John Andrews: Beware of 'Bunny Day'

(Even by John Andrews standards… – promoted by Colorado Pols)

I’m confused. Is this an editorial or the transcript of a schizophrenic homeless person yelling at a parking meter?

So reads one of the comments under John Andrews’ latest work of fiction, which–in this case–was actually written as a work of fiction.

And, while I don’t think the former Senate president was actually trying to write in the voice of a crazy person lecturing parking meters, he does an admirable job of capturing the terrifying ‘reality’ that such persons (if I am to believe the literature) are tormented with.

Mr. Andrews piece is a dystopian fantasy of sorts–that all began in 2010…

My neck of America in early 2010 is replete with many churches–the entire diversity of faith is represented here: from Mormon to Catholic.

No minarets yet pushing up against the Bookcliffs, but for people of the Christian faith there seems to be a lot of choices and even some redundancy.

Congress, the Executive Branch, the Supreme Court, and the state legislature are populated primarily with Christians. That’s fine–demographically we remain a ‘Christian nation.’

In Mr. Andrew’s dark vision, however, such institutional, demographic, and political saturation are not sufficient to prevent Bunny Day’s imminent arrival.

That fate was sealed in our time:

The dominoes began falling with the election of three fiery atheists to the Colorado House in 2010.

Why exactly Mr. Andrews feel persecuted is between him and his therapist, or the parking meters.

But why the Denver Post thinks his exercise in make-believe is worth the cost of ink or column space eludes me.

Mr. Andrews’ silly fable simply creates more division–attempts to frighten people to fear the ‘other.’ The ‘fiery atheist,’ the ‘politically correct,’ the suspect in our midst.  And on this holiest of days of the Christian calendar, rather than charity Mr. Andrews again extends vitriol.

Clearly the revered ‘Founding Fathers’ intended that there be a faith test to hold public office, which is why they wrote:

no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

Requiring–either tacitly or normatively–that public officials embrace a certain faith is familiar practice in many of the nations we feel superior to.  Andrews stops short of actually parroting the words of the Taliban–preferring to suggest them instead.

But we know them by the fruit they bear.

  1. There are many Christians who really enjoy the thought of being persecuted. They read the stories in the Bible, the history of Roman persecution of the followers of Jesus, and they can’t help but feel like they should be experiencing it as well.

Andrews wishes he was getting tossed to the lions, which is why he wrote this.

Meanwhile, in reality, though the recent ARIS survey found fewer people self-identifying as Christian, more than 3/4 did.

Even if fewer than 50% did, the scenario described by Andrews is beyond fantasy. People will always be free to practice any religion they wish–that’s one of the things that will continue to make this country the greatest one on Earth.

  2. and I realize I say that all the time, but the bar really does keep going lower all the time. It’s like Idiot Republican Limbo.

Who are the three militant atheist legislators he’s trying to warn about? That seemed a bit specific for this wankfest of speculation and paranoia.

  3. (and I say “little” with the utmost sincerity).  The extreme has been pushed so close to the edge of their flat earth that poor old John had to go right on over in order to have something weirdly new to say–and is now hanging by his fingernails!

      1. The image is entertaining anyway!  So what we’re hearing from him now are his screams on the way down, becoming more feeble and far away.

  4. I posted yesterday morning on Denverpost.com:

John, freedom of speech comes with a responsibility. As other posters have said, your fear-mongoring, your drive toward theocracy, your contempt for America’s constitutional commitment to freedom of religion couched in the utterly unsupported fear that yours will be denied as a result, are all just mind-bogglingly counterproductive (I opted for a polite term). That you were ever elected to any state legislature, and that any major metropolitan newspaper would privilege your drivel with column space, is cause for all Americans, and all Coloradans, to hang their heads in shame.

What we most need is to strive to be reasonable people of good will working together to confront the problems and grasp the opportunities of a complex and subtle world. What we don’t need is more irrational people of ill-will working to divide us under the false belief that it is a black-and-white world (as defined by their particular religious beliefs, which they feel must be imposed on everyone) whose problems are a result of others not being as simple-minded and intolerant as they are.

Please, take up crochet, and defer to people who have a clue. There is no greater gift you could possibly give to the people of Colorado.

        1. So Andrew’s column won’t even serve a useful purpose, such as lining the bottom of a birdcage.

However, it will forever linger in the ether, fouling the minds of youth unfortunate enough to stumble upon it.  Fortunately, your comment as well as all of the rest should serve as a counterweight and fair warning to the unwary reader.

One can only hope the editors of the Post realize that Andrews’ time for retirement has arrived.  Easing him out of the print edition will probably be the first clue Andrews might actually recognize.

          1. by the fact that, last time I checked, only one of the several comments failed to identify Andrews as the complete raving nut-case that he is. And that one statement of agreement was tepid enough.

  5. John Andrews does see odd connections, doesn’t he?

If he could dish on the fiery atheists running in 2010, I’d happily support them, however.

    1. is that he and those with similar theocratic tendencies are almost identical to those despised Islamic fundamentalists, and in diametrical opposition to the Enlightenment philosophy which informed our Founding Fathers.

Religion can thrive in a constitutional democracy, and constitutional democracy can thrive with religion. But politically agressive fundamentalism, otherwise known as advocacy of theocracy, is the antithesis of constitutional democracy; one or the other has to go. I know which one gets my vote.
