Aside from the fact that it sounds like an episode of West Wing, didn’t a candidate in Colorado lose an election to a dead astronaut in the not too distant past.
The astronaut (Jack Sweigert of Apollo 13 – Kevin Bacon in the movie) was elected to the old 6th Dist in Arapahoe and Jeffco in 1982 and died of cancer before he could be sworn in. A special election was held in 1983 to which Dan Schaeffer was elected and served until we got stuck with Tancredo. There was a dead guy who ran against Tony Grampsas before Tony died some years ago and only beat him by about 1,000. And of course, When Mel Carnahan of Mo. died in a plane crash a couple of days before the election, he went on to beat an incumbent Republican anyway and then his wife was appointed.

How do you run attack ads against a dead guy. As soon as someone dies, everyone remembers how good a guy he was and you look like a jerk if you try to trash his reputation.
That is to say, a “Vote for me I’m warm and breathing” platform.
“My opponent is wrong, dead wrong.”
“We need someone to breathe new life into the government”
“We need someone that wont just lie there as if nothing is happening.”

But there was a US house race with the dem candidate who was a female Iraq war vet. She had lost both her legs over there. Her opponent said something to the effect of she wants to cut and run in Iraq. That takes nerve.
By the way, where did you disappear to?
The VFW gave their official support to her non-vet R competitor. He won.

Aside from the gay marriage ban being enacted in every state except Arizona, was the despicable actions of Ms. Duckworth’s competitor and his election; and Jean schmidt being reelected.
Where was the “liberal” media when he did the cut and run gaffe? They were willing to jump on Kerry for an obvious botched joke. You’d think they could jump an insensitive comment about our troops.
As for the Schmidthead–what are her constituents thinking? Or are they?
There was lots I had to take care of at home and work and CPols was dragging my energy away from it. Besides I figured it would start getting nasty as it came down to the wire and I decided I didn’t really need it. But I’m back and intend to come online only a couple of times each day. Now that campaigning is over and the silly wingnuts go away to lick their wounds this should get interesting as policy and law get debated more and politicians get smeared less – at least until the Denver mayor’s race heats up (if anyone cares to challenge Hick, that is).
Maybe some of the “minimal government” Republican crowd voted for the dead woman, too.
