Get More Smarter on Wednesday (June 22)

  • by: Colorado Pols

MoreSmarterLogo-SunscreenGood news: it’s still hot outside, but for today, at least, we should be able to stay below 100°F. It’s time to Get More Smarter with Colorado Pols! If you think we missed something important, please include the link in the comments below (here’s a good example). If you are more of a visual learner, check out The Get More Smarter Show.

TOP OF MIND TODAY…

► One week from today, the Colorado Primary Election will be complete. If you haven’t yet received a mail ballot, you should check your registration or address status ASAP. Go to JustVoteColorado.org for more information.

If you haven’t yet voted, you might want to get moving — turnout numbers are still pretty weak thus far.

► Florida Sen. Marco Rubio has reversed course and will seek re-election for the U.S. Senate after months of “unequivocal” statements that he would be a “private citizen” in November. Rubio is not a big fan of the Senate — he barely bothers to show up to vote — but since his Presidential aspirations didn’t work out this year, he doesn’t have anything else to do until his next bid for the White House in 2020. National Republicans aren’t opposed to the idea, since an incumbent Rubio gives them a better chance to keep that Senate seat in Florida.

► The Aurora School Board member and State House candidate whose resume appears to be almost entirely fictional remains defiant despite calls from the Aurora School Board asking him to resignEric Nelson is doubling tripling quadrupling down on the validity of his personal biography — which has largely been disproved by the Colorado Statesman and Denver7.

Get even more smarter after the jump…

IN CASE YOU ARE STANDING NEAR A WATER COOLER…

► Donald Trump may be the presumptive Presidential nominee for the Republican Party, but he still hasn’t figured out how to put together an actual, you know, campaign.

► The Sierra Club has endorsed Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Denver) for re-election. This probably wasn’t a particularly tough call to make, given that most of the Republican Senate candidates have questioned the existence of Climate Change in general.

► “It doesn’t appear that I’m going to be the nominee.” So said Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday, acknowledging what has been obvious to everyone else for several weeks now: Hillary Clinton is going to be the Democratic nominee for President.

► Candidates for federal office in Colorado just completed their final pre-Primary fundraising period, and the money isn’t exactly flowing freely for the five Republicans running for U.S. Senate.

► 9News does a “Truth Test” of a television ad that criticizes Donald Trump for mocking disabled people. The truth hurts.

► Hardly a week goes by anymore without a series of racist screeds appearing on social media courtesy of county officers for the Republican Party.

► Ben Higgins, star of the TV reality dating show The Bachelor, appears to be moving closer toward running for a State House seat in Denver (HD-4). Higgins will apparently appear in a new reality show that may also document his campaign efforts to unseat Democratic Rep. Dan Pabon in one of the most heavily-Democratic districts in the state.

► Political pundits and reporters continue to examine how much of a role Colorado might play as a “battleground state” in 2016. Up now: The Durango Herald.

► The Colorado Independent looks at how Colorado Senators Michael Bennet (D-Denver) and Cory Gardner (R-Yuma) voted on a series of gun safety bills this week:

Democrat Michael Bennet and Republican Cory Gardner found themselves on the same side on only one of the four gun-related amendments brought to a vote, according to tallies of votes cast.

They both voted No on an amendment by Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley that would increase funding for background checks but not make those checks mandatory.

Meanwhile, House Democrats are engaging in a “sit-in” protest designed to draw attention to House Republicans’ refusal to vote on any gun safety-related measures.

OTHER LINKS YOU SHOULD CLICK

► Supporters and opponents of measures dealing with “end of life” options in Colorado are rushing to collect enough signatures for placement on the November ballot.

► The Colorado Supreme Court will hear a case dealing with the role of an “ethics commission” in Colorado.

ICYMI

► The next episode of the Get More Smarter Show is on the way. Now is a good time to watch any past episodes you may have missed of The Get More Smarter Show!

  1. Mark Halperin today promoted Michael Bennet as "the smart VP choice for Hillary Clinton."   He noted Bennet's policy abilities, his youth, from the West, and is qualified to be president.

I would add that Michael Bennet is a favorite of Barack Obama (my hunch).  That would help Obama supporters who haven't been that excited about Hillary to come on board with more enthusiasm.

Maybe we need a definitive opinion whether Michael Bennet can run for CO US Senate and Vice President, simultaneously.

      1. Undecided, although Colorado law does say that "no person is eligible to be a candidate for more than one office at one time." The state's Elections Division has apparently issued a statement in the past questioning whether it applied to candidates for Federal offices.

  2. Halperins' star has fallen pretty far with me, lately.. I used to think he was pretty astute, but not so much any more. This doesn't boost my confidence in his judgement.

      1. Important, I think – one of the things Hillary needs is a running mate that excites and motivates, not another policy wonk. Which running mate will get voters excited about voting for the ticket, and who will help her dilute her high negatives? The person also needs some serious depth of knowledge and experience, which some of the flash-in-the-pan shiny-object types do not have. Bennet's probably not the right person, and a whole lot of others are probably not the right person.

  3. Marco Rubio: Orlando made me rethink my pledge not to run for re-election to the Senate.

Oh, great: one of Florida's most LGBT hostile politicians felt compelled by violence against the LGBT community to run for office.

  4. FWIW, the other day I wondered why I had a write-in slot on my primary ballot. After all, I figured – if you've petitioned on successfully, then you've made the deadline for the ballot, right?

Apparently you can petition on after the deadline, and that earns you the right to be nigh-on invisible for a party primary. Elections officials can't tell voters who is available to be written in, and you have to get the name at least mostly right in order for it to count.

I still don't know who Jared Polis' vastly unprepared opponent is.

  5. Harry Hempy is his real name, and he's a Green curmudgeon. He is cannabis-friendly, but not as hempalicious as some folk ….(cough-MB-cough)

I actually think that Hempy should have gone big or gone home – that is, if he's going to primary Jared Polis, he should have had a real critique of the tactic of initially advocating for ballot initiatives, then suddenly caving and promoting the Frackapalooza deal, which ultimately culminated in the Governor's task force recommending minor rules changes, , which aren't enforced anyway, and a few more inspectors, that really didn't get us very far in empowering communities impacted by fracking.

So that could have been a legit critique of Polis' "work within the system for incremental change" strategy. Instead, Hempy barely mentions fracking, or the years-long struggle to give surface rights owners equal power with mineral rights holders. Instead, it's all about personality –  "Who is Harry Hempy?" Meh. PR doesn't need to bother to write him in.

    1. I filled my ballot out last week. Despite a few misgivings about Rep. Polis, I wasn't about to figure out how to write-in someone who couldn't mount enough of a campaign to get his name on to the ballot for real. No sense in giving away a seat to Republicans on a whim.

      1. Chuck Norris is actually a reasonably serious guy, we talked at the convention.  Can't say about Harry Hempy.   But if you expect me to vote for you without laughing, Harry…oh, forget about it.

    2.

that really didn't get us very far in empowering communities impacted by fracking.

Indeed, mama…"nowhere" is, in fact, not very far…

The Governors' "Blue Ribbon Panel" accomplished the goal set out for it…nothing. Just a stalling tactic.

Congressman Polis' betrayal on the initiative process evokes a memory that leaves the same taste in ones' mouth as the betrayal of the Initiative for Surface Owners Rights (ISOR) several years ago by the Colorado Association of Home Builders (CAHB).

After working with homebuilders and impacted citizens on the western slope and promising support for our initiative, the CAHB and the front range developers cut a deal with Governor Bill Owens and pulled their support abruptly, crushing the hopes of the many residents of the gas patch who felt that we finally had a chance to win. Congressman Polis' behavior here is no less cowardly and hurtful.

      1. I have never understood why anyone, based on past performance, votes and words from the guys own mouth, ever expected Polis to be a progressive champion and is unpleasantly surprised whenever he proves himself to be exactly what he is, Colorado's right most Democratic congress member.  Granted that's still considerably to the left of any of our Republican congress members but it is what it is.

Is he assumed to be much more liberal than his record demonstrates just because he's openly gay?  I can't think of any other reason.

For those who assume all gay men have great fashion sense and spend all their spare time at the gym sculpting perfect bodies he must be even more of a shocking disappointment.crying
