The “Gabe Evans Tour of Destruction” continues.
If freshman Rep. Gabe Evans (R-Ft. Lupton) stops by your business/nonprofit for a photo op, it usually means that you are in deep trouble. Evans often shows up at local venues when a policy that he supported in Congress is going to cause major problems for said organization. Last week he visited the Weld County Food Bank in Greeley, which is starting to panic about its ability to serve the food and nutrition needs of the community with the federal government shutdown threatening the availability of SNAP (food stamp) benefits.
As we noted yesterday, things are about to get a lot worse. 9News checks in with food banks in Broomfield and Weld County for the grim news:
The impact is expected to be widespread, as 65% of clients at Broomfield FISH rely on SNAP benefits to supplement their grocery needs or for their primary source of food. The safety net those benefits provide may disappear as soon as Nov. 1 if Congress fails to reach a funding agreement by this Friday.
“The potential for 600,000 Coloradans or more to lose their access to SNAP benefits come Nov. 1 is a five alarm fire,” said Democratic Rep. Joe Neguse, as part of a community meeting with different partners.
Neguse expressed frustration with the political gridlock in Washington.
“I am outraged by what is happening in Washington D.C.,” he said. “We are now on week four essentially of the Republicans refusing to reopen the House. We haven’t had votes since Sept. 19. It is absurd. It is outrageous.” [Pols emphasis]
There’s no ambiguity about the federal shutdown situation from Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Boulder). So what does Gabe-sh Evans have to say?
The math is daunting. For every meal a food bank provides, SNAP provides nine meals, according to Edmunds.
“The food bank network as a whole does not have the resources to bear that burden and it doesn’t sound like funding is coming anytime soon,” he said.
Edmunds said Evans provided updates on the voting process and potential plans in the works, but the outlook remained uncertain. Evans did not agree to speak with 9NEWS following the meeting. [Pols emphasis]
“It feels like at this point right now, the plan is that there is not an immediate plan to provide funding for SNAP and other social safety nets,” Edmunds said.
Maybe CO-08 residents can ask Evans about this issue at his next town hall event…except, Evans has yet to hold a single town hall event since winning election last November.
In the absence of any sort of public statement from Evans that isn’t about “fake news media” or some other blather about how this is all somehow the fault of Democrats, we’re left with only one answer:
Gabe Evans just doesn’t care what happens to the most vulnerable of his constituents.
