More Assembly News

  • by: Colorado Pols

A blog called “Democracy in Progress” has the rundown on last weekend’s Douglas County Democratic Assembly. DemNotes also has an update on several county assemblies.

Elsewhere, we hear that some Democratic Party and Hispanic?leaders are hoping HD-1 candidate Margaret Atencio will pull out of the three-way Democratic primary in order to focus her efforts on Party affairs and Hispanic GOTV?(Atencio is the Second Vice-Chair of the state party). Atencio came in a distant third in the caucus last month, behind Jeanne Labuda and Alfredo Hernandez, and some Hispanic leaders are also concerned that Atencio can only split the vote at this point, giving an edge to Labuda and perhaps leaving Sen. Paula Sandoval as the only Hispanic legislator in West Denver (Rep. Fran Coleman has virtually no chance to win the seat in?SD-32).

Democratic leaders?hope to have Atencio’s full attention on Hispanic GOTV efforts, as both parties work to increase turnout among Hispanic voters. According to The Denver Post:

Latino activists in Colorado are working to steer many of the 50,000 immigration-reform protesters who marched on the State Capitol last weekend into voting booths in November.

Groups aimed at getting Latinos to the polls are hoping to register thousands over the next several months in hopes of getting the estimated 574,000 Latinos in Colorado to flex their political muscles.

  1. Margaret Atencio is one of the hardest workers in the Democratic Party as was her Late Father. Margaret did a great job on Hispanic outreach in 2002. It was Tim Knaus and his group that messed that whole thing up. Bill Ritter would be well served if he brought her into his campaign and in a high ranking position in his administration. Margaret, the Democratic Party needs you. I also think that Margaret would be happier in the Ritter Administration than in the Legislature

  2. Come on, are you sure you’re talking about the same Margaret Atencio?  She’s been completely AWOL as Second Vice Chair of the State Dems!  This is her modus operandus:  run for one office, then abandon any responsibility to that office to run for the next highest office.

The Democrats across Colorado, especially Denver, know this, that’s why she was completely shut out in 2000 from a DNC post, running fourth in a four-person race where there were three spots available.  The only reason she’s second vice chair of the Colorado Dems is because Dan Slater jumped out of that race at the last minute to run for First Vice Chair after Waak was elected.

  3. AWOL?!?!

I have yet to go to a Democratic event and Margaret not be there. I have a running joke about her that she keeps 5 copies of herself hanging in a closet so she can get to every function.

As for the caucus results from HD1, I was the one of the people who tallied those results fof the Denver Dems and HD1 had next to no votes cast at all in the HD1 straw poll. The only precincts that did straw polls clearly, from the results, did so at the instigation of one campaign or another. This has also plagued the SD32 candidates.

And about those calls for Margaret to withdraw, I still have yet to see visible support for Alfredo Hernandez from folks in the district. He does have a few well-known names backing him, but they are all from elsewhere. Then of course, so is Alfredo.

When I am at events in HD1 it is always Margaret and Jeanne I see with the local support. I think this Saturday is going to be very interesting indeed and I am looking very forward to it.

  4. You have yet to see visible support for Alfredo in the District?
Come on Dan. At Mona Moffatt’s House two weeks ago there were 15 HD 1 residents all volunteering for Alfredo. His list of supporters is the longest in HD 1 of any of the candidates. Hard working Democrats such as George and Rachel Hernandez.
Margaret Atencio is a great Democrat and would be invaluable to the Ritter Campaign. Because Alfredo has so much support people try to minimize that by claiming it is not within HD 1. It just is not so.

  5. You’re wrong on this one Dan. All three candidates knew how they fared after the caucus, so somebody had to have been keeping track.

And besides, Dan, you don’t even live in the district. How do you know?

  6. There is no finer person than Margaret Atencio.
The Ritter Campaign and the Democratic Party need her heart and soul and energy. That is what Margaret loves to do and what she does best. Alfredo Hernandez has put together a very impressive campaign. But, Margaret has the respect and loyalty of Democrats around the State.

  7. I volunteer rather often for the Denver Dems at the office and saw the results (or lack there of) of the straw polls for HD1 and SD32. Mello was doing very well in SD32 and HD1 simply did not have enough info to make any indications.

  8. By now they have had time to talk to all of the delegates and get a sense where their support is. This is not information I have because I have not spoken to the delegates themselves.

  9. Dead Presidents:
Please explain how you can say “Rep. Fran Coleman has virtually no chance to win the seat in SD-32”??

Almsot half the precincts in SD-32 are represented by Coleman now and last election cycle she recieved over 60% of the vote. So what am I missing here? Is there something you know that has you making that proclimation? Or did you just let Chris Romer write that posting for you?

    Just wondering.
