Dead Candidates Better Than Republicans

  • by: Colorado Pols

How widespread was the wave for Democratic candidates? Republicans couldn’t even beat a dead candidate in South Dakota. As the Associated Press reports:

A woman who died two months ago won a county commissioner’s race in Jerauld County on Tuesday. Democrat Marie Steichen, of Woonsocket, got 100 votes, defeating incumbent Republican Merlin Feistner, of Woonsocket, who had 64 votes.

Jerauld County Auditor Cindy Peterson said she believes the county board will have to meet to appoint a replacement for Steichen. Peterson said she’ll check with the state’s attorney to be sure that’s the process.

Peterson said voters knew Steichen had died.

“They just had a chance to make a change, and we respect their opinion.”

They just had a chance to make a change, and we respect their opinion. Wow. Voters were so eager for a change, they didn’t care that the Democrat WASN’T EVEN ALIVE.

  1. Aside from the fact that it sounds like an episode of West Wing, didn’t a candidate in Colorado lose an election to a dead astronaut in the not too distant past.

    1. The astronaut (Jack Sweigert of Apollo 13 – Kevin Bacon in the movie) was elected to the old 6th Dist in Arapahoe and Jeffco in 1982 and died of cancer before he could be sworn in.  A special election was held in 1983 to which Dan Schaeffer was elected and served until we got stuck with Tancredo.  There was a dead guy who ran against Tony Grampsas before Tony died some years ago and only beat him by about 1,000.  And of course, When Mel Carnahan of Mo. died in a plane crash a couple of days before the election, he went on to beat an incumbent Republican anyway and then his wife was appointed.

    2. election.

CNN.com – Republican senator loses to dead rival in Missouri …

The late Gov. Mel Carnahan collected enough votes to beat out incumbent Republican Sen. John Ashcroft for the U.S. Senate seat from Missouri.

The incumbent Ashcroft was left running against a dead man after his opponent, the popular sitting governor, died in a plane crash on October 16. By that time, it was too late to remove Carnahan’s name from the ballot.

No one had ever posthumously won election to the Senate, though voters on at least three occasions chose deceased candidates for the House.

  2. …the only GOOD Democrat is a DEAD Democrat.

Looks like the best candidate won. Gotta love that.

How DO you go home and tell your family… guys… I lost… to a STIFF.

Something else the Republicans desperately wish the could do – get STIFF.

  3. How do you run attack ads against a dead guy.  As soon as someone dies, everyone remembers how good a guy he was and you look like a jerk if you try to trash his reputation.

    1. “My opponent is wrong, dead wrong.”
“We need someone to breathe new life into the government”
“We need someone that wont just lie there as if nothing is happening.”

        1. But there was a US house race with the dem candidate who was a female Iraq war vet. She had lost both her legs over there. Her opponent said something to the effect of she wants to cut and run in Iraq. That takes nerve.

By the way, where did you disappear to?

            1. Aside from the gay marriage ban being enacted in every state except Arizona, was the despicable actions of Ms. Duckworth’s  competitor and his election; and Jean schmidt being reelected.

              1. Where was the “liberal” media when he did the cut and run gaffe? They were willing to jump on Kerry for an obvious botched joke. You’d think they could jump an insensitive comment about our troops.

As for the Schmidthead–what are her constituents thinking? Or are they?

          1. There was lots I had to take care of at home and work and CPols was dragging my energy away from it. Besides I figured it would start getting nasty as it came down to the wire and I decided I didn’t really need it. But I’m back and intend to come online only a couple of times each day. Now that campaigning is over and the silly wingnuts go away to lick their wounds this should get interesting as policy and law get debated more and politicians get smeared less – at least until the Denver mayor’s race heats up (if anyone cares to challenge Hick, that is).
