Let’s be clear, Debbie. You left the Republican Party. After helping you and our other GOP candidates in Arapahoe County win, I never told you how to vote or expected you to be lock-step with Lambert or Lundberg. I did expect you to be faithful to our party organization that helped get you elected, the organization that raised money for you and even bailed you out in 2004 when your campaign was in debt! Many of us were here to support you, yet you chose to listen to the folks who didn’t. You showed them…and us.
And to add insult to injury, you worked with the House Democrats ahead of time to organize a press conference announcing your switch, only to pour salt in our wounds and share your new Democrat talking points. I hope you had the common courtesy to give a heads up to, at least, the state GOP and Arapahoe County GOP telling them of your betrayal.
So, no, Debbie, you left the Republican Party and weakened it a little more. We’re still here though. We’re pushing back against the “purists” and the un-electables and reforming from within. We haven’t quit…unlike you.

conflating “desperate” with “disparate ?”

GrandOlArapahoe, you should have worked a bit harder at pushing back against the “purists” if you want to keep moderates like Rep. Stafford in your party.
Either that, or join her by exiting their party and join one that values diversity of opinion and loathes litmus tests.
While I am happy to say a “democrat” now represents me, as her opponent in the 2006 election I have a few questions for Debbie.
Would she still consider herself a supporter of George Bush, or of the War in Iraq?
Has she reconsidered her views on wire-tapping US citizens, providing basic healthcare to the children of illegal immigrants, or same sex marriage.
While I like her strong views on cleaning up the healthcare system in general I cannot deny that I am skeptical of this change.
Just as when Ben Campbell changed parties in the middle of a term, I feel all the donations and time spent by those of the abandoned party should count for something.
I look forward to discussing her views on these and many other issues at upcoming democratic meetings.
Welcome to the party and please remember, it is not the label after the name that defines a representative, but the votes you cast on behalf of those that elected you (or didn’t in this case).
I see her point but I see and understand yours too. And as a Dem I very much appreciate you continuing to fight for the future not just of your party, but even more important this state continuing to have a 2 party system which is essential to being a democracy.
thanks – dave
Did you feel this strongly when Campbell switched from dem to pubs? IOW, did you consider him a traitor that joined you?
Me? I consider the fact that he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar to indicate that he was a good Pub?
As to Stafford, she used to be my rep. I was not wild about it, but hey, I was unincorporated Arapahoe. But after talking to her on several occasions, I found that she was at least considerate and a bit of a thinker. I did not always agree with her views, but I could understand hers. I wish that she would have had the courage to work on a 3rd party, but her reasoning made sense to me. As to your letter, no, I do not think that she owed you. After all, it was not the party that elected her. It was voters that did so. This is NOT USSR in spite of what you and your party is trying to push.
If you’re not in lock-step, you’re not wanted. Period.
