It STILL Goes Too Far

Two years ago, Amendment 48 was trounced by a nearly 3 to 1 margin. In spite of this monumental defeat, the backers of the amendment decided a round 2 was necessary. The bar was set high with the victory No on 48 attained 2 years ago. Not only did the campaign win by a large margin, but we won every single county in Colorado. Attaining that same margin of victory either by percentage or in counties won is a tall order.  

I was one of the field organizers on the No on 48 campaign as I am again on the No on 62 campaign. I told crowds two years ago that delivering a significant defeat would show that Colorado voters do not want this extreme amendment pushed on them again. But, like the many rounds of TABOR, the proponents know that pushing their extreme national agenda can be accomplished by pushing amendments every two years in Colorado. I joined the No on 62 campaign, because after dealing them such a significant defeat two years ago, I was not going to sit idly by while they try to undo all the hard work the campaign put into it and all the voices of Colorado voters who said “NO!”

The greatest problem faced today is apathy. People assume that since it was defeated by such a large margin last time that there is no way that it can pass this time. Along the same lines they see this race as not having an impact on the election overall. Well, the people are wrong. This amendment drives people to the polls. In my experience, when they hear about it they remember Amendment 48 and are angered that the proponents have brought it back. Our polling has shown that this issue alone drives people to the polls. While I have nothing to substantiate my opinion, I also believe that the disgusting video and facebook page created by the proponents also serve as a great motivator for voters on this issue.

If you are reading this blog you are probably a political junkie like me. Which means you know what voter turnout looks like thus far, and you also know how voter turnout usually goes in an off year election. There are precious few days until election day, and turnout is paramount to this being a successful year. Yes, we need your help in turning out those voters. Whether it is helping out with a honk and wave or calling some of those voters who have been sitting on their ballot our goal is to resend the same message we sent two years ago: This amendment is far too extreme for Colorado and the voters will not put up with this.
