Protect Medicaid: Sarah's Story

  • by: ProgressNow Colorado

(Promoted by Colorado Pols)

Sarah Metsch is not afraid. She’s fired up.

As the U.S. Senate considers yet another bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act and cut Medicaid, Americans who depend on Medicaid in-home services to get through their daily lives are speaking out. Earlier this year, a group of brave protesters with disabilities occupied the offices of Sen. Cory Gardner, dramatically calling the nation’s attention to the threat faced by Americans who rely on Medicaid services.

The latest “Graham-Cassidy” legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act would reduce federal support for Medicaid overall, phase out Medicaid expansion funding completely by 2027, and cost the state of Colorado alone $6 billion in reduced Medicaid funds. The bill would leave states with the burden of providing for Medicaid populations with reduced funding relative to current law. Colorado, a state with heavy constitutional restrictions on revenue growth and spending, would be hard-pressed to make up the difference.

Take a moment to listen to and share Sarah’s story. Then Call Sen. Cory Gardner at (202)224-5941, and tell him to REJECT Graham-Cassidy–and any other health plan that cuts Medicaid.

  1. No one wants to take away her health care. This ad is extremely dishonest. This is about able bodied adults in the Medicaid expansion who are breaking the system. We need to protect Medicaid to make it sustainable for people like Sarah.

Stop hiding behind people no one wants to hurt to protect the able bodied. You are lying about Republican intentions and scaring people for no reason. SARAH WILL ALWAYS HAVE HER HEALTH CARE.

    Enough! Repeal!

    1. You're right again. However, you forgot to mention the other half of the truth about "able bodied adults." That is fact number 1.

Fact number 2 is the United States has been at full employment since 2016. You forgot that one.

Fact number 3, you forgot this one too, is almost all of the able bodied people are working but not all of the jobs in America pay enough to cover the essentials in life like food, housing and yes, medical insurance. Medicaid is there to cover them. Your attempt at painting people on medicaid as loafers is immoral and devoid of factual support.

      1. almost all of the able bodied people are working but not all of the jobs in America pay enough to cover the essentials in life like food, housing and yes, medical insurance

That's the part they don't like to talk about. These folks are just barely hanging on working at minimum wage jobs with no benefits. That was the whole point behind Medicaid expansion. Allow folks living on the cusp to go to work but don't leave them with the Hobbesian choice of going to work without healthcare, or quitting a job and getting Medicaid.

Fluffy, wouldn't you rather have these folks contributing by working and paying into social security and Medicare taxes while continuing to get Medicaid until their earning rise high enough, than simply staying on Medicaid and collecting TANF benefits?

    2. Moldy, I'm asking again.  Do you have insurance?  If so, why?  Do you have health issues.  What are they?   Do you have prescriptions?  If so, what for.  Do you have a good paying job?  If not, why?

I think these are fair questions.  You seem eager to judge other people's circumstances so, you can pony up with your life story and face similar judgement.

  2. Not for nothing, ProgressNow, but how about you speak for the 30-ish million other Sarahs who are uninsured, even with the ACA. and join Senator Sanders' push for Medicare for All?
