Last Thursday, Sen. Cory Gardner showed up in Wheat Ridge for a rare public appearance. Gardner’s staff did their very best to under-publicize the event, but word spread to local activists and by the time Gardner showed up dozens of you were waiting to hold Gardner accountable with hard questions. Thanks to everyone who turned out!
After the tragic mass shootings a week ago, many of us hoped that Sen. Gardner might change his hard line against even the most common sense gun safety reforms–like the laws that have been on the books in Colorado for years, or a red flag law like the one even Donald Trump has endorsed. But it didn’t happen. Gardner’s response to this latest terrible round of violence was five words: “I don’t support gun control.”
As I wrote in my Denver Post column Sunday, “Politicians like Sen. Cory Gardner, the fourth-highest recipient of NRA money out of the entire U.S. Senate, make a career of stopping broadly popular, reasonable gun-safety measures like universal background checks, limits on high capacity magazines, and extreme risk protection order legislation that even Donald Trump has now voiced support for. Not a single Republican supported these bills in the Colorado legislature, and several Democratic lawmakers, including Gov. Jared Polis, are ostensibly the targets of recall attempts because of their passage.” Read more here.
Confronted with the devastating effects of mass gun violence and with real solutions available to solve the problem if we only had the political courage, the refusal of politicians like Cory Gardner to take this issue seriously is deeply frustrating. In the end, if the politicians refuse to act only accountability at the polls can change this nation’s course. If Gardner won’t act, our vote in 2020 becomes literally a matter of life and death.
Thanks for everything you’ve done to hold Cory Gardner accountable all these years. It’s been a long struggle, but change is coming. Here are more great ways to fight back for the week of August 12:
Town Hall: Public Health Impacts of Climate Change & Environment
Congressman Jason Crow has partnered with the Colorado School of Public Health to bring together a panel of experts to answer constituent questions about the ways that the climate crisis impacts human health and our community. Attendees are invited to join additional event organizers for a cup of coffee before the forum at Lost Coffee (#30, 2100 North Ursula Street, Aurora) at 8:30AM. Free coffee and pastries will be provided as well as organizational t-shirts, pins and posters. Attendance at both the Coffee Hour and the forum is free, but seating space may be limited.

Show up for clean air, climate and clean cars in Colorado!
You’ve rallied, you’ve sent in comments, you’ve hiked – you’ve done almost everything it takes to show you care about clean air and zero emission vehicles in Colorado. The NARAL Leadership Council was created to bring together leaders in the community and to help amplify NARAL’s mission and importance of our work across the state. This year we are so excited to be joined by Rupali Sharma, Senior Counsel at The Lawyering Project, for a discussion on the fate of Roe v. Wade and its impact on state access to abortion care. Rupali has previously worked at the Center for Reproductive Rights and was an attorney on the Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt Supreme Court case.

How did racism emerge as a such a pervasive social structure in the U.S.? What is the reality of “race”? Why do so many people still have erroneous beliefs about race’s influence on our destinies? It’s a question many of us have asked at one time or another, and it has a clear answer. Race is a social construct, a tool for oppression. In short, racism is real, but race is not. Race also has a definitive origin story, and one that every anti-racist or social justice activist should know. Join this training to learn a brief history of racial classification in the U.S., and how it influences our mistaken perception of race today, and its implications for anti-racist work in the future.

We here at Sanctuary For All will be hosting our first of many fundraising events for affected families of deportation! Metro Denver Sanctuary Coalition, Women In Sanctuary, and FUSD will also be in attendance/co-hosting. Craft Fair wil start at 11 a.m. where we will have Art, Shirts, Stickers, Buttons, etc. for sale. Stay Strong with Our Senators – Saturday Postcard Events in SoBo
An extremist group is trying to recall Colorado State Senators Brittany Pettersen and Pete Lee. They are collecting signatures for the recall petitions right now in Lakewood and Colorado Springs. Please join us in SoBo to write postcards and inform the voters on what’s going on and urge them to decline to sign the petitions. It’s the most cost effective way to stop the recalls in the bud and save tax payers tens of thousands of dollars down the road in recall elections.
