Tipton Challenges Salazar to 29 Debates

  • by: Colorado Pols

Republican Scott Tipton, who attempting to unseat Democrat John Salazar in CD-3, is offering a challenge that is probably a little unrealistic to expect a sitting congressman to agree to in such a short period of time. We’re not making excuses for Salazar?- we’re making excuses for anyone who is a sitting congressman. Asking them to attend 29 debates while they’re still in session is a bit much.

Anyway, click below for the full press release…

Third Congressional District Candidate Scott Tipton sent a letter to current Rep. John Salazar Thursday morning asking him to agree to a series of 29 debates over the next 5 months, holding one in each of the 3rd Congressional District?s 29 counties.?

?

In the letter, Tipton stated,? As rural Coloradans, I think we can both agree that the folks of Manassa, Cortez, and Walden should have the same opportunity to hear our views as the folks in larger communities such as Pueblo and Grand Junction.? Tipton continued saying, ?With over five months remaining, we have a chance to raise the level of discourse in our race to a level that people in the 3rd Congressional District deserve.??

?

?Debates between political candidates are an important part of our political system dating back to the beginning of this country. I can?t imagine a reason why John wouldn?t want to make the effort to reach out to the citizens of the 3rd District. The issues facing us today are no less important than when Lincoln and Douglas engaged in their famous debates during the 1858 campaign. I think we owe it to the voters and I look forward to hearing John?s commitment so we can go about scheduling these events,? added Tipton.

  1. 29 IS a bit much.

But I’d bet that Salazar won’t have the guts for even one.

He’s very vulnurable on the issue of illegal immigration, where he has come down on the side of the lawbreakers who want to lie and cheat their way to US citizenship.  This does not play well with the electorate.

Nice ploy Tipton- now let’s see some substance.

Nice attempt to copy someone else’s screen name.  Why don’t you pick one of your own?

  3. Getting around to 29 debates is going to put a lot of mile on the Jaguar.  Also, that is probably not the best vehicle to be going across Monarch or Wolf Creek in a snow storm to get to a debate.

    Beam me up Scotty.

  4. Oh come on… Quixote has a point. October may not be a good month to be on Wolf Creek Pass in a Jag, but September isn’t all that iffy, and it is usually a beautiful drive in June, July and August. Plenty of time to get in at LEAST 16 debates accross the 3rd.

Besides, are you trying to say that Salazar won’t leave the Valley if the snow starts to drop in mid-October? I hope he does just that! Tipton will definately be able to take the seat then.

  5. I guess the only thing you can do is challenge your opponent to 29 (count them, 29) debates when your opponent is a popular incumbent who has a 4 to 1 edge over you in fundraising and your national party has pretty much written you off financially….. I almost feel sorry for Scott Tipton.  The GOP really should have run Jane Norton as the sacraficial lamb in C.D. 3.  Or Marky Boy, who has one of his houses located in Garfield County and can claim residence.  (Then again, using that criteria, Holtzman can run for Prime Minister of New Zealand as well.)

  6. For a guy who can’t raise money, that’s a lot to expect in the way of free publicity.

He might have to get his name in the paper the old-fashioned way.

  7. From the looks of things to this point, the strategy over in the Salazar camp is to keep John out of the district so he can read from a prepared script and avoid adressing his constituent’s problems with his positions on immigration, spending, etc. Too bad little brother Ken can’t stand in for him at the debates. Ken is pretty bad but next to John he looks Clinton-esque.

A hundred bucks says that John runs away from Tipton and these debates just like he did in 2004 with Walcher. He is an empty suit and his handlers in DC know it.

  8. You all are forgetting something here: As Ken Salazar’s brother and patron saint of the trial lawyers and unions, John doesn’t have to address the issues the people of the 3rd care about.  He doesn’t have to defend his lousy record. He doesn’t even really have to campaign.  All he has to do is sit back, keep his mouth shut, and hope that people confuse him with Ken again in 2006 as they did in 2004.

  9. Mr. Salazar should do his constituents a favor and agree to the debates.  He got a free pass in his first run due to having the jackass Walcher as his opponent.

I say he should let the people of the 3rd hear him defend his record and talk about what he’s actually going to do for them this time around.

  10. Naw, President Bush actually has cattle on his ranch.

The Salazars, despite their insistence on wearing cowboy hats, don’t know which end the horns are on.

  11. Of course, if Salazar agrees to 29 debates, Tipton’s next strategy will be ” John Salazar is never in Washington representing the people!”

Can the Tipton campaign afford to send him to 29 debates?

  12. Scott has his hands full, that is for sure…he is articulate, passionate, and he actually knows the issues facing the 3rd.  He is in Pueblo nearly every week, and is still able to cover the rest of district, though it is the 2nd largest district geographically in the country.  That is dedication, and that is representation.

Of course Johnny represents Pueblo very well…at least one constituent anyway.  Johnny has to report in to Mr. Rawlings (Publisher of Southern Colorado’s paper of record, Chieftain.)  I understand Johnny calls in several times a week to make sure that Mr. Rawlings’ water concerns are safe.  Now that is outstanding representation!

  13. Dirk seems like a decent guy but I think the “best political instincts in the state” is quite a stretch. I think he is lucky to be working for a great candidate who has a lightweight for an opponent. Tipton is going to surprise a lot of folks. Salazar and Co. are underestimating him. Remember McInnis in ’92!

  14. I think that Mr. Salazar, (actually, both of them) underestimates the effect that his position on illegal immigration will have on the electorate.  He’s very much on the wrong side of that issue, and it’s going to come back and bite him.

A lot of politicians figure that the Hispanic vote will make a difference, but Hispanics have never voted as a bloc, so they also tend to overestimate that factor.  What they haven’t calculated, mostly because they’re out of touch with the voters, is how angry a significant portion of the electorate is over the Senate’s proposal to give illegals amnesty and allow that group to, essentially, cheat and jump their way to the head of a line they don’t deserve to be in starting out.
