Colorado Log Cabin Republicans: Trump Turns Them Upside-Down (In a Good Way)

Donald Trump’s momentum with gay Republicans grew Tuesday with the endorsement of the Colorado Log Cabin Republicans, the latest affiliate to defy the national organization’s refusal to back a presidential candidate.

The Colorado chapter joins state groups in Georgia and Texas as well as those in Los Angeles, Miami, Cleveland and Orange County in backing Mr. Trump, despite the Log Cabin Republicans PAC’s decision last month to withhold its endorsement…

Colorado Log Cabin Republicans President George Gramer pointed to Mr. Trump’s outreach to LGBT voters, such as the nominee’s inclusion of Silicon Valley mogul Peter Thiel as a speaker at this year’s Republican National Convention.

Michelangelo Signorile of the Huffington Post reports on a small problem with GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s display of an LGBT rainbow flag in Greeley last weekend, which you can see in the image above courtesy the very same Colorado Log Cabin Republicans–perhaps some of you already spotted it:

…the flag was upside down.

The rainbow flag is a series of six stripes, all having very specific meaning according to the creator of the flag in 1978, Gilbert Baker. The top stripe is red, symbolizing life, and the bottommost stripe is violet, symbolizing spirit. Trump’s flag was upside down, even though the handwriting was right side up. In other words, whoever scribbled on it didn’t have an awareness that the flag was upside down when he or she wrote on it.

Trump took the flag from a supporter who happened to be conveniently placed up near the stage, making it seem as if he simply saw it in the crowd and wanted to take it on the stage. But it appeared to be folded up when handed to him, so it’s hard to believe that Trump could see exactly what it was ― unless he knew ahead of time that someone would be handing him a rainbow flag. It should be noted that, after internal debate, the national Log Cabin Republicans organization has declined to endorse Trump:

The Log Cabin Republicans announced Saturday it will withhold its endorsement of Donald Trump, which marks the first time in 12 years the organization hasn’t endorsed the Republican presidential nominee.

Log Cabin announced the decision in an organizational statement from its political action committee, which begins with citing former President Reagan’s famous quote, “Trust but verify.”

“So cautioned former President Ronald Reagan who inspired our founding in 1977 — and it is a solemn understanding of that very instruction from our 40th president that compels Log Cabin Republicans to withhold endorsement from our Party’s current nominee,” the statement says.

Nonetheless, the organization reportedly gave its state affiliates leave to make their own endorsement–and Colorado’s LCR chapter did so. We’ve heard that this decision wasn’t unexpected to those close to the organization, but that is has resulted in a great deal of infighting behind the scenes among the state’s politically conservative LGBT players.

And in a week, this decision will either be shown prescient or great folly for Colorado’s Log Cabin Republicans.
