  1. Good morning …

I was surprised to read the Washington Post op-ed about Montezuma County politics from a recent immigrant with “blue” politics:

Out here, red or blue politics doesn’t matter as much as how you treat your animals. It begins with a complaint about the lack of broadband and needing to go to a library for wifi. Then continues:

“Around here, you don’t have the luxury of isolating yourself in the bubble of your own beliefs. Living here forces you to come face-to-face with a spectrum that includes gun owners, ranchers, libertarians and lesbians. If you’re uncomfortable with that, it’s not going to be fun.” ….

Does it matter how my ranching friends voted? Not a lick. I care more how they treat their animals and how they steward the land. They might say the same about me.

What an overly romanticized view of the effects that “red” voting have on that so-called “stewardship” of the land or husbandry of animals . . .and on the sharing or not of natural resources that ought to be protected /available for all . . .Yes, it’s sweet that you’ve learned to ride and your dog is appreciated . . .but how people vote and show their values DOES matter. . . .That doesn’t mean you have to go to war with neighbors and friends and talking across divides is the only way a democracy truly can work . . .But to pretend that it is a matter of indifference whether votes go “blue” or “red” is to trivialize the very real consequences different sets of values have on the legacies we leave . . .

Sorted by “most liked,” the first hundred or so comments focus on challenging the writer’s perspective and privilege, or speaking about the wonders of Rep. Boebert as their member of Congress.
