Incumbent Republican Rep. Marilyn Musgrave reported raising $290,638 in Q3, leaving her with a cash on hand total of $602,463. Musgrave continues to raise significant money in her bid for re-election, putting heavy pressure on Democrat Betsy Markey to keep up.

  1. There is so much disdain for Marilyn.  All Betsy needs is enough money to run an effective campaign to beat Marilyn.  And she will.  Of course Marilyn will outraise Betsy; she’s the incumbent.  But by initial appearances, the committee money won’t be there for Marilyn if the early fundraising is any indication by the GOP.  The GOP can’t seem to raise any money in Washington because no one thinks they can win, and if Betsy looks like she’ll do it, the DCCC and EMILY’s List will come in with guns blazing, and blast Betsy in to office.  I know the DCCC didn’t do a ton for Angie, but that’s a whole different candidate in a different cycle with a different chairman.

    1. (Be fine, that is.) Yes, 2008 bodes to be a terrible year for Republicans, but Musgrave has done a pretty good job repositioning herself (at least in the headlines) as a “moderate.”

It’s a joke, of course, but the gullible public just might be taken in.

Any Democratic candidate faces an uphill battle in this District.

    2. the DCCC and EMILY’s List will come in with guns blazing, and blast Betsy in to office.

Keep dreaming that little dream. Anyone who spins fundraising shortfalls by saying the DCCC will make up the difference is selling fool’s gold.

Betsy needs to buy time to perform well in Q4 by talking about how her two primary candidates withdrew late in the Q3, and that it won’t be until the Q4 numbers come in that a genuine assessment of this raise can be made.

But claiming the DC crowd will save Betsy in a pinch won’t work on CD-4 Democrats, and it won’t do Betsy any favors. We’ve seen three consecutive cycles where the DCCC threw the Democratic candidate under the bus. Get ready for the fourth.

      1. the DC crowd wont even get involved in this race.  I’m willing to bet if she had good fundraising numbers she would have released them by now.  Two bad quarters in a row and she could get another primary battle.
