Republican Jeff Crank announced that his campaign for congress in CD-5 raised $62,389?in Q1 (which was not a full quarter for most Republican candidates, since Rep. Joel Hefley didn’t announce his retirement until February). Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera announced earlier this week that his campaign had raised? $40,020 in the eight days prior to the end of Q1.

Click below for the press releases from both candidates…

Crank Release:?

In the first 4 weeks of the 5th District Congressional race, Jeff Crank is proud to announce that he has raised $62,389 in the first quarter.? The FEC 1st Quarter filing period ended March 31st.? Jeff Crank officially announced his candidacy on March 6th.? The 1st Quarter report shows that Jeff Crank for Congress ended the first quarter with $43,821 cash on hand.? Crank is pleased to receive financial support from Colorado business & community leaders like Steve Schuck, Bruce & Marcy Benson, Jerry Biggs, Gary Loo, Bruce Shepard, Steve Bigari, Chief of Staff to Senator Allard Sean Conway, and many more.? Jeff Crank for Congress? 1st Quarter report shows strong support from Republican activists in donations less than $200, and also strong support from business leaders in the district and throughout the state.? The Crank campaign is proud to report contributions from nearly 200 people.?

Rivera Release:

Colorado Springs Mayor and candidate for the 5th Congressional District of Colorado, Lionel Rivera raised $40,020 for his campaign after announcing his candidacy only eight days prior to the close of the financial quarter.

“We feel very confident about our campaign?s early momentum and the enthusiasm of our supporters,? said Rivera. ?I have worked hard for this community as Mayor and am hopeful that I will be able to continue to serve the entire 5th District as their next Congressman.?

Lionel Rivera filed his Statement of Candidacy on March 17, 2006 with the Federal Elections Commission and was allowed to begin raising money at that point. Rivera officially kicked of his campaign for U.S. Congress on March 23, 2006.

“At a time when integrity in Congress counts more than ever, Mayor Rivera has the right experience and value system to represent this district in Washington, DC.? said campaign manager Steve Truebner.

  1. lionel rivera is moving fast.  $40,000 in 2 weeks versus $60,000 in 2 months!  plus the money is all from the district.  he is def the candidate to watch.

  2. It’s interesting, I think, that Crank has 60k reported after being considered the heir apparent.  Rivera has been working hard for less than a month is closing the gap fast.  I guess there is something to be said for real experience after all, Mr. Rivera is proof of that and his leadership would be a welcome addition to the Colorado Congressional delegation.

  3. Also interesting that the Mayor has such support from developers. Shouldn’t he recluse himself from the Mayors office? I find it frightening that much of Crank’s $ is from outside the district.

  4. So Crank gets the lobbyist money, Rivera gets the developers and I suspect Lamborn will have ultra-conservative PAC money.  I wonder who will have the “real” support of the people who will actually vote in the district?  I am pulling for an upset and hope it’s not the more money candidate but the candidate with more sense (pun intended) ;o)

  5. Yes, and Crank’s especially weak. He and Hefley have been working this for over a year now, and that’s all they got? Tsk, tsk.

Whoever heard of a lobbyist that can’t raise money?

  6. Arm, the people are those who are citizens who live in this nation legally. Majority rules. The candidate that gets the most votes wins and doesn’t try to steal the election by recounting falling chads.

  7. What is missing from this discussion is that it was announced yesterday that the money leader in the 5th CD for the first quarter was … wait for it … Jay Fawcett.  He apparently raised $80k+

For probably the first time in history, a Dem raised more money in a quarter in the Fifth CD than any Republican.  No, it probably will be the only time this year, but it is still rather meaningful…
