What you can do to fight for progress this week (August 2)

It’s a moment we’ve been dreading for years, and it’s getting closer.

Late last week, all three of Colorado’s Republican members of Congress joined an amicus brief calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision which established the abortion rights on which generations of American women have depended. [1] A 6-3 right-wing majority on the Supreme Court and an abortion ban “test case” out of Mississippi set to be argued later this year have made this once-unthinkable prospect a real possibility.

In a post-Roe America, Colorado’s leadership role in protecting abortion rights will put our state on the front lines of this defining issue of our times. Overturning Roe would have the immediate effect of banning abortion in 20 states, and women who need abortion care they can’t get in their home states will be forced to seek refuge in Colorado. Even worse, abortion rights in Colorado could be subject to attack by litigation from anti-choice states.

That’s why it’s so important for Coloradans to be organized and ready to defend abortion rights in Colorado no matter what happens with Roe v. Wade when the Supreme Court issues its decision next June. Our friends at the Keep Abortion Safe campaign have developed the Countdown to a post-Roe America resource page with information you need to protect abortion rights here in Colorado or wherever you are.

The redistricting commissions continue touring the state throughout July and August! This week, the commissions are hosting important community outreach meetings in Littleton, Centennial, Golden, and Colorado Springs before heading to Trinidad and the Western Slope for the weekend. In every part of our state there’s a simple progressive message: preserve natural communities of interest while protecting the rights of the disadvantaged and historically oppressed. Click here to sign up to be notified about upcoming redistricting hearings in your area.
