Collusion, Treason, and Whatever Else You Want to Call It

UPDATE #2: Robert Mueller is very interested in the emails released by Donald Trump Jr. As CNN reports:

Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators plan to examine the meeting and email exchanges disclosed by Donald Trump Jr. as part of the broader Russian-meddling investigation, according to a US official briefed on the matter…

…The details of the interactions between Trump Jr., Goldstone and Veselnitskaya weren’t fully known to federal investigators until recently, according to three US officials familiar with the probe. The FBI, as part of its counter intelligence probe and the investigation into Russian meddling, has scrutinized some of Donald Trump Jr.’s business dealings and meetings even before the latest meeting was disclosed, one of the US officials said.

Now, Mueller’s probe will look at the meeting and email exchanges that Trump Jr. disclosed as part of its investigation, according to the US official briefed on the matter.

UPDATE #1: As Frank Bruni of the New York Times writes, “Mini-Donald” has made things much, much worse for President Trump:

Sometimes the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Sometimes the apple is also considerably dimmer than the tree. And sometimes the apple must be thrown under the bus so that the tree and a few of its most crucial limbs don’t tumble to the forest floor, where they’ll be chopped up and used as firewood by Democrats.

Is that the fruity fate of Donald Trump Jr.?

Donald Trump, Jr.

Chris Cillizza of CNN succinctly explains why President Trump and the rest of the Trumpettes are in serious, serious trouble:

This paragraph, from The New York Times’ latest scoop on a meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer, is completely and totally damning:

“Before arranging a meeting with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer he believed would offer him compromising information about Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Jr. was informed in an email that the material was part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s candidacy, according to three people with knowledge of the email.” [Pols emphasis]

Remember that Don Jr. has changed his story since the Times reported a meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya on Saturday.

So, even if he didn’t know the exact name or identity of the Russian lawyer he was to meet with, he knew — if he read his email — that whatever he was told in the meeting was part of a foreign government’s efforts to help choose its preferred candidate in the 2016 election.

Sit with that for a minute: The eldest son of the de facto Republican presidential nominee reportedly met with someone he knew was peddling information as part of a Russian government effort to elect his dad.

That’s stunning. There’s just no other word for it.

Take a look at what Senator Mark Warner (D-Virginia) — the vice-chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee — said late Monday:

“This is the first time that the public has seen clear evidence of senior level members of the Trump campaign meeting Russians to try to obtain information that might hurt the campaign of Hillary Clinton.”

The White House is publicly pretending that this is all no big deal, but…

  1. "Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence, (I conjure you to believe me fellow citizens) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake; since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of Republican Government."

George Washington, Farewell Address, September 19, 1796

"No puppet! No puppet! You're the puppet."

    Donald Trump, October 19, 2016.

  2. My understanding is that the elder Trump was in the building at the time. I am sure he didn't know what his son, son-in-law, and campaign manager were doing….

    1. It's time to haul every Trump, and every Trump campaign official before congress to give sworn public testimony . . .

      . . . let the perjury begin!!!!

      1. That was enlightening, cook. So, no treason charges for anyone unless it can be proved that they took up arms against the USA on behalf of an enemy with whom we are in a declared war. Too bad.

However, obstruction of justice, perjury, and conspiracy  charges still wide open! Bring the whole family!

  3. So Trump tweeted about the Clinton emails the day his son was meeting with the Russian go-between.  Then there is this:

There’s no proof that Donald Trump Sr. knew of the meeting with the Russian lawyer, though there’s this: In the week between its scheduling and its occurrence back in June 2016, he made public remarks in which he said he’d be delivering a special speech about Clinton’s wrongdoing that was set — oh so interestingly, in retrospect — for a few days after the meeting. But that meeting, we’re now told, was a bust, with no great trove of Clinton-wounding revelations, and the speech didn’t happen as promised.

It will be interesting to watch the president’s next moves. Enamored of loyalty and deaf to charges of nepotism and conflict of interest, he has kept his kids in a tight circle around him. But to survive, he may have to push this bad apple away.

Gee,  I wonder if Donald Jr. told his dad about the emails he'd gotten teasing of wonderful revelations from their Russian friends that would boost his candidacy?

Nah, never happened, right Gerbils?  You'll be posting any minute now how Donald Jr. is the real hero of this story, right?

    1. CarnHolio and his corrupt, deeply deplorable ilk were all prepped to roll out the tired, laughably and demonstrably fraudulent old "fake news" whine on this story as well, only to have Dimwit Jr. pull his own ripcord, releasing the extremely damning emails himself and setting himself up for a nice, long-overdue prison sentence — assuming his criminal-traitor father doesn't pardon him…

Oh well. Better luck next time, fascists and Nazis!

  4. Cilliza is an idiot and one of the most vapid of D.C. columnists. And he pushed the Hilllary/Benghazi email story relentlessly during the campaign. Quit quoting him!!!!
