Who will be Dan Maes' running mate?

  • by: CastleMan

Dan Maes had better get busy and pick a running mate. That is, if he isn’t convinced by Wadhams’ men to surrender the nomination he won this week.

He’s got an interesting choice to make. He needs someone that will appeal to his Tea Party base, but who might also bring some GOoPers away from Tancredo.

With no further ado, here are some possible candidates:

1. State Rep. Kent Lambert, R-Colorado Springs

2. State Sen. Dave Schultheis, R-Colorado Springs

3. State Sen. Kevin Lundberg, R-Berthoud

4. State Sen. Ted Harvey, R-Highlands Ranch

5. State Rep. B.J. Nikkel, R-Berthoud

6. Former State Sen. John Andrews

7. Jon Caldara

8. John Elway

9. State Sen. Josh Penry

10. Libby Szabo

Any other suggestions?

What’s your reaction to these ideas?

    1. It seems to me, and I may be wrong and unfair, but the folks endorsing Maes are political has beens and losers.

Someone who wants a last picture in the paper may run with Maes.

Or there may be a Tea Party rookie who wants to test the waters and get some name recognition for another day.

Whoever runs with Maes will soon learn, according to rumors I’ve heard, that he’s a difficult colleague. There’s an untold reason, I suspect, that some of his early supporters gave up on him and left his campaign in disgust and/or frustration.

This means, I’m guessing with no direct experience in working with Maes, that his Lt. Gov. will be a very submissive type, willing to stay in the shadows and drive the car.

If I were asked to be the running mate, I would spend several days doing due diligence. I would talk to Freda Poundstone and others who were volunteers in the campaign and no longer are.

I would insist on talking to everyone Maes ever worked for, with and over. I’d ask, just what kind of guy is Dan Maes? Are you still speaking? Would you hire him or work for him again? What is your worst story about Maes? What’s your best story? If someone refused to comment, I’d take that as a big red flag.

If Maes couldn’t and wouldn’t put me in contact with a couple of dozen of his former associates, I’d beg off.

Of course, Maes has a deadline for selecting his running mate. And he may have waited to the last moment so that no one would have time to really check him out and think about what they were doing to themselves by agreeing to run with Dan Maes. After all, Dick Wadhams reportedly has called Maes a “joke” and that label may be contagious.

Hickenlooper has picked a highly qualified running mate. He’s set the bar extremely high for Maes and Tom Tancredo, imho.

In the end, no one votes for the running mate. So I’m not sure how important the running mate will be. The running mate probably is more likely to hurt the candidate than to help both Tancredo and Maes, but especially Maes.

      1. I’ve got an additional point.

Several times during the campaign, Dan Maes has thrown his wife and daughter under the bus, blaming them for lousy bookkeeping, etc.

Given that history, it seems to me that Dan Maes’ running mate has to be prepared to be blamed for everything that goes wrong during the campaign. Things have a way of going wrong in Maes’ campaign, so his prospective running mate should be someone who doesn’t mind being thrown under the bus, run over and pilloried by Maes.

Dan Maes of, of course, has been saying “me too” to Scott McInnis for months. So he’ll say this is a “non issue.”

  1. I like Mitchell, but that’s probably not going to work. The best I can come up with right now is Elway. Star power, solid businessman, but not more of a politician than Dan.

  2. Maes isn’t going to draw a “thinking” man (or woman) onto his ticket.

What he’s going to need is someone “on a mission from God” — (cue the Blues Brothers clip) — literally.  One who’s heard the voice and is willing to honor the calling, a modern day Noah.

That leaves you with Andrews and Schultheis from the list above.

    1. Last I heard, the former state senator was having daily two-way conversations with God.

Reminds me of a funny quote: “Talking to God is called prayer; God talking to you is called schizophrenia.”

  3. I think the question will be who is willing to run with him? Most of his party is running AWAY from him.

I would say you can write-off any mainstream politicos. From the list above that leaves Schulteis, Lundberg, Andrews, or Caldera.

I doubt Lundberg would be willing to give up his senate seat to play Pancho to Maes’ Don Quixote.

Caldara has a ballot issue campaign to ru(i)n. Schulteis is getting a little long and tooth for these kind of adventures. That leaves Andrews, and he is crazy enough he might be willing to do it.

Not on you list that came to my mind was Janet Rowland.

  4. 1. State Rep. Kent Lambert, R-Colorado Springs. Brings nothing to the ticket

    2. State Sen. Dave Schultheis, R-Colorado Springs LOL

    3. State Sen. Kevin Lundberg, R-Berthoud  Brings nothing to add to the base

    4. State Sen. Ted Harvey, R-Highlands Ranch Isn’t that strong

    5. State Rep. B.J. Nikkel, R-Berthoud No

    6. Former State Sen. John Andrews Older news

    7. Jon Caldara LOL

    8. John Elway Would be good, but wouldn’t say yes

    9. State Sen. Josh Penry LOL if he’s on this list

    10. Libby Szabo wt?

Ray Martinez will most likely be it.

Lionel Rivera may be on the short list as well. Shawn Mitchell is on the short list, but doesn’t bring much outa the base, though he’d be the best State Senate/State House pick
