Frazier Announces for Congress; Some People Even Care

by: Colorado Pols

Fri Oct 16, 2009 at 11:34:42 AM MDT

Apparently Ryan Frazier's announcement yesterday that he will run for Congress in CD-7 instead of U.S. Senate didn't go all that well. We've heard estimates of only about 30 people, half of whom were staff or volunteers.

But don't take our word for it. Here's a video of Frazier's announcement speech yesterday, and you can judge for yourself based on the crowd reaction (or embarrassing lack thereof) to Frazier's uncanny vocal impression of Barack Obama.

We've said before that Frazier is not prepared for a big race like Senate or Congress, and our analysis holds. Weak turnout yesterday, combined with some genius's idea to hold the kickoff in front of a loud and busy road, doesn't exactly inspire confidence if you're a Republican (cue sound of three people clapping).

Are they 30 feet from the road?
Watching a bunch of dump trucks go by is a little distracting.

But Ryan's emulation of Obama is pretty...hilarious.

This is a staff fuck up
If I would blame Frazier for anything it would be his not making sure they know what the hell they are doing.  He made the best of it though considering the circumstances, which is why I would be inclined to give him a break.

Staff fuck up or green screen magic?
No one would seriously make an announcement for the cameras with dump trucks and semis roaring right behind his family, would he? This has got to be a parody of a congressional announcement. Well done, green screeners. Well done.

I couldn't stop laughing
I don't know who the candidate is or what he is running for, but I conjure an image of the guy booing looking like Will Farrell's small roll in wedding crashers.

[ Parent ]
That's a classic
but the candidate didn't decide in advance to have a heckler -- Frazier had to be blind not to realize he'd look like the featured speaker at a monster truck rally.

Here's a novel thought--
LEAVE THE AREA and hold the conference a 100 yards away, dude. Poor guy. Nobody deserves that.

[ Parent ]
And how sad that the press had to suggest it.
Shows how rattled the poor guy probably was.

That's so funny.
Holy cow.

"Boo Ben Konop liar booo!"

It reminded me of this:

[ Parent ]
In defense of the heckler
They did hold the presser right in front of his house against his wishes and trampled his garden.

[ Parent ]
Does he have staff?
And I'm not being snarky here.

Does he or is it volunteers (which would be my guess and if it is the case, I probably should cut him some slack here.)

"I wouldn't characterize caloric intake as "professional development." c rork

[ Parent ]
Oh my Lord.
I can't hear half of what he's saying without straining because of the fucking traffic. Who's bright idea was it to hold his announcement there?

I stopped halfway through
I kept feeling this sensation that some vehicle was about to plow through the cameraman.

Frazier's scheduler should be fired.
Why was the announcement set for the same day as little Falcon Heene took his balloon ride? It was just poor planning.

The balloon was supposed to fly through the background
but they miscalculated. It would have been AWESOME.

Great Location
A locally owned Colorado small business??

Perfect setting! - this is more about street-cred than production design, and the speech showed that Ryan is cultivating relationships that go way beyond 527 postcards - well done for his team

Secondly, Ryan's announcement is getting a ton of coverage and lots of attention in Wash DC

Yeah.... jokes are always fun, but underestimate this campaign to Perlmutter's peril...

[ Parent ]
Faint praise, MAH
You would applaud a candidate holding a kickoff event inside a slaughterhouse if it was a Republican.

Maybe Frazier will prove to be a strong opponent for Perlmutter. But his kickoff was crap.

BTW, weren't you also saying "don't underestimate Ryan Frazier" when he was running for Senate? Since he's no longer a candidate for Senate, we "estimated" him just fine.

[ Parent ]
A slaughterhouse?
Pun intended with that one? Maybe if Frazier had gone for this seat originally he would have been able to raise more money but at this point maybe raising his name i.d. and profile across CD7 will give him more than being a nothing in the senate race.

I think it's time the other 60% stand up and start wielding their power within both parties.  I'm convinced we have more in common and more common sense than the 20% of the loons on the left and whackos on the right who run the show now.

[ Parent ]
Ali, serious here for a second.
Did you listen to the video? I can barely hear Frazier speaking. I'm utterly distracted by the traffic and the sound is deafening. This is not a perfect setting by anyone's stretch of the imagination and while I appreciate you trying to put a positive spin on this, this was just plain awful. Bad location, bad turnout and uninspiring announcement.

This is one bet I will make you and win--Perlmutter wins re-election easily next year. You game? And this one's for steaks. :)

I'll stick with the public option.  I like winning.

BTW, why didn't Andrew primary DeGette?  He would have kicked her ass.  Then he could run for Senate against Norton in 2016.

Please, Dems.  Lose DeGette.

We think the same about little Dougy
RE: DeGette, I think the FRAC Act is a great step.  I am glad that Colorado has a wilderness champion.  I haven't agreed with all her positions, but I like a lot of what she has done and tried to do.  Lamborn on the other hand is a disgrace.  What has Little Dougy done for Colorado?  And isn't there another GOP congressman in Colorado?  Wouldn't know it from reading about anything he has done...

DeGette
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D...

DeGette received national attention in 2005, when the House of Representatives passed her legislation to lift President George W. Bush's limits on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.
I support that, and I think it's good for both Colorado and the nation.

In 2007, DeGette served as the House Democrats' designated whip on the bill reauthorizing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (HR 3162). Although President Bush announced his opposition to the legislation, the House passed the bill on August 1, 2007 by a vote of 225 to 204. The Senate adopted a different version of the legislation the next day.
I support that, and I think it's good for both Colorado and the nation.

DeGette was also instrumental in the passage of the Udall Amendment to the House Energy Bill, which the House approved by a vote of 220 to 190 on August 4, 2007. The Amendment creates a national Renewable Energy Standard that requires electric suppliers to produce 15 percent of their energy from renewable sources, 4 percent of which can come from efficiency, by the year 2020. DeGette was a leading cosponsor of, and lead whip for, the Amendment.

Sorry, but . . .
"Ryan's announcement is getting a ton of coverage and lots of attention in Wash DC."

Two secretaries and an intern making jokes about the launch in the break room of the National Republican Congressional Committee does not constitute ""a ton of coverage and lots of attention."

;)

[ Parent ]
getting a ton of coverage and lots of attention in Wash DC.
Snark aside, MAH is simply wrong about this. Frazier's stepping down from one campaign to another more his size is hardly getting any notice, and the notice it's getting is tepid.

Politico devotes all of four paragraphs to it concluding:

A military veteran, Frazier lobbied for a right-to-work referendum that appeared on the ballot in Colorado last year. He's a social moderate and favored a 2006 referendum that would have granted domestic partnership rights to same-sex couples.

Frazier, whose Senate campaign never took off, ranks as a recruiting success for the National Republican Congressional Committee, which didn't have any serious candidates running against the second-term Democrat.

http://www.politico.com/news/s...

CQ devotes a bit more space to the announcement, though the reporter doesn't exactly grasp how little of Aurora falls in the 7th CD.

Frazier has a much better chance of securing the Republican nomination in the 7th District, though he would face a sturdy opponent in Perlmutter, who won a second term in 2008 with 63 percent of the vote in a district that voted more strongly for Barack Obama (59 percent) than did the state at large (54 percent).

http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmsp...

The Washington Independent notes Frazier's gambit in two paragraphs.

http://washingtonindependent.c...

There's also a routine AP story and a BizJournals piece that covers the bases, but that's basically it.

Ford dealership was an inspired choice -- if it was inside!
I think the background of a Ford dealership, which did not take the bailout, was an inspired choice for Frazier's message.  But the noise, and even the visual distraction of the traffic reflections overshadowing the candidate, robbed his message -- even if TV was just doing a voiceover.  They should have moved it inside, the showroom or the service area -- I think some hard working Americans overhauling my F-250 would have been a great backdrop.  Good idea, poor execution.  But give Frazier credit -- at least he's one Republican who doesn't force me to apologize to my gay friends for being in the GOP.

Dan Haley parrots Wadhams talking points on Frazier
on Colorado Inside Out, airing now on KBDI. Paraphrasing: Why's this switch a good fit for Frazier? Because Aurora is a huge part of the 7th District and many residents there have voted for Frazier twice already.

Wrong on both counts:
