  1. Live music is probably my #1 quality of life enhancer. My wife and I saw Swedish prog/metal gods Opeth in early March. At that point the shit hit the fan and there's been nothing since.

Until last night! Itchy-O, a 57-member avant garde music group from right here in the big city, did a drive-in show at a parking lot near the Mission Ballroom on Wyncoop. People watched from their cars, which are well distanced from one another, yet they found a way to give people the immersive experience for which the group is renowned. The music is simulcast on radio, although I had no trouble hearing through the car windows.

The show was just spectacular. Check out a couple of vids on the website. If it looks even remotely interesting, do yourself a favor and check it out. They're doing two shows a night each Friday and Saturday from now until the end of the month. Tickets are $100 per car, cheap AF if you get some friends/family to go with and throw in.

    1. Opeth was my last show before the shutdown too.  25 on the calendar either canceled or rescheduled.  The drive-in shows just won't do it for me, mostly, but Itchy-O would be worth it.  They are a happening for sure.  Thanks for the review!

      1. You're welcome! Re: Opeth, I saw setlists online, but dared not believe I was actually going to see Harlequin Forest performed in person until it actually happened. Terrific show.

        1. It was excellent.  Fourth time I'd seen them.  First time at the Ogden a number of years ago.  Also saw them in Vancouver, by sheer luck of timing.  And the Red Rocks show in '17 was amazing as well.  Damn, I miss shows

          1. Yeah….the people who do them are missing them, too. I haven’t played outside my studio since Feb. 29th.

My home audience of 3 loves the private performances…but they don’t pay very well.😁

            Someday…

              1. One can tell that it’s “fundraising time” again on PBS. Last evening, Channel 12 played a great concert: Pink Floyd live in Venice, Italy, 1989, before 200,000 people. The band was on a floating stage in the lagoon opposite St. Mark’s Square. There have been bootleg versions for years. But, for PBS, the surviving band members donated their own sound board music and light show.

I do a few live concerts. Last one was 2019, with Calexico, at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Was supposed to see the Mike Love/Bruce Johnson version of the Beach Boys earlier this month at the venue on Ruby Hill. Cancelled of course.

  2. Got an email this morning advising that Sally Boccella, our candidate for the SD-23 seat (thankfully, Vicki Marble is term-limited), is hosting an online town hall on 8/19 at 6:00 pm. I'm pretty sure one of her guests is a Colorado Polster. Hint re: guest's identity: the title of the town hall is Possibilities of Hemp.

Anyone who's interested in checking it out can register on the Events page of Sally's website.

    1. Do you have an idea of what Sally's chances are?

Will the 2A, the covid-19 and climate 'hoax'es carry keep that district red?

Or are the constituents ready for some sanity?

      1. Marble won in 2016 about 58%-42%. Sally's running against Barbara Kirkmeyer, long-time Weld County Commissioner. I'd say it's at best an uphill battle. Kirkmeyer's had some statements and positions that ought to be called out, but voters of that district re-elected Marble despite some outright embarrassments.

        1. Hoping for a blue wave built on changing demographics and Biden-Harris coattails. Sally is an excellent candidate on the issues. She is getting more campaign help than past D candidates.

Not my Senator but I am hopeful for her.

      2. Do you have an idea of what Sally's chances are?

Poor, I'm afraid. SD-23 is a strangely shaped district. Down here at the southern end (Broomfield area) a Dem can do well. However, the vast majority of voters are in beet-red portions of Larimer and Weld Counties. As 2Jung correctly noted, Marble cruised to victory last time despite saying and doing a mountain of bugfuck insane things.

I'm generally donating only where the money has a reasonable chance of helping produce a win. Sally's campaign, despite the near-zero chance of success, it the exception for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, Sally is top notch and would make a great state senator. Second, the last two senators for this district have been Vicki Fucking Marble and Shawn Fucking Mitchell, and the next senator figures to be Barbara Fucking Kirkmeyer. That's a cavalcade of disgrace that simply must be opposed, odds be damned.

    2. It will be an informative event – and I'll be broadcasting from Kentucky where I'll be visiting hemp farmers and discussing the outlook for hemp.  Duke, I'll be grabbing a burger and homemade pie at a little hole-in-the-wall in Rockcastle County while I'm there!

          1. I never visit that area without bringing back a case of the Estill county original. It should actually be called Ale-eight-one, I believe, but Ale 8 was the moniker we used as children.

            1. I had planned to drive so those kinds of activities would be possible but my schedule got compressed and I'll be flying commercial to Louisville.  🙁

              1. I am pretty happy to face a future that no longer includes flight. I never kept track of the mileage but it added up over the years to be enough to last me a lifetime..

I am very lucky to have that luxury.

Say hey to Jackson County for me if you pass through there.

  3. Just this morning 46 states has received from the Post Office a letter saying that the USPS will not be able to get the mail-in ballots delivered on time for the election.

    1. The example letter at Washington Post was for Arkansas, and said

The purpose of this letter is to focus specifically on the deadlines for requesting and casting ballots by mail. In particular, we wanted to note that, under our reading of Arkansas's election laws, certain deadlines for requesting and casting mail-in ballots are incongruous with the Postal Service's delivery standards. This mismatch creates a risk that ballots requested near the deadline under state law will not be returned by mail in time to be counted under your laws as we understand them. …

Accordingly, the Postal Service recommends that election officials use First-Class Mail to transmit blank ballots and allow 1 week for delivery to voters. Using Marketing Mail will result in slower delivery times and will increase the risk that voters will not receive their ballots in time to return them by mail….

To allow enough time for ballots to be returned to election officials, domestic voters should generally mail their completed ballots at least one week before the state's due date. So, if state law requires ballots to be returned by Election Day, voters should mail their ballots no later than Tuesday, October 27

Pretty amazing that processing of mail for IN-STATE delivery requires a week.

  4. Welp….

Trump administration to withdraw controversial nominee for Bureau of Land Management

Pendley, who currently serves as the agency's acting director, has repeatedly denied the existence of climate change and once falsely claimed that there was no credible evidence of a hole in the ozone layer, according to a CNN KFile review of his social media activity, writings and public appearances.

Pendley, a conservative activist, commentator and lawyer, was appointed by Interior Secretary David Bernhardt as BLM's acting director in July 2019.

      1. WAPO also had it … saying Pendley's Senate confirmation testimony would be a negative to Cory and Steve Daines.

As the days dwindle down to a precious few, I'm thinking they will simply re-up Pendley as "acting," claiming the Vacancy Act clock starts over since there was a nomination.

Or perhaps there is a minion groomed to become the "acting" for the BLM — there are some at Interior at "Assistant Secretary" level who have been confirmed, who perhaps would like an "acting Director" line on their resume.

    1. "no credible evidence of a hole in the ozone layer……"

President Ronald Reagan disagreed with Mr. Pendley when the president signed the Montreal Protocols international environmental treaty in 1987.

        1. Never could have imagined Finnish “rednecks!” But I think I’ll stick with AC/DC Live on the River Plate, or Live at Donington, for “Thunderstruck.”.

  5. Seventy nine days before Trump's fall

Seventy nine days 'til we kick his rear.

The Orange Usurper's days grow short

And each mailbox makes him scream in fear!

  6. One of my favorite observers, Lucian K. Truscott IV, clarifies why Kamala Harris is an excellent pick:

With Kamala Harris, the get-out-of-the-way generation steps forward

    He concludes:

In Kamala Harris, Biden picked a woman who stands for everything that Trump is not. This is the perfect year for her to run for vice president. All she has to do is stand there to be a rejoinder to Trump’s racism and sexism and xenophobia. Her very presence on the Democratic ticket is to say, look at me. This is who I am. Look at yourselves. This is who we are. We are the future. We are America, not them.

  7. Here's my first shot at the combined Dem ticket anagram:

JOSEPH ROBINETTE BIDEN KAMALA DEVI HARRIS

KEEP HIS RARER BALD HABITS IN MIND. VOTE JOE.
