"Sanctuary City" Billboards Hit Denver Area

  • by: Colorado Pols

From 9News.com:

A group called Billboard Colorado has posted full-size billboards at the intersections of 21st and California and 6th Avenue and I-25 in Denver to bring attention to the issue.

One billboard reads “Mr. President, Mr. Governor, Mr. Mayor, They did not die for illegal sanctuary.” The words sit next to three soldier helmets sitting on rifle butts with their bayonets buried in blood.

The second billboard says “Welcome to Sanctuary City.” Critics have said Denver’s immigration policy is a sanctuary for illegal immigrants as the city does not routinely take undocumented residents into custody for violating immigration laws. Mayor John Hickenlooper has said the city does not have a “sanctuary policy” and that immigration law is supposed to be enforced by federal authorities.

  1. Somehow I doubt that ClearChannel would have allowed that gutter language on one of their boards.

It does hit home, though, got to admit that.

  2. I have to back the Constitution and the first amendment’s protection of freedom of speech.  That said, there is something despicable to me about using images of the battlefield graves of American soldiers to advance a partisan political agenda.  What was it they said to McCarthy?  “At long last, sir, have you no decency?” If there is a pool going on how much longer Boyles lasts, I pick August 1st as his last radio daze.

  3. Although I agree with free speech and their right to express their point of view, it’s pretty low-down to exploit the soldiers who are now dying in Iraq and Afghanistan for any political cause.

  4. Dwyer: Get a clue… If Boyle’s Arbitron ratings weren’t sky high his ass would already be on the streets.

Good men died in battle to protect the sovereignty of this nation. That’s the point, my friend. If you can’t see the equation between open borders and the dangerous diminution of that sovereignty, then your jingoism rings indecent; your ignorance of the promise of this nation of laws is immense.

  5. Church Wardhill’s billboards are almost certainly fakes, but I don’t have a problem with his last one.  At least that one doesn’t exploit our troops.

  6. The fact that private citizens are engaging in this activity should be an eye-opener to the politicians.

There are a LOT of people out there who are not happy with how easy the politicians have been on illegal immigrants…..enough so that they’re willing to contribute money to this, admittedly bandstanding, effort.

Unless politicians begin to get a clue on this issue, a number of them will be left on the sidelines, post-election, wondering what happened.

  7. Socrates,

This effort will backfire among the vets and military personnel in Colorado.  They won’t appreciate their voices being co-opted into this issue without their consent.

  8. RedFox: I’m a vet and I appreciate the billboards emphasizing a point of view I happen to agree with. My voice has not been co-opted at all. So, I can speak (as a vet) for myself, thank you.

  9. Socrates (“the fact that private citizens are engaging in this activity” blah blah blah): get real. Peter Boyles and Clear Channel are milking this for all it’s worth, just like Tancredo is. It’s all about the ratings for both of them. Once Americans get tired of this sudden “crisis” and move on to the next one, Boyles will move right along. First it was the murdered little girl in Boulder (I can’t even remember her name, but Boyles probably has it tattooed on a butt cheek by now), then Boyles was all over Ward Churchill like white on rice, and now suddenly he’s Mister Anti-Sanctuary.

Untl the next ratings opportunity comes along. Just like Tancredo was all Mister Term Limits until he realized he had to switch to something else to keep earning big bucks off the public.

I love how those billboards are so ridiculously worded. Even Boyles’ supporters are going, “Um, what the heck do they mean exactly?” Boyles is usually fast with a phrase, but he must have thought these up before he had his morning coffee.

I have to laugh at all the Boyles supporters who coughed up $1 and $5 to buy a billboard at 21st and California that virtually no one will see or care about. What a pathetic joke. They should have spent the money to buy some more lawn chairs and beers for the Minutemen.

  10. Goodness, TancredoWatch, where’d you get the inside track on what folks are saying/thinking about the billboards. Do a poll, did you? Get out and talk to all the “…Boyles supporters…” did you? Keep on laughin’ buddy, and, hopefully, you can keep on laughin’ through the ’06 elections where–SURPRISE!–the issues represented by the billboards will be played out at the ballot box.

  11. God, I can’t wait for the elections in November. After they’re done, it won’t be in anyone’s interest to bring up immigration policy, and we won’t have this contiuing debate over and over and over and over again. ‘course, the House could cut through all of this by approving the Senate’s bill. But then again, space aliens could cut through all of this by landing in Washington, too. Either one is just as likely.

  12. The military families I know agree with George.  They do not appreciate the politician’s refusal to uphold the law while they risk their lives. All this so Democrat and Republican businessmen can get rich off cheap labor.  Like these weak politicians, those who profit from these ilegal aliens should be treated as the traitorous scum they are.  Keep the billboards coming, at least until John McCain and Ted Kennedy work to get them outlawed.

  13. The military families I know are on George’s side.

  14. Let’s get one thing straight.  This is about billboards.  It is not about immigration.  The problems that this nation faces with immigration are  immense and need to be discussed dispassionately and intelligently.  The billboards are neither…to say nothing of the postings here.

To Remarkable and the other vets:  Your service is appreciated, your opinion respected and you are alive to give it.  Battlefield graves are sacred.  Expropriating the images of such graves to promote one particular political agenda, is, in my opinion, disgraceful.  We honor graves of military killed on the battlefield.  There are no billboards at Fort Logan or Arlington.  The flag flies 24/7 in the Taos Plaza to honor the men of the Bataan Death March.  The Arizona, even the Alamo, are places of quiet reverence.

  15. Dwyer raises a good question which serves as the acid test.

Question: Would the 21st and California billboard be appropriate at Ft. Logan?

Answer: Soldiers’ blood should NEVER be used to paint political propaganda.

The billboard takes issue with three politicians and uses the overly spun rhetoric “illegal sanctuary”. But the fact is that reasonable people disagree on the issue. The billboard overlooks that fact and dares to claim the moral high ground with dead soldiers.

It’s really quite disgusting when you think about it.

  16. Talk Radio has people calling in who think the 6th Ave billboard was put up by the city and that it is a really a welcome sign for anyone seeking santuary for any reason.  The billboards should come down. This whole effort is so awful, that I am beginning to feel sorry for Boyles.  is it possible that, in his old age, he was set up?

  17. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

    …………….

I don’t about other veterans, but this is but one reason why I served.

  18. Oh… and if I wasn’t clear enough, what I mean to say is:

“No, the billboards do NOT need to come down.”

You have the right to be offended, but your delicate sensibilities do not trump the right to free speech.

  19. Remarkable:  The very first sentence I posted on this topic reiterated my respect for the 1st amendment and the right of free speech to put up such billboards.  I vote for the billboards to come down because they are confusing, because they  are disrespectful of honored war dead and because evidently the one on Sixth Avenue is having the opposite effect of what was intended.  The only reason I’d like to see them stay up is that they make Boyles look like a fool. That is my opinion, protected by the first amendment.

And,  as for my “delicate sensibilities,”  I got ’em, right here, buddy.

  20. Well, in addition to having the right to be offended, you also have the right to be confused.

I’m not confused in the least about what the signs mean.

And to be honest, I had no idea that Boyles was connected with them.  And it doesn’t matter in the least, anyway.  You clearly have issues with Boyles.  I don’t.

  21. Let me clarify about the “confusion issue.”  The sign on sixth avenue advertises Denver as a Santuary City.  I understand the irony.  However, it is being reported that some people are literally taking the sign at face value and think the City of Denver posted the billboard to advertise itself as a “Santuary City.”  The possibility is that the sign itself could attract illegals of all ilks, rather than just promote a political viewpoint.

I really don’t like the idea of exploiting American  sacred icons..which is what the imaging of battlefield graves does.  That’s my so-called issue.

  22. So, Hangemhigh, Hammer, George…

You guys are veterans so I definitely respect you for that, and you have the right to express your point of view as a veteran and someone who has served our country.  But you have to also respect the other veterans and career military people (like my dad and many others in my family), who don’t want their fallen comrades being used to support one side of a political issue.

How would you as veterans feel if “the other side” co-opted veterans for their point of view?  I imagine you’d be pretty upset, wouldn’t you?  So… somehow it’s fair game for one side and not the other?  You have to be careful not to be hypocritical here.
