McInnis Visits Moffat County "Way Too Late"

An interesting story from the Craig Daily Press’ Brian Smith:

Moffat County Republican Central Committee Chairman John Ponikvar said he is glad Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott McInnis had decided to visit the Craig area as he campaigns before the primary.

However, Ponikvar said McInnis’ visit is “long overdue.”

“It’s way too late,” he said. “He should have been here a month ago, and I have been on his case and I have been on his campaign’s case since February.”

…Ponkivar said McInnis has “ignored much of rural Colorado” since announcing he would run for governor.

“This was his base when he was our Congressman,” he said. “I told him, ‘The house is only as good as its foundation and you let it erode and your house is tumbling,’ and I don’t see Scott McInnis winning Moffat County. He might, but he has just ignored us.”

You would think that a place like beet-red rural Moffat County would be a no-brainer for Scott McInnis to spend time in–and maybe it is now that he can’t walk down the street in major media markets without getting pummeled with questions about the political nightmare that engulfed him three weeks ago. Once you read the account of other local Republicans, it’s obvious that there’s just nothing for them to realistically hope for–they seem to have no delusions about Dan Maes, and Tom Tancredo wasn’t even mentioned in this article.

Bottom line: once they’ve written you off in your most politically loyal and most geographically insular strongholds, there’s really nowhere to go from there. Except, of course, to obscurity.
