      1. Why on earth would a guy in such a non-political business want to sabotage his brand by setting himself against this? Decriminalization/ legalization has become a movement and he's going to lose bigger than he can imagine. What a dummy!

    1. The plague of Big Pharma haunts efforts to end Prohibition and our spectacularly failed War on Drugs People (h/t to V).  Here a great piece on their behind -the-scenes work to keep Prohibition in check.  Followed by a very informative 19 minutes by John Oliver on our nation's opiod crisis.

For big pharma, however, an expanding amount of data explains their fears. Opiate overdoses dropped by roughly 25% in states that have legalized medical marijuana compared to states that have prohibited sales of the plant, according to a 2014 study from the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study implies that people could be using medical marijuana to treat their pain rather than opioid painkillers, or they’re taking lower doses. And research published this year by the University of Georgia shows that Medicare prescriptions for drugs used to treat chronic pain and anxiety dropped in states that have legalized medical marijuana. Medicare saved roughly $165m in 2013, according to the study, which estimated that expenditures for Medicare Part D, the portion of the government-funded health insurance program that subsidizes prescription drug costs, would drop by $470m annually if medical marijuana were legalized nationally.

  1. San Miguel County ballots were received yesterday. My wife and I voted today. Hope we help turn CD3. Scott Tipton doesn't represent us. He doesn't listen to constituents to his left. He has never been to our county seat even once. He's avoided our (liberal) county commissioners completely. And his office doesn't bother replying to constituent mail. Some ideologues are principled and smart, some are just lazy; Tipton comes across as the latter. C'mon Gail, win one for the future of the western slope!

  2. ColPols, I think you missed a good quote:

“Literally, people will seriously say, ‘Can't you delete his Twitter app?’” Conway told CNN’s Dana Bash in an interview broadcast Monday night. “It's not for me to take away a grown man's Twitter account.”

    http://www.coloradoindependent.com/161654/mike-coffman-donald-trump-tv-ad

A lawyer for the re-election campaign of GOP Congressman Mike Coffman has sent a cease-and-desist letter to a local TV station that’s airing an ad saying Coffman “stands with Donald Trump and will support Trump for President.” […]

Coffman campaign attorney Jonathan Anderson of the law firm Holland & Hart says the statement in the ad is false, calling it an “illegal advertisement” that runs afoul of Colorado law.

    But wait, it gets better:

It should be noted that campaign ads by the Coffman campaign and its supporters have failed multiple fact checks from news outlets throughout the race. […] Asked to address those ads, Anderson did not immediately respond.

  3. The Quadrennial Conundrum: Can a Catholic vote for a Democrat?  I'll be really glad when this election is behind us if for no other reason than for the drone of 'the end is near if Hillary is elected' from our local priest can end.  Perhaps a better question to my overly-conservative parish might be whether being on your knees, asking for protection and guidance during the '08, '12 and (now) '16 elections, which have/are going to deliver a President from the Democratic party with a majority of votes, isn't the answer to your prayers?

    I'm anxiously anticipating the Nov. 13 Homily…

This assessment of a candidate’s political platform works in both positive and negative ways: Catholics may come to the decision that one candidate is more in line with their moral beliefs regarding social teachings, while another, despite his or her position on abortion, may stand for other things Catholics consider to be morally unjust and unacceptable. A candidate’s position on the use of torture and war are valid moral considerations for a Catholic voter. As are any positions, actions, or statements that are immoral, reckless, racist, or incompetent.

A Catholic is not obligated to ignore the vast majority of a candidate’s political platform and public behavior and vote solely based on whether he or she wants to criminalize abortion—especially if there’s good reason to believe that said candidate doesn’t have the ability (or the intention) to do anything of the sort.

    1. Several comments here Michael. I am strongly opposed to having big government; powered up by big religion; attempting to interfere in the private and personal lives of citizens. The Supreme Court issued the Roe and PP v. Casey decisions, in reaction to the efforts of religious groups to control what people do in their bedrooms.

But let us not forget that these decisions aren't the only targets of radical Catholics. The ultimate target of the radical Catholics; like Americans United for Life and American Life League; is to overturn Griswold v. Connecticut. Overall, the bishops need to ponder the fact that the large majority of their flock ignores their directives on human reproduction.

I used to be a Catholic. No longer. Being a free thinker is far better than being brainwashed.

      1. I left the Catholic church 53 years ago.  And theism generally.  It isn't always easy but agnosticism is the only logical explanation to me of how the world works.   Otherwise, explain how an intelligent designer creates donald trump.

    2. The Wray parish is extremely conservative – there are but a handful of us that admit to being Democrats. I've always fallen on the social justice side of the fence. But not for Pope Francis giving the Progressives cover right now, I'd probably be a stranger on Sunday. It's been a long, dry spell. Long live the Jesuits.

      1. Yay Jesuits! I'm a proud Regis U alumni. They require a year of learning about Western and Eastern religious traditions – wish that were a more widespread requirement, as it was very eye-opening for this spiritual mutt. It helped me find a home in the Unitarian church, which embraces all faiths, or lack thereof.

I noticed that Pope Francis has finally made it onto the coveted veladoras saint candle market. My local vendors only carry Benedict, for whatever reason.
