Sen. Spence: McInnis' "Time Has Gone Past"

  • by: Colorado Pols

A bit awkwardly worded from state Sen. Nancy Spence, but her point is unmistakable–from this week’s Colorado Statesman:

During the 2009 legislative session, Penry often likened the political tactics of Colorado’s Democrats to those of disgraced former Texas Republican Congressman Tom DeLay, who was forced out of office after corruption charges surfaced…

Penry’s youth and his rejection of the negative aspects of the Republican Party clearly are political assets – but they won’t be enough to make winning easy.

On the other hand, McInnis, who began his two decades in elected office in the Colorado Legislature before representing the 3rd Congressional District in Washington, is considered a member of state’s old Republican guard.

His political connections and donor list are vast, his name I.D. is high, and he has an extensive voting record that includes fighting for enhanced environmental protection – an issue important to state voters.

Nevertheless, many political insiders are calling this run for office his “last chance” to regain an elected position in Colorado, and others say his political life is over.

“His time has gone past,” Spence said. “It’s time for a fresh face. Josh is the next generation of young political leaders.”

McInnis’ efforts won’t be helped by his reputation for unpredictability, Spence added.

    1. I am in no way a backer of McInnis, but Spence attacking him is ridiculous.

I’d like to add that the “fighting for enhanced environmental protection” is a red herring.  Scooter Canyons—I mean Colorado Canyons—I mean McInnis Canyons—were only created in order to prevent a National Park Service designation and the enhanced protections that go along with a NPS designation.  I’m not saying that that a BLM Monument is a bad thing, but it wasn’t exactly done out of his love for the environmental community.  That said, he is a step better than most of his GOP brethren.

  1. Penry’s youth and his rejection of the negative aspects of the Republican Party clearly are political assets…

I don’t seem to recall Penry rejecting any of the egregious statements made by his colleagues during the last legislative session.

    1. The state GOP seems convinced that the “negative aspects” (which have led to the party’s complete loss of control in Colorado) are 1) corruption and Washington Insider-itis (DeLay) and 2) acting too much like Democrats (McInnis is the poster boy for this). Penry rejects those.

    2. you should check out the video of Penry on Adam Schrager’s show immediately after the fracas to seem him condemn the remarks.

      1. It was callous, totally callous of me to suggest otherwise. I’ll give Penry the credit he’s due: he’s awful sensitive, awful empathetic, for a Republican.

  2. Has Scooter McInnis gotten even one favorable press story in the last six months?  I think the last pro-McInnis story was in 2005 when he and Ritter posed with Tom Strickland outside of Hogan and Hartson.

Someone should tell the Scooter that the increased late fees were widely publicized. Was the late fee on the car he purchased with campaign funds?

    1. McInnis’ Web site lists only two, both brief stories about McInnis endorsing the Glade Reservoir project, from the Loveland and Greeley papers.

It’s kind of like Bob Schaffer’s “news about Bob” section on his Web site last spring — there was so little good press about Bob that the campaign ran, to its credit, a decidedly mixed story from one of the Fort Collins weeklies, and not much else.
