Well, It IS About Russia

Donald Trump.

CNN reports on the President’s Sunday morning Tweetstorm:

President Donald Trump on Sunday compared the special counsel investigation to McCarthyism, saying Robert Mueller made the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy “look like a baby.”

“Study the late Joseph McCarthy, because we are now in period with Mueller and his gang that make Joseph McCarthy look like a baby! Rigged Witch Hunt!,” Trump tweeted.

McCarthy led a Cold War-era inquisition of alleged Communists who he claimed had infiltrated American governmental institutions. The Wisconsin Republican’s assertions, famously voiced in a speech in 1950, contributed to the paranoia and fear known as “the Red Scare.” A special Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee investigated McCarthy’s initial claims about Communists infiltrating the State Department and found them to be “a fraud and a hoax.”

Trump’s invoking of Sen. Joe McCarthy to discredit the investigation into his campaign’s collusion with the Russian government is…well, it’s clever in one sense, since both events involved  Russia. But where McCarthy’s investigations collapsed along with McCarthy’s own credibility after being found to be baseless, the investigation into Donald Trump’s collusion with Russia has found plenty of hard evidence.

Also,

“So, Joe McCarthy was a demagogue. And we haven’t heard a public syllable from Bob Mueller in more than a year,” Hayden said. “And I have got to add that McCarthy’s lawyer, Roy Cohn, became Donald Trump’s personal lawyer — lawyer and mentor for decades. I mean, the irony here is just amazing.”

Cohn, who died in 1986, worked closely with Trump beginning in the 1970s. For more than a decade, Cohn represented Trump on construction deals and his lawsuit against the NFL.

It’s a theme with this President to not merely be debunked, but found absurd in ways you wouldn’t have guessed.

  1. This is just more trying to confuse the issues and attempt to posture as a victim of “unfair” investigations.

It won’t work with anyone old enough to actually remember McCarthyism, the Red Scare, the Cold War, or with a basic knowledge of post WWII history.  It won’t work withstudents whose American history classes actually managed to teach modern American history (most get bogged down in the Civil War and the Industrial era).

It might work with Trump supporters who have a vague remembrance of “The Crucible” from American Lit classes. But that’s a pretty small group.

As someone who has taught that American literature canon, I would like to think that its lasting lessons were about integrity, objective truth as opposed to superstition, and the need for separation of church and state.

So this latest attempt at turd polishing will succeed only in giving the Trump base and its echo chamber at Fox News some short-lived talking points.

    1. There's a new book out: "House of Trump. House of Putin." Goes into fair detail exploring Trump's alleged ties with Russian mafia figures dating back to the 1980s. Lots of apparent money laundering going on, by Trump for Russians.
