Colorado Pols Political Tourney - The Sweet 16

We’ve moved on to the Sweet Sixteen in The Colorado Pols Political Tournament.

We’ve updated the bracket (CLICK HERE to download the updated PDF) and picked a few upsets, so click below for more commentary and to view the images of each side of the field.

Note: Here’s how to fill out your bracket: Consider the Political Tournament a race towards a big final political office. But in the meantime, in each matchup, consider the two candidates in a hypothetical statewide political race.

For example, if Mark Udall and Scott Renfroe were running against each other for a statewide office, who would win? You choose the winner of that race and move them on to the next round.

  • In a battle of prosecutors, we like Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey over the dull-personality of Attorney General John Suthers. This sets up a showdown between Morrissey and Gov. Bill Ritter in a battle between Denver’s last two District Attorneys.
  • State Treasurer Cary Kennedy beats Walker Stapleton here, as we expect to happen in real life in 2010. More intriguing is a battle between Kennedy and former House Speaker Andrew Romanoff in the next round…a race that could play out in a 2014 gubernatorial primary.
  • We think the more moderate Rep. Don Marostica would beat former State Sen. Mark Hillman in a statewide race.
  • While Rep. Jared Polis beat Will Shafroth in last year’s three-way primary in CD-2, we’d give Shafroth the edge in a bigger race.

  • The biggest race in this round was between Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry and former Rep. Scott McInnis. This race may soon play out in a gubernatorial primary, but in a statewide general election the teacher would beat the student. But in the next round, would the former CD-3 Rep. McInnis beat the current CD-3 Rep. John Salazar?
  • No other surprises on this side of the field, but we’re looking forward to the matchups between Sen. Michael Bennet and Rep. Ed Perlmutter, as well as the battle between former Gov. Bill Owens and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.
