Get More Smarter on Tuesday (September 20)

GetMoreSmarter-SnowNo, Brangelina, say it ain’t so! It’s time to Get More Smarter with Colorado Pols. If you think we missed something important, please include the link in the comments below (here’s a good example). If you are more of a visual learner, check out The Get More Smarter Show.

TOP OF MIND TODAY…

► Republican Senate candidate Darryl Glenn is losing the last of his marbles. As Peter Marcus writes for the Durango Herald, Glenn really has no idea what’s going on in Colorado:

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Darryl Glenn says national GOP interests have largely passed him over this election because he’s guaranteed a win.

His comments have Democrats literally laughing out loud.

The comment from Glenn came last week in an interview with The Durango Herald, when Glenn was asked about his lackluster fundraising and dismal polling. He is down by double digits against Democratic incumbent Michael Bennet in several polls.

“I look at it as a compliment,” Glenn said of the lack of national interest. “They know I can beat Michael Bennet on my own.”

A spokesman for Bennet’s campaign could hardly contain himself.

“Can you quote me laughing?” asked Bennet spokesman Andrew Zucker.

Glenn’s comments were reported by the Herald just a few days after he also told the newspaper,  “I am the human equivalent of a unicorn.”

► Las Vegas billionaire Sheldon Adelson is ignoring repeated requests from Donald Trump to write some big checks to the campaign:

Mr. Adelson had once dangled the possibility of giving as much as $100 million to pro-Trump “super PACs,” an infusion that with a stroke would have given Mr. Trump a financially competitive network of outside groups to back his presidential campaign.

But with less than two months remaining in the campaign, the mercurial casino magnate — who entertained but ultimately rebuffed pitches from an array of Republican candidates during the party’s nominating contest this election cycle — appears to be focusing instead on Republicans in the House and Senate.

► Democrat Morgan Carroll is out with a new television ad that takes a huge swing at Republican Rep. Mike Coffman over his wishy-washy attitude about Donald Trump.

IN CASE YOU ARE STANDING NEAR A WATER COOLER…

Don’t be this guy.

► These are not the sort of firearms that any responsible person should be promoting, Sen. Randy Baumgardner.

If Republican Donald Trump is elected President, he is primed to name a top oil and gas executive — and staunch animal rights opponent — as his Interior Secretary. Who is vetting these people? Donald Trump, Jr.?

► North Carolina Republican Sen. Richard Burr is in serious trouble as he mounts a half-assed re-election bid. From Politico:

The Senate Intelligence chairman risks getting caught flat-footed against a relatively unknown opponent in North Carolina, which has become a major target for Democrats eyeing the White House, Senate and the governor’s mansion in Raleigh.

But Burr comes by his laid-back attitude honestly — quirks and all. He doesn’t wear socks, except on certain Thursdays. He’ll bring his own lunch to caucus meetings to save a few bucks on the catered food and sometimes walks around the Capitol chowing on grits.

Wait…what? Burr only wears socks on Thursdays?

► Former President George H.W. Bush apparently plans to vote for Hillary Clinton for President rather than back fellow Republican Donald Trump.

► Donald Trump continues to rail against the media for having the audacity to practice journalism.

► Retired Congressman Tom Tancredo thinks he has the answer for navigating through dangerous times. From Denver7:

Former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo believes Americans are living in “dangerous times” and hopes a gun giveaway will make the world less threatening. That’s the line he’s telling readers in an email.

He also is attempting to fatten the pockets of his political action committee.

In an email sent to supporters, Tancredo and his Littleton-based Team America PAC said it is giving away a H&K P2000 .40 handgun valued at nearly $800…

…In a follow-up email to supporters Monday, Tancredo incorrectly states that eight people were killed in the recent Minnesota mall terror attack.

Tom Tancredo, ladies and gentlemen!

► Former Jefferson County School Board member Julie Williams, who was famously recalled by Jeffco voters last year, is a big fan of State Senator Laura Waters Woods. Unfortunately for Woods, Williams is not shy about making her preferences public.

► As the Washington Post reports, Donald Trump is one of the foremost beneficiaries of Donald Trump’s charitable organization:

Donald Trump spent more than a quarter-million dollars from his charitable foundation to settle lawsuits that involved the billionaire’s for-profit businesses, according to interviews and a review of legal documents.

Those cases, which together used $258,000 from Trump’s charity, were among four newly documented expenditures in which Trump may have violated laws against “self-dealing” — which prohibit nonprofit leaders from using charity money to benefit themselves or their businesses.

In one case, from 2007, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club faced $120,000 in unpaid fines from the town of Palm Beach, Fla., resulting from a dispute over the size of a flagpole.

In a settlement, Palm Beach agreed to waive those fines — if Trump’s club made a $100,000 donation to a specific charity for veterans. Instead, Trump sent a check from the Donald J. Trump Foundation, a charity funded almost entirely by other people’s money, according to tax records.

► Senator Michael Bennet (D-Denver) released yet another new television ad today. Bennet’s latest ad focuses on renewable energy.

► The Denver City Council approved the city’s first affordable housing fund in a vote on Monday.
