You Know It's An Election Year When the AR-15 Giveaways Begin

Free assault rifles! It must be an election year.
Free assault rifles! It must be an election year.

Like candy hearts on Valentine’s Day or Jack-o-lanterns on Halloween, for Tea Party Republicans, nothing says “Election Year” like an AR-15 assault rifle!

Here’s the details from a fundraising email sent out yesterday from the U.S. Senate campaign of Republican Tim Neville:

Because a strong turnout at the March 1st precinct caucuses are so important, to help get the word out about my campaign I’m holding a “March 1st Precinct Caucus AR-15 Giveaway.”

Of course, I know the anti-gun media may hate it.

And I know the political talking heads may sneer as they continue blaming guns and law-abiding gun owners for the acts of thugs and madmen.

But I am THE pro-gun, pro-Constitution candidate in this race for U.S. Senate — and I can’t think of a better way to get that word out before March 1st than by giving away a brand new AR-15.

Far be it for us to sneer at another assault rifle giveaway from a Republican candidate supported by the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (RMGO). Nevertheless, we can’t help but point out the obvious here: If you’re really that worried that the govmint is gonna take your guns, perhaps you should stop giving them away. Will you be ready when the watermelons come for you?

We’ve seen this tactic in Colorado before, most recently when the RMGO backed Greg Brophy for Governor in 2014.

  1. Is Neville going to host a "Take Back Colorado" rally at Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge and giveaway the AR-15 there?

He supports the Bundy Gang, right?

Birds of a feather and all.

  2. Victor Head, (in his ill-fated campaign to replace Bo Ortiz as Pueblo County Clerk),  Ted Nugent, and Tom Tancredo have also all given away CMMG or AR15 rifles. Because nothing says, "I'm a responsible political leader" like raffling off weapons which have the sole purpose of mowing down dozens of humans in short order.

  3. Aren't raffles/giveaways like these illegal unless strict rules are followed? Is Neville breaking the law?

I would like to win that AR-15 and then take it to a smelter to be turned into plowshares. Tim, how do I enter?

  4.  Section 597 of Title 18 of United States Code:

Whoever makes or offers to make an expenditure to any person, either to vote or withhold his vote, or to vote for or against any candidate; and whoever solicits, accepts, or receives any such expenditure in consideration of his vote or the withholding of his vote—shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

  5. Someone tried the same thing in Georgia, where under Georgia state law the attempt to give away a gun was criticized as potentially illegal: "If the contest to win a free gun were restricted to voters only, it would be illegal." But isn't that what Neville is doing here by restricting the winner to those who go to the March 1 Republican caucus? Or can a gun-loving Democrat also win the gun?

Where can any of us sign up for our equal rights to win the gun? Where is the "No Purchase Necessary" information? Neville's website doesn't mention the gun giveaway at all – isn't that illegal?

    1. Raffles, bingo, games of chance can't be part of any campaign fundraising. So slick candidates and campaigns use different words than raffles, bingo, games of chance, gambling. What do you think are the chances someone will ever call them on it? (Hint: slim to none)
