House Republicans are hard at work this week in Washington D.C. cutting the price of eggs and other critical household items by barring transgender athletes.
As The New York Times reports:
A divided House on Tuesday approved legislation that aims to bar transgender women and girls from participating in school athletic programs designated for female students, as Republicans sought to wring political opportunity from a social issue that helped them win the 2024 elections.
The bill, approved almost entirely along party lines on a vote of 218 to 206, would prohibit federal funding from going to K-12 schools that include transgender students on women’s sports teams. It faces a steep challenge in the Senate, where seven Democrats would have to join Republicans to move it past a filibuster and to a final vote…
…Democrats, who dubbed the bill the “Child Predator Empowerment Act,” said it was a dangerous invasion of privacy for young girls that would put them at greater risk. They also pointed to the bill as the latest example of an unhealthy fixation among Republicans with trying to restrict the rights of transgender individuals, when they could be spending their time passing legislation to create jobs or reduce the prices of groceries.
Representative Jim McGovern, Democrat of Massachusetts, said bluntly that the bill was an example of Republicans’ “creepy obsession with your kids’ private parts” and that it would fuel more hate against a small and vulnerable population of transgender children that already faces higher rates of bullying and mental health issues.
Colorado freshman Rep. Jeff Crank (R-Colorado Springs) was a co-sponsor of HR 28, the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025.” All four Republicans from Colorado — Crank, Lauren Boebert, Jeff Hurd, and Gabe Evans — voted “YES” on this critical legislation.
After the vote, House Speaker Mike Johnson used the Bible to defend this anti-trans legislation:
“We know from Scripture, and from nature, that men are men and women are women, and men cannot become women,” Johnson said in a news conference immediately after the vote…
…Johnson said he was referring to a passage in Genesis, and when asked…how he responded to different interpretations of that passage by Christians, including traditions that ordain openly transgender people, he said the Bible was “pretty clear.”
“Well, it goes back to the first book — Genesis: male and female, he made them,” Johnson said. “I’m not sure there’s another interpretation, but everybody’s open to interpreting Scripture however they will.”
Indeed.
As The Washington Post explains, House Republicans are planting a flag that banning transgender athletes from participating in sports ranks as one of their #1 issues:
The measure was last debated in 2023, when not a single Democrat voted yes. Since then, Republicans have repeatedly pressed the matter as a threat to girls’ and women’s sports, spending at least $111 million on political ads making the case last year…
…“Republicans fearmonger about the trans community to divert attention from the fact they have no real solutions to help everyday Americans,” said Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Oregon). [Pols emphasis]
We’re sure House Republicans will take up the issue of grocery prices next.

Let’s say people came from foreign country and their kid is trans. These people become your neighbors. Explain this policy. Explain why their kid can’t participate.
Let’s say they aren’t foreign…
Let’s say they were your family…
In a United States with a functioning Supreme Court this legislation would get quickly tossed based on its intent as evidenced by the type of justifying comments spouting from Imam Johnson and the rest if the fundamentalist madrasa cohort. In these United States transitioners will probably soon have to worry that our disfunctional Supremes will be able to manufacture historical justifications for their burnings and pressings as demon possessed heretics.
PS. Every “first book” intetpreter that listens to and heeds the voice of The Almighty knows that the price of eggs won’t being coming down until Congress finally rids California of all its DEI firefighters. (See Jon Stewart’s monologue from this past Monday’s The Daily Show.)
PPS to Pastor Speaker Johnson: So, in which book of scripture did your Almighty create and set forth the
rulescommandments of football? Basketball? Cage wrestling?Democrats seem determined to sink further and further into irrelevancy.
Girls should play girls sports; boys should play boys sports — it is as elemental as the sky is blue and the Earth is round.
A political organization that cannot answer "what is a woman" is not ever going to have sufficient credibility with average working/middle class Americans in persuading them that they have a plan to fix the economy or anything else. The MAGAs have laid this trap for smarmy, 'we have superior knowledge', bourgois Democrats … and the Democrats just keep falling into it.
Trans kids have enough problems without self styled experts such as yourself weighing in to "protect girls". Why are you taking on this crusade? What is your stake in it? I doubt the "progressive" part of your moniker.
Is it OK with you that trans kids suicidality increases by 72% after states pass anti-trans laws?
The answer to the question "What is a woman?" is more complex than it used to be – but welcome to the 21st century, dude. Many things are more complex now.
The following is from reddit user Mircalla Blue:
How do you answer the question, "what is a woman"?
Answering your question is easy, joe: a woman is a person who has a body part under their clothing that Trump likes to grab.
I would say, " A woman is someone who is born biologically female, or someone who identifies with the female gender."
Nobody has ever actually asked me that unless they think it's a gotcha moment. My friends don't try to entrap me with words.
I do remember that the first time I saw "pregnant people", I was offended. I'm no longer offended by that – I get that a person can identify as male and / or non-binary, and still be able to become pregnant.
I understand the fear that the female identity will be erased by embracing trans people. But I don't actually think we're in any danger of that happening. Inclusivity does not mean erasure, contrary to every white supremacist who hates DEI.
"…..every white supremacist who hates DEI."
Instead of blaming the well deserving white supremacists, maybe progressives should just look in the mirror. The messaging in last year's campaign was too much of the usual tone-deafness that was had during Biden's term. The progressives meekly sat back and allowed the far right to define Kamala, just like with Hillary in 2016. The heavy emphasis on trans-gender kids implied that progressives don't care about normal kids. Earlier in the term, progressives got killed on the "got to protect kids at all costs" messaging from the righties around the book ban issues and the drag queen story hour issue. Change? I doubt it.
I mean, CHB, you blame progressives for everything. It's kind of a knee-jerk reaction. Perhaps some moderation is required?
I will keep on blaming white supremacists for their racist ideology, their words and their actions. Looking in the mirror on that one will not be helpful. I also did not see Kamala Harris letting any group define her. There are a lot of factors in Trump's return to power, but blaming progressives for all of it does not compute.
CHB you are just spouting off and exposing your own biases. You have no evidence that any of those positions cost the election, nor for your claim that progressives sat meekly back. You are also opining in a fictional world where the Biden admin wasn't funding a genocide and the Kamala campaign was unable to chart a different course.
sorry kwtree I meant that question for Independent"Progressive".
Here's the head scratcher that really opened my mind about this. Babies born with intersex genitals are typically assigned a gender by their parents and doctors. What if they choose wrong, and that baby grows up identifying as the opposite gender? Or how male fetus with 5-alpha-reductase deficiency, which disrupts the conversion of testosterone and diminishes the masculinazation of genitalia? Those babies are often assigned female and find their brains disagreeing.
Those are just two example of many more where a person could have a brain that does not agree with their assigned gender presentation. And the reactionary right just wants these people, these individually valuable and important people, to just disappear. It's gross.
Kwtree, 'Pregnant people" doesn't offend me nearly as much as a man saying "We're pregnant" referring to his partner. i always want to ask him if he's going to carry the pregnancy for the second trimester or the third.
