At least that’s what Gallup says today:
Texas Gov. and presidential candidate Rick Perry’s comments on Social Security, which include calling it a “Ponzi scheme,” appear to be a non-issue for most Republicans. However, they could cost him support with independents should he ultimately win the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. As many Republicans say they are more likely to vote for Perry for president because of his views on Social Security as say they are less likely — 19% each. Among independents, 12% are more likely to vote for him and 32% less likely…
It’s been noted that President Barack Obama’s favorability with independent voters is not that great either, but Perry’s comments on Social Security could prove much more of a motivator to opposition for independents than any (factual) claim against Obama. The gap between the receptivity of partisan Republicans to radical comments like these, versus the larger electorate’s revulsion to them, is a key factor in other recent polls showing that, while Perry is ahead of and widening his lead over primary Republican opponent Mitt Romney, Obama beats Perry.
Colorado Republicans, with the sting of Ken Buck’s loss fresh in their minds, are backing Romney–for all his warts and flip-flops, even against the wishes of the base–for a reason.
