So we all know Michael Bennet has been more than prolific at raising money from Wall Street (only five members of Congress have him beat in this category), but does he draw the line at taking money from executives of a company that has been indicted for fraud?
From today’s Wall Street Journal:
http://online.wsj.com/article/…
In Colorado, incumbent Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet was accused by his Democratic challenger Andrew Romanoff of doing Goldman’s bidding in return for cash. “An indicted firm is no place to turn for campaign contributions,” said Mr. Romanoff, who called on Mr. Bennet to return the $6,300 he has received from the Goldman executives. A Bennet spokesman didn’t respond to requests for comment.
Unlike some Romanoff supporters on here, I don’t have a problem with any/all PAC money and it’s sure not the reason I support Romanoff and want Bennet gone, but surely there has to be some line drawn. I don’t think any member of Congress should take money from a business they directly regulate – if you’re on the banking committee, no bank $$, Health & Human Services, no pharma or insurance $$ etc. I’d also like to see Congress have to report real-time their contributions from lobbyists & PACs and have a public listing of meetings with or fundraisers hosted by them. I don’t care if the money comes in, I just think there should be a lot more sunshine on who’s giving to who and when

Obama. Maybe you should be asking him to return all that dough.
Gregory Craig carry it over for him.
The whole Goldman Sachs thing is just another smoke screen to make the administration look good for the 48 hour news cycle. Then it will slowly sink into obscurity while nothing significant is done.
To some extent, I think that’s correct, but Wall St. reform will affect Goldman Sachs just like everyone else. I don’t know if you and I have the same ideas about how to go about reforming Wall St., but if it does pass, I don’t think people will be able to say nothing significant was done.
Getting the derivatives market under control is the number one priority for Obama. He says he’ll veto anything that comes to his desk that doesn’t contain a way to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself.
He doesn’t need the dough and Goldman should be treated like a pariah by any and all smart Dems. Let the GOP congresspeople be alone this year in taking Goldman cash and doing its bidding. When weeks from now they’re still trying to sell the Tea Party on the phony “bailout fund” they can also pretend that taking Goldman’s money doesn’t mean anything.
The Party of No always says yes to Wall Street and to the Payday loan industry, cuz the GOP is for freedom!
AR is saying that Michael Bennet was bought for 6300?
The true slander comes directly from Andrew. That’s been apparent for some time.
to demand opponents return contributions when a donor is tainted with scandal. The amount doesn’t matter. This is SOP, Ray, it’s neither silly nor slander.
suggesting that Sen Bennet was compromised over 6300 is silly
Democrats got plenty of traction demanding Republicans return less money from Jack Abramoff and his cronies.
630k maybe, 6300 silly. Simply asking for it to be returned should have sufficed.
I guess the true test will be if he votes for financial regulatory reform. This is normal, but it also furthers a narrative that AR’s campaign has insinuated repeatedly; Bennet is corrupt because of his donations.
give it someone else.
Giving it back to Goldman seems counter productive- donate it to a homeless shelter or a consumer credit counseling non profit.
JTB- 9 diaries, 8 bashing Bennet, 1 C&P of some polling data.
I know you are busy, but where’s the dairy about why you support Romanoff? Where’s the diary about policy solutions to the problems facing small business and struggling homeowners? Hell, even a diary about how campaign finance could be regulated post-Citizens United would be useful. Finance reform, re-regulating Wall Street, foreign policy, national security, green energy, – and dozens of other issues would all make for useful and interesting diaries. Are you able to agree that we’ll all support the D nominee which ever it is, or are you one of the agitators that would rather have a R if we can’t have your D?
Does that mean Norton should return the $1000 she took too? Goldman does its shopping at both sides of the aisle.
The Ar people aren’t concerned about them right now anyway.
Its interesting that Andrew threw fit that his pac activities exemplified in fliers were circulated at an assembly.
If I were rhe Bennet campaign then I would rturn the 6300, and post like AR does how disturbed that they are that his integrity has been challenged over such a small amount of mooney.
They will probably return the money without criticizes AR, and AR will crow how he made Bennet admit that he did Goldman’s bidding for 6300.
What is meant here is that Goldman Sachs was sued.
Not to defend Goldman Sachs, but in our system of justice, the burden of proof is on the accuser (the gov’t). Until liability has been proven, I’m not sure it’s reasonable to call money donated to a campaign by individuals paid by the defendant, tainted.
I do love the spin, though.
AR and supporters look for a toilet. A total non-story in need of a flush!
