Colorado GOP Loves Mitt, Sort Of

  • by: Colorado Pols

From yesterday’s Denver Post:

The list of power brokers organizing Mitt Romney’s Colorado fundraiser today reads like a roster of the state’s GOP establishment.

Still, even supporters of the former Massachusetts governor say Romney must raise his profile here to overcome the celebrity of Fred Thompson and Rudolph Giuliani and win the nod among Colorado’s Republican ranks.

Former Gov. Bill Owens and Denver oilman and GOP rainmaker Bruce Benson have lent their names as hosts for today’s reception – Romney’s fourth stop in Colorado since announcing his presidential bid…

…Local backers of the former New York City mayor include former Denver Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe, former GOP gubernatorial candidate Marc Holtzman and state House Minority Leader Mike May, R-Parker.

May says he’s backing Giuliani as a strategy to win back the majority in Colorado’s House.

“From the top of the ticket, I think he could help us the best. If the top of the ticket isn’t doing well, as we saw with (former U.S. representative and 2006 gubernatorial candidate) Bob Beauprez last time, we can really get smoked,” May said.

Even Benson, Romney’s most prolific Colorado fundraiser, admits his candidate needs to boost his name recognition to beat Giuliani.

“My guess if you ran a poll today, Giuliani would win,” Benson said.[Pols emphasis]

Wow. Somebody better get Benson some new talking points for his boy Mitt.

  1. Romney is not candid by any means.

Here’s an analysis of Mitt’s own money being burned through faster than Steve Forbes, and he still can’t keep up with the Democratic frontrunners while having trouble shaking the republicans second (and third) tier candidates http://www.rollingst

  2. He sure has a lot of Colorado’s heavy hitters behind him for not being a real candidate.  To claim that Mitt has the same name ID as Guiliani would be unfounded.  However, when potential voters are “introduced” to Romney, they have shown that they consider him to be more likable, more qualified, and more trustworthy.  So, it would be better to look at polls in states where Romney has concentrated his efforts thus far.

The only reason I’ve heard for supporting Guiliani so far is some misguided notion that he’s going to keep the executive branch red by appealing to “moderates and independants.”  As we saw in 2006, candidates abandoned their core principles and tried to chase down middle of the road voters failed.  Those who succeeded were either Dems trying to appeal to the fringes of the right or staunchly conservative candidates.  Republicans who tried to seek out fringes of the left failed.  I think that does not bode well for Guiliani, especially in Colorado, but perhaps nationwide.

Also, if I were Guiliani, I would run as far away from Holtzman as possible…
