Denver Election Fiasco, Act 2

Botching an election in Denver may qualify you for a lucrative consulting gig with the city. Former Clerk and Recorder Wayne Vaden, who helped run the Election Day Debacle, may soon reap $150 per hour to provide his dubious “services” to another city agency.

And Anthony Rainey, the IT wizard who presided over the Election Day computer meltdown, is still on the city payroll, collecting more than $10K since he was put on leave.

Mayor Hickenlooper swore that Election Day problems made his blood boil, but a few blizzards and a cold snap have cooled him off. He’s apparently backing away from his pledge to take responsibility for and fix Election Day problems.

Case in point: Hickenlooper listlessly endorses the proposed charter change to replace the election commission with an elected clerk. He told the Rocky yesterday: “Even though I don’t think it’s the perfect solution, I am going to support it.”

He can afford to shrug indifferently now that voter outrage has cooled.

And the city can afford to pay not only Vaden and Rainey, but Sequoia Voting Systems, the vendor responsible for multiple screw-ups leading to the Election Day meltdown. Sequoia is being paid to run Denver’s January 30 Sudden-Death Election, all for the sake of restoring voter confidence.

Positively chilling.

There seems to be no one associated with or who has read about the Election Commission problesm who doesn’t agree that Anthony Rainey should be fired, and now.

They should just fire him outright. If he threatens to sue…let him! But, alas, our city usaually finds it more convenient to settle than to fight back against this kind of blackmail.

And you think they take a long time to fire someone now. Just think what it will be like if the idiot Charter change passes and makes them all Career Service!
