While deliberations continue on who should be nominated to serve as Colorado’s next U.S. Attorney, another name has been suggested to us as a possible ‘consensus candidate’–Boulder County DA Stan Garnett’s name has made rounds in the last few days as a qualified and uncontroversial choice, citing a long record in private practice, local roots, and a so-far good experience in office. Plus, he just managed to get a term limits extension for his office passed by nine fingernail-biting votes–so you know his arteries are in good shape.
On the other hand, he just managed to get a term limits extension for his office, which you would think means he has no interest in leaving anytime soon.
Most observers thought that after the withdrawal of the previous candidate that a new one would be selected quickly, with much of the discussion focusing on former prosecutor John Walsh and Pueblo DA Bill Thiebaut. The fact that one of the alternates from the pool of three announced last January hasn’t been quickly nominated raises the possibility that other candidates are being considered.
