Last Thursday, something crazy happened.
In truth, it happened days and even weeks before when voters cast their ballots. But on Thursday afternoon, the Associated Press formally called the Republican primary election to nominate their candidate for governor of Colorado.
And it’s Victor Marx.
Over the last few months, ProgressNow Colorado has been sounding the alarm about Victor Marx. Marx came out of nowhere to seize control over once-sleepy Republican race for governor with support from Rep. Lauren Boebert, and now Marx has defeated the candidate that insider Republicans were desperately hoping would win the primary election, Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer. Marx’s sudden rise to power echoes that of Donald Trump’s own hostile takeover of the Republican Party a decade ago.
But that’s where the two stories part ways. Because while Trump went on to become President, Victor Marx could lead Colorado Republicans to the biggest election disaster since 2010, when Republican nominee Dan Maes only received 11% of the vote in the general election. This could result in a cascade of losses down the ballot in other races. [1]
That’s why we were thrilled to see Victor Marx’s own campaign help make our content warning about his impending danger go viral before the election. In a race decided by less than 2,000 votes, with Marx’s help, our reels received tens of thousands of views in the final days before June 30th. [2] [3]
It was…synergy. And although Victor Marx didn’t realize it, we had a common purpose.
Chaos.
Today, Colorado Republicans are scrambling to plot a new strategy around the serial liar and self-professed killer who just won the party’s nomination for governor. Marx once claimed to have rescued over 45,000 women and children from slavery across the world before removing that claim from his website under scrutiny. [4] Marx’s multimillion-dollar “ministry” in which he conducts “exorcism” by phone has faced allegations of “grossly overstating” its global reach and work. [5] And yes, Marx claims to have personally killed an undetermined number of people.
Don’t weep for Barb Kirkmeyer. Kirkmeyer was no moderate, and her campaign would have quickly run aground over her extreme anti-abortion positions, even supporting a ban on Plan B, as well as her far-right record that included an attempt by Weld County to secede from the rest of Colorado that Kirkmeyer supported. It may be that Republicans had no good choices this year, only a lesser of evils.
By a small plurality, Colorado Republicans chose their own worst-case scenario. When we labeled Victor Marx “Colorado’s Most Dangerous Conservative,” we were telling the absolute truth.
With that said, there may have been some confusion about exactly who he was dangerous to, and we apologize for that.
In the coming months, with your help, we’ll make sure every voter in Colorado understands the historic mistake Republican voters just made.
It’s the least we can do.
