At Least She's Not Your Niece

UPDATE: Crystal Ann Tancredo swears it’s true, Post-Independent reports “no final word” from Rep. Tom Tancredo’s office.

As the Glenwood Springs Post-Independent reported yesterday:

A woman who told police Colorado Congressman and presidential candidate Tom Tancredo is her uncle was recently arrested in New Castle after an alleged racially motivated altercation.

New Castle Police arrested Crystal Ann Tancredo, 26, outside the Burning Mountain Bowl shortly before midnight Sept. 4. She was booked into the Garfield County Jail on suspicion of second-degree assault on a peace officer, ethnic intimidation, resisting arrest, harassment and disorderly conduct.

Tancredo posted a $7,000 bond shortly after the arrest, according to the Garfield County Combined Courts office.

Carlos Espinosa, a press secretary to Rep. Tom Tancredo, said, “Tom said that he is not aware of any relative, niece or anyone related to him that he’s aware of by the name Crystal Ann or anything along those lines.”

Be that as it may, Ms. Tancredo had her own ideas about the perks that come with her last name:

According to an arrest affidavit, a New Castle Police officer heard loud voices and swearing as several people walked from a patio near the bar at the Burning Mountain Bowl to its parking lot. He told them to “knock it off” and identified himself as a police officer.

“I believed that a fight was on the verge of breaking out,” the officer wrote.

The officer separated the parties, two of whom turned out to be Crystal Tancredo and her boyfriend. Both said they had nothing to do with the altercation and were leaving. But the officer wrote in his affidavit that a bartender later said Tancredo pushed a male in the chest.

The affidavit says while the officer was waiting to hear back from dispatch, Tancredo was yelling at the man police believe was pushed, calling him a “(expletive) wetback” and saying that he and the others don’t even have their immigration papers. The “enraged” man the officer believe was pushed yelled back at Tancredo, the affidavit says.

The officer told Tancredo to stop using foul language and she continued, saying that her uncle is Tom Tancredo, the elected official who is running for President, according to the affidavit.

The officer told Crystal Tancredo’s boyfriend, Miguel Angel Velasquez, that he was under arrest for a restraining order violation. Tancredo became very upset and refused to move away from Velasquez, the affidavit says, stating something like, “I don’t have to move, my uncle is Tom Tancredo.”

Tancredo was instructed to leave or she would be arrested, when she yelled, “What, you are going to take the wetback’s word over ours? We are Americans,” the affidavit says.

She demanded Velasquez’ debit card to bond him out of jail and at one point broke loose of his sister’s bear-hug to approach the officer and demand the debit card again, the affidavit says. The officer wrote that she resisted while he handcuffed her…

We’re actually somewhat sympathetic with Tom Tancredo on this one. If you’ve ever had a black sheep in your family, you know how embarrassing they can be. You might deny knowing him or her as well after they party too hearty and wind up in the local police blotter.

Of course, if Tancredo becomes president, he can always pardon her.

  1. Is she actually a relative?  More importantly, why are supposed to prejudge one man on what someone who may or may not be somehow related to him may or may not have done?  Are we now judging every politician on what people connected to them have done without waiting for the facts?

Honestly, even limiting the discussion to state politics it would seem there are more interesting things to comment on.

  2. If you look back over the past  year or so, you will find quite a few examples of this kind of post. Someone at Pols thinks that this is fun, that we should all jump at the chance to get catty. Oddly enough it rarely gets a rise, but you can bet the farm that the next chance they get we’ll get an invitation to a mud bath.

It would be pretty hard to find an important political figure, contemporary or historical, who doesn’t have an idiot relative, an embarrassment in the youthful past or, at least, one really dumb public statement or vote. The voters don’t really care. Why do we?

    1. TT makes his big issue illegal latinos and when arrested she is screaming about “wetbacks.” She represents one of the consequences of TT’s proposed policies.

It’s like when Jeb Bush was pushing for stronger actions against drug dealers and his daughter was busted with illegal (prescription) drugs. It all ties together.

Would be interesting to know if they are related…

    2. niece, ya’ll would be screaming that someone is just trying to make something out of nothing. But since it is a relative of TT, let’s take this opportunity to bash him some more. Like it is his fault.
      Pretty lame…….
Remember Billy Carter, brother of that worthless peanut farmer/president?
      Same thing, who cares?

      1. Amongst other quiet deeds, JC negotiated a truce between Israel and Egypt that has not been violated and still in effect thirty years later.  Pretty good work, no?

              1. ….but you knew it couldn’t last.  It ended up going where everything else that crosses his mind ends up…..being about the Clintons!
                  It’s not a vast right-wing conspiracy, Hillary….it’s more like a petty, right-wing obsession!

      2. If this was the Hildabeast’s niece, ya’ll would be screaming that someone is just trying to make something out of nothing. But since it is a relative of TT, let’s take this opportunity to bash him some more.

Well…….. maybe. But keep in mind that this Tancredo gal made this news by insisting that she get some kind of preferential treatment because of who her uncle is. That’s what makes this episode amusing, otherwise it’s just another outtake from Cops.

    3. and the two front page articles I understand that paper ran, would make more sense if she had been confirmed as his neice.  Until then, shouldn’t this have been one “cop shop” blurb only?

  3. For argument’s sake lets say she’s not his niece. She’s just (allegedly) some random, violent racist who invokes the name of Tancredo.

What does that say about Tancredo’s message and supporters?

      1. If you’re going to allege that then give some PROOF. Like a newspaper link backing that up.

I know you’re the designated Tancredo cheerleader but that’s too much.

  4. “Tom said that he is not aware of any relative, niece or anyone related to him that he’s aware of by the name Crystal Ann or anything along those lines.”

Quote above seems to me to be a strong statement that they aren’t related.  OR, is this a “disownership” of a family member as others here suggested, re: “I’m not aware ? “
