David Sirota: Paid Shill for the Anti-Tax Crowd

  • by: PERA hopeful

“How can you tell the virulent anti-tax fervor still dominates American politics in genuinely a bipartisan way? Look no further than…” David Sirota.

My sense of irony is getting a workout today.  I got home and pulled up the predictable Sirota CoPols rant about “the anti-tax, anti-government ideology is alive and well in both parties.”  Why do I find this ironic?  Because as I was driving home, I was listening to AM760 and heard David Sirota doing a commercial for a brokerage that went something like this:

“What if you died and all your retirement was eaten up by taxes?  Go to XXX Brokerage to learn how you can protect your assets from the tax man!  You want to make sure your family is cared for after you die, and XXX Brokerage will show you ways to structure your retirement accounts to keep the IRS away from your family’s inheritance!”

I’m waiting to see Sirota walking around with a sign that says, “End the Death Tax!”

Seriously, am I the only one who sees a disconnect here?  Sirota’s newest toot is badgering Hickenlooper for saying he’s going to cut spending and taxes, while at the same time Sirota is cutting commercials for a brokerage that will help people can avoid taxes on their inheritances.

  1. I was going to call the firm and ask them if they had any idea whom it was they were paying to promote themselves, but then realized I have a life, and didn’t.

  2. will say anything for anyone provided they give him a check.

He worked on Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer’s campaign even though Schweitzer campaigned in support of a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage in Montana.  Sirota speaks out in support of equality for gays and lesbians, but is willing to sell us out if it pays the bills….all the while condemning others who are not “perfect” on his select issues.

      1. he makes noise for a living and don’t make the mistake of thinking he stands for anything.  He’s just a low, low rent Rush Limbaugh.  Speaking of Rush, doesn’t it seem like Beck has drawn all the attention?  When’s the last time there’s been a really good Rush generated dust up? Same goes for O’Really. They must be so jealous, stuck with their aging demo, while Beck gets all the fringe adoration. But at least they all, unlike Sirota, are still making really big money as amoral conscious free shills. They don’t sell themselves cheap.

  3. Bennet folk seem to have a problem getting over the primary.

    I thought Bennet won.

I could of sworn I heard him the other day talking about how the stimulus he voted for didn’t work and how he was immoral for not paying for it.

    Ah, Bennet must have won.

That must be the reason the Dems think people should vote for him.

    Now, I get it.

  4. THIS is the guy who wails on about the “professional left” and how “bought off” all the progressive groups in Colorado are?

Wow, Sirota. Pop goes the credibility.

  5. This post is straight-up libelous. Our show airs ads for Presidential Brokerage, and when we discuss taxes it is through the prism of financial planning. I never use terms like “the tax man” or such incendiary language as I am inaccurately quoted in this post. And I explicitly say in the ads – and I believe – that there’s no inconsistency between advocating for a more fair and equitable tax system – including higher tax rates –  and making sure that citizens aren’t paying extra taxes that they don’t have to pay under current law if they prudently plan for their financial future.

Yes, you can be for tax reform and higher taxes and also believe individuals should prudently plan their savings and retirement to not incur needless tax penalties. There’s no inconsistency there.

Even if you somehow don’t believe that, this post, as I said, is libelous. It quotes me in a word-for-word way saying something I do not say. I will be contacting site administrators about this. You have a right to dislike me – you do not have a right to put words in my mouth.

    1. I said, “It went something like this.”  I also clearly changed the name of the brokerage.  In case anybody else was confused, I was not quoting the ad directly.

      1. You quoted me directly, and even if it was a paraphrase (which it isn’t because you use direct quotes) it’s deliberately – and thus, libelously – inaccurate.

Look up the definition of libel. To insist someone did or said something that you know they did not say is a classic definition of libel.

        1. But your ad struck me as completely at odds with your stand on rich people and corporations avoiding sundry taxes.  I do not have a transcript or script of the ad, but I’m sure you do.  If you think that your exact words are not inconsistent with the positions you have taken in other contexts, then go ahead and post them so everybody will know your exact words.

And I didn’t quote you directly, nor did I say I was quoting you directly, nor (I bet) did anyone on here think I was quoting you directly.  If I had said, “Sirota said,” then that would be a direct quote.  Since I said, “It went something like this,” it was clearly not a quote.

        2. Nobody believed PERA hopeful was attempting to quote you word for word. It was perfectly clear from the diary that it was only half-remembered from something overheard while driving. The gist of it is accurate, as you’re confirming here.

I think people here are way too nasty to you in general, but PERA’s right in this case. If you put up the actual text of the ad (which is obviously much easier for you to obtain than for PERA), you could prove him/her wrong. Because right now, it’s one paraphrase against another, and it’s not making you look good.

          1. Listen to the show, listen to the ad. It’s not my word against his. The ad runs on a 50,000 watt radio station, all throughout the state. The proof is all right there.

I’m totally fine with people disagreeing with my opinions. But to quite literally MANUFACTURE words that I did not – and do not – say, and then ascribe nefarious motive to those words, is libel. Plain and simple. It’s totally unacceptable.

        3. Mr. Sirota, I suggest you look up Sullivan v. New York Times.  You are a public figure who ceaselessly spews your views — and, apparently, those views are for hire to those with ready cash.

You have a right to huckster, but other people have a right to criticize you for huckstering.

            Deal with it.

          1. Listen to the show, listen to the ad. It’s not my word against his. The ad runs on a 50,000 watt radio station, all throughout the state. The proof is all right there.

I’m totally fine with people disagreeing with my opinions. But to quite literally MANUFACTURE words that I did not – and do not – say is libel, plain and simple. It’s totally unacceptable.

            1. Yeah, like that’s ever gonna happen?

I already get enough of your “show” on this site.

Actually feel you’ve been libeled?  Then, go ahead and sue already, or STFU.  (Although you’ll probably choose sue, just for the attention.)

            2. Larry Flynt ran an ad parody “The first time” where Jerry Falwell allegedly described making love to his mother in an outhouse.

quite literally MANUFACTURE words that I did not – and do not – say

Yep, exactly that.  The Supreme Court ruled in Flynt’s favor.  That parody thing.

You are free to argue that your poop smells like roses — though I somehow doubt it.  But to try to bully and silence dissent with threats of libel suits is both demeaning and just stupid on your part.

Whether you want to accept it or not, people are free to criticize you.

  6. In addition to the above comments about being a public figure and proving actual malice, it seems PERA’s sense of irony is honed finer than yours.

I tried to find your ad online. The brokerage’s website has a listin of their on-air ads, but no link to listen to them. Unfortunately, I’m never going to listen to your show nor 760 am, so I explored the brokerage’s website.

    Some quotes I found:

In regards to the planning goals:

    1) have a transition-into-retirement strategy that allows you to protect and enjoy what you have accumulated, 2) avoid heavy and needless taxation of your retirement funds and – when you’re finished using them – your legacy is handed intact to your beneficiaries as you intended.

And in Avoiding the Tax Trap:

You absolutely need to do all you can to avoid excessive taxation – and we have the resources, and solutions to help you

There is nothing wrong with planning for your future financial security, but it is ironic that you post diaries that espouse the dangers of “the anti-tax, anti-government zeitgeist” yet advocate for a company which promotes that which you railed against.

    1. There’s nothing ironic. There’s no contradiction. Advocating for more fair tax policies and higher taxes on the wealthy is not advocating for people to make stupid mistakes in their retirement planning and therefore incurring tax penalties. And a financial advisory firm that helps people plan for their retirement isn’t espousing an “anti-government zeitgeist” by helping families plan for their savings so as to not incur those needless tax penalties.

I say in my ads it is a patriotic duty to pay the taxes that we owe – and it is also a good idea for people to plan ahead for their retirement. That someone can put words in my mouth and insist that is somehow inconsistent with my advocacy for a fairer tax system is grotesque.

That this needs explaining to you suggests you have about 5 brain cells – 4 of which aren’t operating.

        1. Yes, that’s right. I’ve managed to scratch together a career where I manage to earn a living working in media. Which is more than (unfortunately) I can say for most people in this age of tragic cuts to media outlets.

So yes, guilty as charged – I manage to earn a living as a professional journalist and progressive voice in a right-wing dominated commercial radio. Indeed, it’s extremely, extremely rare – but I have been able to do it.

If that makes you jealous – which, clearly, it does – then that’s your problem. But I will put up my career as a journalist, columnist and bestselling author – and my record as an independent voice – against yours every day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

          1. Tell me again why professional journalists do paid commercials and retain their credibility?

Your independent voice appears to be for sale or rent to the highest bidder.  Three times on sunday, apparently.

So, you’re going to sue me now, right?

              Please do.

              1. And I’m here to talk about why you need alu

you have a brick house?  That’s great.  We’re offering ten percent off on aluminum siding for brick houses, this week only.

And if you don’t buy it, I’ll sue you for libel!

                1. Are you bitter because you are no longer paid for what you write and David Sirota is? You need to deal with it. Try writing something of value instead of attacking amateur posters on Colorado Pols as you often entertain yourself doing.

David Sirota is a professional and I hope he continues to provide the quality interviews and book reviews to a mostly grateful audience.  His detractors here on Colorado Pols appear to be disgruntled posters and washed up journalists.

                  1. It’s not about disgruntled posters, Sharon. Sirota has consistently shown himself, on this blog, to be high minded and thin skinned. That may work other places, but it doesn’t here. We don’t owe him respect and he has done little if anything to earn it.

It isn’t professional for him to get away with the mean spririted retorts he always comes back with (look back at his comments for a few examples).

You didn’t ask, but I’m telling you anyway, I would rather read Voyageur’s writings any day of the week, than to read the silliness Sirota mostly posts here.

          2. Your above rant could easily have come from Glenn Beck. It contains all his arrogance and all his hubris.

Glenn seriously considers himself lucky to be working in media as a “journalist” and conservative voice in a left-wing dominated commercial television industry. It’s extremely, extremely rare – but he has been able to do it.

            He’s also a best-selling NY Times author.

If that makes you jealous blah blah blah.

Hey, he’s selling shit too! Are you going to be selling gold soon?

So the difference between you two is what again??

      1. That this needs explaining to you suggests you have about 5 brain cells – 4 of which aren’t operating.

First of all, I resemble that accusation and my one brain cell takes great offense.

Secondly, well, I forgot what my second point was since my one brain cell is too busy being offended.

If you can’t take it, amigo, don’t dish it out.

  7. David Sirota is talented, honest and hard working. In my opinion and many others he is a respected journalist.  And as a best selling author and a knowledgeable radio talk show host he is bringing critical in-depth political issues to the forefront in our state.  I wouldn’t be surprised if his show goes national but it would be a terrible loss for our state.

David, I listen to your show all the time and I respect the hard work you put into the interviews and topics you present.  Please don’t let a few bitter posters and washed up journalists that aren’t nearly as talented as you, get to you. Your show is something I look forward to on my way to work each day.

      1. Who do you think will win in the general election for Senate, Bennet?

Most likely we’ll be stuck with Buck because people like you RedGreen refuse to take your head out of the sand and learn the truth.

        1. You called RedGreen’s assertion that you plus David doesn’t equal “Many Voices” a lie. Are there more “voices” standing up for Sirota’s shucking? I certainly didn’t see them. Are they in your head?

If you wanted to talk about Buck v. Bennet, well there are plenty of other Diaries on that subject.

Try to keep up. I’m starting to see why you like Sirota, he tell you how you’re supposed to think. You clearly got lost in this thread without his direction.

      1. All they want to do is trash the next victim.  They are even continuing to blame Romanoff for Bennet’s poor performance in the polls. Most times they just want to demonize others that don’t agree with them.
