  1. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/27/us/politics/supreme-court-gerrymandering.html

Thank you, Bernie Bros, for giving us Gorsuch and Kavanaugh.

When they give you lemons …. well, you know the rest of the cliché.

    # 1 – We need to keep our Democratic-controlled legislature at all costs next year.

    # 2 – If we get that eighth district, we need creative map makers who will draw 6 Democratic-leaning districts and pack all the Republicans into CDs 4 and 5.

    1. on your #2 — Won't happen. Just last year, our voters said no.  Ballotpedia has the reminder:

On November 6, 2018, Colorado voters approved a constitutional amendment establishing an independent congressional redistricting commission. The commission consists of four members belonging to the state's largest political party, four members belonging to the state's second-largest party, and four members belonging to no party. Commission members are appointed by a panel of three judges selected by the Chief Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court. The amendment requires at least eight of the commission's 12 members, including at least two members not belonging to any political party, to approve a map

      1. That ballot initiative was a big mistake.

We need to repeal it, especially in light of what the Supreme Court said today. When the other 49 states set up similar independent commission, we should too. Until then, why unilaterally disarm…..

    2. Didn't realize that Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump were "Bernie Bros". But whatever – you just continue on with your circular firing squad and see where it gets you.

As a factual matter, when McConnell kept  the SCOTUS seat open and refused to vote on Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland,  Bernie Sanders was not running for President.

      1. Just can't stand a dissenting viewpoint, can you, MJ?  I believe R&R is noting the fact that Bernie Bros, Jilliots and other useful idiots helped elect Trump — who appointed Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and about a hundred like them to lower courts.

It's worth remembering as the oldest and whitist man in America takes the stage tonight.

        Go Kamala!

        1. Nobody really cares about ocasio blahblahblah.  But Biden would be be 78 if elected, 86 if re-elected — if he was still alive.  Given that male life expectancy is 78, are we really limited to octogenarians?

Amy was splendid last night.  Let us hope Kamala shines tonight.

        2. Come on, R&R. Everyone knows The Examiner is a right-wing rag. They'd love for Dems to pick a raving socialist to go up against their boy Trump. I hope we don't take the bait.

    3. Life is sometimes complicated.

It's not that you must be an a-hole.
      You choose to be.

Is it in your nature, frog?
      Or is it something else?

Your suggestion would fly according to SCOTUS.
Sadly, it would not work in Colorado.

      And why 4 AND 5?
      5 alone.

    4. McConnel refused to vote on Obama's nomination for SCOTUS. He would have refused a vote for 4 years if Clinton had won.

It would be hard to gerrymander Colorado very far, and gaining a single seat isn't all that useful.

What if New York gerrymandered the hell out of all federal and state districts. It could go from 15, 9 & 3 (Dems, Competitive and Reps) to 21, 3 and 3.

But, one other thing about gerrymandering. If you work to hard to maximize, you have a large number of districts only a few points away from competitive. You're safe if there is a 2 pt swing between the parties. Changing demographics, base turnout, or political changes, can boost the swing to 5 or 8 its, then the wave can sweep over your big "safe" levee.

Trump-driven anger & Demographic changess are on our side in a bunch of states.

        1. I thought their strongly held religious beliefs and convictions commanded them to always require brown folks to show two forms of approved, valid proof that they’re citizens???

  2. SLAPP Victory Affirmed on Appeal – Attorney’s Fees Awarded as Sanction

Today the Colorado Court of Appeals upheld the District Court ruling – dismissing the company’s complaint and awarding me attorney fees necessary to defend myself against this frivolous lawsuit and the company’s groundless appeal that followed.

This case demonstrates, quite clearly, the type of under-handed tactics employed by a reckless plaintiff (and its counsel) that abuse our court system and sought to punish speech. Such tactics have no place in our democracy. The appellate and trial courts both made the right decision, and the company will now pay its own attorney fees and mine as well.

I am pleased that the publicity this case generated helped prompt the Colorado General Assembly and Governor Polis to enact an anti-SLAPP law. It is my intent that no other Coloradan who wishes to participate actively in government or on matters of public interest will be forced to endure what I have.

I want to thank my attorney, Steve Zansberg, at Ballard Spahr, for his exceptional work, and all the many friends, colleagues, and even strangers, who have supported me throughout this long ordeal.

    1. We are on opposite sides a

lot, PK, but you are nothing less than a hero for taking  on the legal goons and standing up for the first amendment.  And bless Steve Zansberg and the Ballard Spahr firm for upholding the highest ideals of the law.

Some days the sun does shine!

    2. Congratulations on standing up for what is true and right. Not only was justice served but as you note, your cause has been picked up by the state to prevent similar abuse in the future. yes

    3. The only thing that could make the passage, finally, of robust anti-SLAPP legislation in Colorado better, is this outcome for you.  Congratulations, and thanks for your advocacy.

  3. When you think you're playing 3-D chess, but you're really just badly playing checkers.  Oh, and, The Democrats!

Pelosi bows to McConnell on border aid bill

Speaker Nancy Pelosi formally bowed to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in a weeks-long battle with the GOP over the border aid bill, saying the House will take up the Senate's version of the relief package.

The move caps four days of havoc amid a contentious debate within Pelosi's caucus over how to respond to the mounting humanitarian crisis.

In a stunning reversal, Pelosi halted a planned vote on the House Democrats' version of the border aid bill as she and her deputies faced a revolt by a group of more than 18 Democratic centrists [emphasis mine], who vowed to tank the bill on the floor.

In a high-profile surrender in a faceoff with McConnell, Pelosi sent a letter to her caucus explaining her rationale.

"The children come first. At the end of the day, we have to make sure that the resources needed to protect the children are available,” she wrote. “Therefore, we will not engage in the same disrespectful behavior that the Senate did in ignoring our priorities. In order to get resources to the children fastest, we will reluctantly pass the Senate bill."
