  1. The Schiltrons of Her Justice

    *

Her voice was small but mighty

And was heard the world around.

    The schiltrons of her justice

Marched in concert with her sound.

    She freed a billion people

    Before laying down her sword.

And her dying words still urged us

To keep fighting on for more.

Was there ere so small a shoulder

    Behind so long a pike?

    The schiltrons of her justice

Fought for straight and gay alike.

    For Ruth Bader Ginsburg never

Ran from battle with our foes.

No matter that the odds were long

    Her shield withstood their blows.

    The dark oppressor’s legions

Fought her in every town and vale.

But her small voice still rallied us

In the kitchen, field and jail.

    Her fight for human dignity

Has now ended with her death.

But the schiltrons of her justice

Will fight on to our last breath.

–Bob Ewegen, one of her pikemen

      1. "Was there ere so small a shoulder behind so long a pike?"

Our differences seem quite small now, kwtree.  This fight will determine the fate of our common dreams for a generation.

      2. Kwtree, mr. Bowman or another of you technically adept types:

Wikipedia has some great shots of a Scottish schiltron in full battle array.  You might want to post one here.  This is written on an Amazon Fire and it's hard to do that stuff with it.

        1. This was the only one I found in the public domain. It’s a schiltron getting their orders at the Battle of Bannockburn. I just kept getting hung up on “Men in Kilts” 😉

      1. You're welcome, John.  But unlike my countdown songs, this isn't a parody, it's an original poem.  A schiltron is like a phalanx, only rowdier, which seemed right for our crowd.

          1. Battle hymn itself recast John Brown’s body lies a mouldering in the grave.

A basic eight foot iambic pentameter abcb rhyme scheme is fairly adaptable.

This is basically abcb.  I wrote it after waking up at 2 a.m. with most of the thoughts already formed and wrote it in about 30 minutes.

She was an inspiring woman.  But in the end there is no answer to e.e. Cumming’s challenge ” How do you like your blue-eyed boy Mr. Death? “

  2. Tweet of the day:

    Charlotte Alter

Biden, in an embarrassing senior moment, recites the divergent biological methods of two possible vaccines (molecular structure versus immune system enhancement) and also details the chemical specifics how they have to be stored and transported.

    Awkward!

  3. Catastrophe and its consequences:

If SCOTUS strikes down Obamacare the Democratic Party should redo the ACA as universal health care. It is such a simple and positive outcome, perhaps we should hope for it.

If SCOTUS strikes down abortion rights, the Republican Party will lose women from now to eternity. Will abortion be prohibited in ALL states, or just conservative ones? Perhaps it will be a situation where you can never get a 12 person jury to convict a woman or her doctor.

Voting rights is the intervention where Conservatives have put their biggest butts on the scale. This is where Democrats need to produce solid protections across the country.

        1. There is a whole list of quotations from members of the Republican caucus in the Senate.

Several are up for re-election.  I hope a variety of groups are able to have campaigns of "their word OUGHT TO BE good."

"who do you trust — someone who states a principle and stays with it even when partisan interests conflict, or someone like Cory Gardner who said … xxx …. and then, when the next occasion came up, didn't follow the same rule."

      1. The Republican justification hasn't changed from 2016 to now.  It is simply "Because we can"

Blunt argued the situation is different because the Senate and the White House are ideologically aligned whereas in 2016 they weren’t. “In the tradition of the country, when the Senate and the president were in political agreement, the judges went on the court. When they weren’t in agreement, they didn’t,” Blunt said on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.”

    1. It’s very hot dark, moist, and foul-smelling where Cowardly Cory is hiding out. Periodically, he is squeezed out into a golden bowl, and must fight his way to float on the surface among the other Turd Way politicians.  When a reporter or constituent approaches, he hides out in The Lair Liar again.
In the distance, tiny fingers skitter over Twitter keys.

Cory considers this process to show “political resilience”.

  4. Americans of good conscience, regardless of their affiliations must ask themselves if they will be happy living in an autocratic police state. Democracy WILL NOT SURVIVE four more years of the McConnell, Barr, Trump wrecking crew.

This has become the fascist nightmare many of us anticipated. Many even predicted it. Small comfort…we are in trouble.

We must win this election by an uncontestable margin, although, I am not sure even that will be able to stop them.

    1. Some conservatives may be swayed by the consideration of consequences.

If Trump nominates and the Senate moves to confirm, consider what will happen the next time Democrats are in a position to exercise power:  possibly as soon as January 3, 2021.

      • elimination of the filibuster
      • expansion of the Supreme Court to 13, without ANY procedural protections to minimize the timing of the expansion and allow Republicans a chance to name justices,
      • new states … at least DC, probably Puerto Rico, and if people are REALLY pissed, the 3 Pacific Island territories as a 3rd,
      • the expansion of the House to better reflect populations, with a representative for any excess over the population of the smallest state. If Wyoming is the norm, the House goes to about 525, and California gains 12 seats,
      • and as many additional poison pills as can be dreamed up.

Between the announcement of RBG's death and noon (eastern time) the next day, AP reported

Democrats raised more than $31 million in the hours after Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, demonstrating how the liberal icon’s passing and the contentious nomination fight that lies ahead have already galvanized the party’s base.

The jaw-dropping sum was raised by noon Saturday after news of her death broke late Friday, according to a donation ticker on the website of ActBlue, the party’s online fundraising platform.

Add more donations not through Act Blue, but directly to candidates or other organizations like Emily's List, NOW's PAC,

        1. Surely you jest!

As a 6-yr. citizen of Canada, (a Colorado voter), and 13 yr. resident of BC, judging by BC folk who don't even want Albertan tourists (who bring their covid), much less Americans to visit, I can't imagine such a thing.  But these days, anything is considered possible.

In my wildest dream fantasy, the US would become 5 new countries:

the 3 west coast states + Hawaii; the inland West's 8 states + Alaska; the (old) South; the Midwest + plains states; and the Northeast.

          frown

              1. Yes. And as John notes above, CA stands to gain 12 House seats in the coming decade.

Every time you split CA, they gain 2 Senate seats.

Electoral College clout increases as well.

                  1. Could you imagine a 2020 conversation with one of the framers of our Constitution?

"But sir, what about the year 2020 when the state of California will have 40 million people?"

Founding Father: "What and how many???"

        2. "adding the Canadian provinces….."

Try for Newfoundland. There still are people there who thought they got screwed in the 1949 plebiscite when Newfoundland finally joined Canada, by a narrow margin.

  5. When the republic came to rest on the shoulders of a terminally ill 87-year-old, the republic itself was terminally ill. That's what they'll write.

Well, time to read that Shelby County and Ledbetter dissents. Again.
