SD32 Heading for Vacancy Committee

( – promoted by Colorado Pols)

POLS UPDATE: Romer’s pending run for Denver Mayor has been no secret, and we would expect his resignation from the State Senate to come at any time. With the Denver Mayoral election in May, there’s no way he could run a real campaign while also serving in the legislature.

—–

This is second hand info so I cannot swear to its exact accuracy. But apparently Chris Romer has let it be known he intends to resign from the State Senate soon in order to focus full time on the mayor’s race.

This will create a vacancy election for his seat. I don’t know who all is looking at that vacancy but the district cuts a wide swath through central & SW Denver.

Some names living in the district:

Andrew Romanoff – is he willing to go back to the legislature at this point?

Beth McCann, Lois Court, and Jeanne Labuda – all current State Reps living in the district. Lois was just elected to be House Caucus Chair so I doubt she would leave current spot.

Jennifer Mello and Fran Coleman – Romer’s 2006 primary opponents. I think both have moved on to other things though.

Ann McGihon – former state rep.

several party activists also live there.

    1. Or more to the point, where is his voter registration listed? Since he sold his house last summer, he may not still have the residency requirement.

Of course, this all assume Romanoff would even want to seek the appointment, which we kind of doubt.

      1. Good point that he might not live in the district any more.

I just think that, despite the primary fiasco, the GA with Romanoff isn’t exactly the worst thing in the world. Especially if results hold in the House.

        But yeah, probably not.

    1. and Jeff Hart.

There are a couple of forums coming up for people interested in running for the seat over the next couple of weeks. We should see who the serious candidates are in those.

      1. he might actually win the mayoral race DD. I shudder at the thought.

Am I the only one who questions this generational political family stuff? From the Kennedys to the Bushes on the national stage to the Romers here at home, what other than a name and lots and lots of money gives these people such cache in politics?

            1. I am vain enough to believe I’d be a pretty good legislator.  I’m also realistic enough to know that I would suck as a candidate.  I know a few former journalists who served in the lege and only one, Martha Ezzard, was really good.  And even she was more a PR person, John Love’s press secretary, than a journalist.

              1. is an example of a good journalist and fine man who was also a really awful candidate. And unlike Art, V, you actually present yourself very well as a public speaker.

                1. art was an absolute master of education issues but flailed as a candidate for the school board.

I am fine at public speaking.  But I suck at the art of suffering fools gladly.  And that is a prerequisite for a good candidacy;-)

              2. But it would drive you nuts trying to work with idiots. After your long career, your bullshit meter is set far too low to allow much patience with the likes of Steve King, just to name one example.

Think of having to spend 12-15 hours a day with a bunch of people just like the Beej!

      1. Some people think Ken’s like Jeezus. Never been one of them, myself. When he ran for the Senate the first time, in 2000, he made a big deal of refusing to take PAC money. Meanwhile, IIRC, most of his campaign staff payroll was offloaded to the state party; of course, the CDP was bringing in PAC money hand over fist (this all being pre-A27, pre-BCRA days).

          1. They picked up pennies from the road as they walked across the state.  One of my favorite trophies is one of those pennies, in plexiglass, for my work on ref c.

    1. before running for the same office again.  Does the same rule apply to an appointment, i.e., Ken Gordon?

Ken burned a few bridges in the AR/Bennet primary but came back on board to support Bennet.  Does he actually live in 32 now?

        1. but apparently it is four years, which is one senate election but two house terms.

I have seen former Senators run immediately for House seats, which is fine since term limits only apply to a given office.  Don Ament did that, but didn’t actually go back to the House since after his election Bill Owens named him agricultural commissioner.
