  1. Republicans want to raise the federal debt ceiling to nearly $10 trillion. Just two short months ago, Congress raised the federal government’s borrowing limit.

The federal debt keeps climbing because of continued deficit spending and the government’s insatiable borrowing from the Social Security trust fund.

If the new budget proposal passes, the House will have raised the federal borrowing limit by an additional $653 billion, to $9.62 trillion. It would be the fifth debt-ceiling increase in recent years, after boosts of $450 billion in 2002, a record $984 billion in 2003, $800 billion in 2004 and $653 billion in March. When Bush took office, the statutory borrowing limit stood at $5.95 trillion.

Where is the outrage among any Republican in office anywhere in the country, Colorado included? Beauprez apparently approves of this. Does Holtzman?

  2. power corrupts (Duke-stir, Ney, DeLay, Frist…etc.); Absolute power corrupts absolutely (Bush).

They are NOT conservatives.  They are theives robbing the public tresury to lard up their wealthy corporate masters.

  3. Harper’s editor says six members of Congress caught in Watergate party scandal

    RAW STORY
    Published: Tuesday May 9, 2006

    Print This | Email This

The Washington Editor of Harper’s magazine, Ken Silverstein, continues to allege that six members current and former members of Congress attended parties sponsored by Brent Wilkes, the man named as an unindicted conspirator in the case of Rep. Duke Cunningham, who was sentenced to eight years in jail for accepting bribes.

These nebulous parties are said at the very least to have involved “occasional card games with friends” (according to the lawyer for recently resigned CIA #3 “Dusty Foggo,” also implicated in the scandal) or at worst, were venues for prostitution and bribes.

Formerly an editor for the Los Angeles Times, Silverstein has previously reported on intelligence, political corruption and ties between oil companies and repressive foreign regimes. Excerpts follow.

  4. I hear this term “Both Ways Bob” being bandied about (sorry for the alliteration).  Could some please explain in bullet points how he got the name?  I assuming it’s not because he’s gay, but I wouldn’t be surprised by a conservative representative who was in public anti-gay but who was in fact, gay.  We all remember the Anti-Gay, but gay mayor of Spokane WA, last year?

  5. he wants it this way and he wants it that way.  he’s against things (that he voted for), and voted for things (that he claims he’s against).  He’s a corporate whore, republican-establishment puppet.

  6. What a great story in the Rocky for the 7th CD.  I will support whoever wins the primary, but Peggy came off looking much better.  During the interview she went to see her dying father-in-law, and Ed made fundraising calls.  What a clear contrast.

    Full story here.

Best Quote: “Democrats in the 7th District have a track record of electing women. Lamm likes to point out that nine of the 10 state senators who represent districts in the 7th are women, and that eight of them are Democrats.”

  7. Great article!

I love that Lamm says how great it is running with the last name Lamm.  It’s so true.  What a huge advantage for her, and it ain’t going anywhere.  Some people on this blog have said that voters just confused her with Dottie Lamm, to which I say: who?  People think Dick Lamm, not Dottie, and they know Peggy’s not Dick.  See John Salazar and George W. for the power of association with a great name.

Then the article says people know Ed’s name because of the home builders!  Is there a Democrat in the state that actually LIKES homebuilders?

  8. That article sucked. We are about to see a lot from the Rubenstein campaign, and Barge barely mentioned him. the Rocky is turning into a tabloid.

  9. and another one down, and another one down. Another one bites the dust!

GOP-returning corruption to Washington.  Family values… whores and poker games, bribery, fraud and abuse.  Any questions?

Guilty plea sharpens focus on Ney
    By Jackie Kucinich
    and Josephine Hearn
A former top aide to Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy yesterday for his efforts to influence public officials to benefit clients of former Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The development brings the lawmaker a step closer to being engulfed in the widening scandal.

  10. GEORGE W. BUSH
    Work Experience

LAW ENFORCEMENT: I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol. I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver’s license suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been “lost” and is not available.

MILITARY: I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL. I refused to take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use. By joining the Texas Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam.

COLLEGE: I graduated from Yale University. I earned a lot of “gentleman’s C’s,” which means F’s that are turned into C’s for sons of prominent Americans.

PAST WORK EXPERIENCE: I ran for U.S. Congress and lost. I began my career in the oil business in Midland, Texas in 1975. I bought an oil company, but couldn’t find any oil in Texas. The company went bankrupt shortly after I sold all my stock.

I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using taxpayer money.

With the help of my father and our right-wing friends in the oil industry (including Enron CEO Kenneth Lay), I was elected Governor of Texas.

    ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR:
I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas the most polluted state in the Union. During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America.

I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in borrowed money.

I set the record for the most executions by any Governor in American history.

With the help of my brother, the Governor of Florida, and my father’s appointments to the Supreme court, I became President after losing by over 500,000 votes.

    ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT:
I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week.

I am the first president in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record.

I spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury.

I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history.

I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period.

I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market.

I set the all-time record for most days on vacation in any one year period. In my first year in office, after taking off the entire month of August, I presided over the worst security failure in U.S. history, resulting in the disaster of 9-11.

I am supporting development of a nuclear “Tactical Bunker Buster,” a WMD. In my State Of The Union Address, I lied about our reasons for attacking Iraq, then blamed the lies on our British friends.

I set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips by a U.S. president.

In my first year in office more than 2-million Americans lost their jobs, and that trend continues every month.

I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period.

I appointed more convicted criminals to my administration than any president in U.S. history.

I set the record for the least amount of press conferences than any president since the advent of television.

I presided over the biggest energy crisis in U.S. history, and refused to intervene when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed.

I presided over the highest gasoline prices in U.S. history.

I have cut health care benefits for war veterans, and I support a cut in duty benefits for active duty troops and their families in war time.

Internationally, I have set the all-time record for the most people worldwide to simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million people), shattering the record for protests against any person in the history of mankind.

I have broken more international treaties than any president in U.S history.

I am proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history. My “poorest millionaire,” Condoleeza Rice, has a Chevron oil tanker named after her.

I am the first president in U.S. history to order an unprovoked, pre-emptive attack and the military occupation of a sovereign nation. I did so against the will of the United Nations, the majority of U.S. citizens, and the world community.

I created the Ministry of Homeland Security, the largest bureaucracy in the history of the United States government.

I am the first president in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission.

I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court of Law. I refused to allow inspectors access to U.S. prisoners of war detainees, and thereby have refused to abide by the Geneva Convention.

I am the first president in history to refuse United Nations election inspectors. (during the 2000 U.S. presidential election).

I am the all-time U.S. and world record-holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations.

My largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud in U.S. history, causing hundreds of thousands of Americans to lose their retirement funds. My political party used the Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision.

I have protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against investigation, or prosecution. In the meantime, more time and money was spent investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the biggest corporate rip-offs in history.

I garnered the most sympathy for the U.S. after the World Trade Center attacks and less than a year later made the U.S. the most hated country in the world, the largest failure of diplomacy in world history.

I am first president in history to have a majority of Europeans (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and security.

I changed U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts.

RECORDS AND REFERENCES: All records of my tenure as Governor of Texas are now in my father’s library, sealed, and unavailable for public view.

All records of SEC investigations into my insider trading and my bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view.

All records or minutes from meetings that I, or my Vice-President, attended regarding public energy policy are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public review.

  11. Shotgun —

I just read that article.  I noticed that the date of the primary wasn’t right either by BARGE.  If the RMN cannot even get the right date right, then they obviously are having troubles because of their LIAR schemes by the Republicans.

It just simply makes sense for them to not mention Mr. Rubenstein, since I remember how Bill Clinton was a longshot and won the US Presidency.  Maybe, since no one is talking about him in the media means that he is going to win in November?

Barge should include a story that includes all the candidates — nonetheless.

  12. Herb doesn’t have a shot, and the Rocky was right to not include him.

I like that Peggy focused on the issues at the Senior Center, and got right to the point when that lady asked her why she’s running.  I didn’t see Ed say anything about any issues.  It’s a real difference between them.  Will Ed still support us union guys when he gets to Washington?  Just like how he wafled about getting in to this race and wouldn’t give Peggy a straight answer about it for a year.

Also, that link that DD posted doesn’t work for me.  Maybe this one will.

  13. Bush’s Public Approval at New Low Point

    Published: May 9, 2006

Americans have a bleaker view of the country’s direction than at any time in more than two decades, and sharp disapproval of President Bush’s handling of gasoline prices has combined with intensified unhappiness about Iraq to create a grim political environment for the White House and Congressional Republicans, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

  14. From: http://www.adl.org/issue_combating_hate/10faq_extremist_online.asp#1

Blanket statements expressing hatred of an ethnic, racial or religious nature are protected by the First Amendment, even if those statements mention individual people and even if they cause distress in those individuals. Similarly, denial of the Holocaust — though abhorrent — is almost never actionable under American law. The Constitution protects the vast majority of extremist Web sites that disseminate racist or anti-Semitic propaganda.

In the United States, the First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees the right of freedom of speech to all Americans, even those whose opinions are reprehensible. In a number of recent decisions, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed that our government may not regulate the content of Internet speech to an extent greater than it may regulate speech in more traditional areas of expression such as the print media, the broadcast media, or the public square. While courts may take into account the Internet’s vast reach and accessibility, they must still approach attempts to censor or regulate speech online from a traditional constitutional framework.

  15. With country in record deficit, spending out of control on war, House and Senate Republicans agree to cut taxes for rich AGAIN by $70bn!

And they wonder why we think George Bush and the republican congress are out of touch? Republicans have the majority in both houses of Congress, the US Senate and the US House. The only way to stop this insanity is to vote against every single Republican in this November’s elections. Not a single vote.

    Hold these crooks accountable!

  16. All they have to do is raise the tax rate for every American to say what….100% or so. We’ll have the deficit cut in no time.

Bush is completely out of touch with reality. His stance on immigration and doing zero about sky high gasoline prices is the tell tale sign/final straw for me. So I agree on those points but anyone that wants to raise my already incredibly high taxes even more, can go take a long walk off a short pier……..
If any of you feel you do not pay enough in taxes, feel free to donate as much extra as you want. I’m sure Uncle Sam will definately not turn it down………
As for me, I’ll pay my fair share and no more.
    Love,
    Gecko
