the Post’s story.
….wonder if he can fix the problem of Denver voting problems for Ritter the same way he bought the legislature.
Why does Gill have to pay, or why would you incinuate such a thing. Im sorry, but I take voting seriously and this needs to fixed, and no matter what you financially inept republicans believe, throwing money at all your problems will not solve them.
Look at what is happening with the slush fund trailhead group set up and coordinated by the governor, benson and coors cash; it didn’t win any of it primary races and it’s going to go down in flames just like the Beauprez campaign that is being funded and supported by the elites.
MONEY IS NOT THE ANSWER TO ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS. VOTING CONSERVATIVES OUT OF OFFICE IS!
One of the main ideals of conservatives is to lesson the amount of money being wasted, by reducing government. This doesn’t seem to happen much with all the liberals out there pushing their agendas, plus a president that is more worried about towelies across the ocean than the energy crisis here.
But in a perfect conservative world the government would be miniscule, therefore there would be bare minimum social programs in force (strictly for the helpless), and every able body would be providing for themselves. The desire to better oneself would take front stage in the common man’s mind. Thus pushing the economy to even greater heights.
In a liberal perfect world, 100% of all wages would go to the government to subsidize the countless social programs. (I still don’t understand how this ideal is so longed for by you libs) But in the long run you will need to revert to a communist style government to force the people to complly because nobody will want to work. There is no incentive to work if all you are doing is paying for the LAZY!
Gecko, you seem to have your terms and ideologies confused. The “perfect liberal world” you describe is actually Marxian socialism; liberals don’t in fact advocate for no private property or wage ownership. Instead, liberals want such wacky things as a functional public education system for the rich and poor (advocated by such noted communists as Thomas Jefferson, among others), some federal regulation of corporate monopolies and raiding of the environment (that crazed anarcho-syndicalist Teddy Roosevelt was on that train), and limited government intrusion into people’s bedroms (socialists like Bob Nozick were all over that stuff). My, what an evil agenda — I’m twirling my mustache as I type. Conversely, the perfect conservative world you’re describing is really libertarianism, precious few of whom seem to be residing in the Republican party these days.
Go Blue, I am sure your righteous indignation over this voting problem would be equally strong if Republicans were disadvantaged.
Go ahead. Continue to set up the reason for Ritter’s defeat in the Fall (should that happen). I am sure you’ll be whining soon when someone continues to challenge Ritter’s record ad District Attorney.
Politics is sure tough when you can’t win on your terms, isn’t it? My suggestion: build your base on good ideas, and let’s see who comes up on top.
…..half of everyone in Colorado Springs woke up Wednesday morning thinking the same thing.
Aren’t political campaigns petty enough for us to be worrying about the Rocky calling it wrong? Sounds like another Christian Coalition hit piece to me.
This headline will be just another exaggerated “endorsement” Crank will pull out in his next race – whatever that will be. He can add it to his resume, too.
My bigger complaint with the Rocky was that when I was looking for election results online, it was slow to post any results, compared with the Post.
“The incorrect headline was up for about 10 minutes, to my knowledge.”
Just looking at the thread, I first posted “Crank Wins” (based on the Rocky’s call) at 10:36; 20 minutes later, when they had moved the checkmark of victory by Lamborn’s name I posted that the headline on their home page still read “Crank Victorious,” and I recall that the story was shortly taken off the home page after that. As someone else noted, the photo of Crank and his wife was still posted by the “Lamborn Wins” story when they brought it back up and the caption still said Crank won – that guy posted that after midnight.
They’re human, so no big deal, but as long as media outlets race to be the first to break the news of victory in close elections we’ll see more missteps in the future.
I’m going to go ahead and call the November 7 election for Lamborn. Based on the number of precincts reporting (0% to date) and the trends, it does not appear Fawcett can win.
I’ll also be the first to break the news that Doug Lamborn’s keen legislative skills are causing waves in DC, as he’s brought real conservative reform to Congress. In another scoop, Lamborn is the first sitting US Congressman to be nominated for sainthood.
You heard it here first.
Actually I blame you for believing the media (tongue in cheek) I remember seeing your post “Crank Wins” and laughing. If you looked at the County web site none of the Absentee Votes had been counted yet for the entire district.
The Absentee Vote in any race represents a huge number of voters.
I don’t live there so it wasn’t worth it to try to find more than one site reporting the tally. The Rocky and the Gazette were the two I checked out and at whatever time I checked the Rocky’s figures had more precincts reporting. At that point I just hit Refresh every few minutes.
The Rocky was foolish for calling it without the absentee votes.
