But yes- according to wikipedia the defense for defamation is it was true and it wasn't publicized only for the wrong reason.
MSNBC/Odonnell would be trying to prove the former, a plaintiff would be trying to prove the latter.

So far the Drumpf team hasn't come after him for what is assumed to be the very reason you mentioned: they don't want a lawsuit and discovery process so they've decided to weather the storm for now.

As a public figure, Trump would have to prove actual malice and\or reckless disregard of the truth. But as MJ noted, the defense would be entitled to wide-ranging discovery. It will never happen, for that very reason.
