We weren’t the only ones who commented that calling Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor a racist probably wasn’t a good strategic move for conservative critics, so there’s no need to say “We told you so.” Actually, it was so blatantly obvious that this was a stupid line of attack that “we told you so” would be too generous.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich now sheepishly admits that the “racist” attack might have been a bad idea. From The Associated Press:
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday he shouldn’t have called Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor a racist, but said he was still concerned that she would bring bias to her decisions.
In a letter to supporters, the Georgia Republican said that his words had been “perhaps too strong and direct” last week when he called Sotomayor a reverse “racist,” based on a 2001 speech in which she said she hoped the rulings of a “wise Latina” would be better than those of a white male without similar experiences. Gingrich’s remarks created a furor among Sotomayor’s backers and caused problems for GOP figures who have been pushing to bring more diversity to the party.
We’ll give Gingrich some credit for belatedly realizing what a stupid attack this was for the GOP in general, but unfortunately for the Republican Party, the damage has been done.

Ever since John McCain’s terrible campaign for president, it seems like the Republican Party has been in damage control mode. They’ll come out with some sort of talking point on an issue which they’re so positive will be the thing that finally gets them going again, only to spend the next week or so reeling from those very talking points.
Maybe one day they’ll be a viable party again, but right now they’re just continuously making asses of themselves.
If they really want to be the party of Rush Limbaugh, then it’s no surprise that everything they do is as shrill and counterproductive as one of Rush’s screeds. In order to be a Republican these days, you have to value ideology over all, and adapt the “ends justify the means” attitude that goes with it. Pragmatics, don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.
..just like Mr. Burns would say on the Simpsons.
The GOP is getting whipped like a rented mule these days. First off, the Sotomayor ambush continues to frag the extremist idiots on the Right, all the while driving away the Latino/Latina voters in droves.
Then, the Centrist President nominates another Moderate GOP Representative from the Northeast to a cabinet position he’s EXTREMELY qualified for. This delivers on his campaign promises for a centrist and politically diverse Cabinet, while opening up the seat for a Moderate Democrat to take away from the GOP.

Lastly, the GOP continues to frag anyone who disagrees with the Lord of Oxycotin – this time a moderate Repub who DARED question the GOP Dark Lord of the Airwaves –

I know that Repubs believe in smaller government, but apparently they believe in an equally small political party.
Have at it ….
“So sxp151, at our job interviews we like to ask everyone what their greatest weakness is. We think this makes us cutting edge.”
“Well, sir, and I love your tie, I think my greatest weakness might be that I just care too much about my boss getting bonuses.”
The big Fat Head himself ever so slightly modifies his stance on Sotomayor. Hmmm….

At least I’m guessing that’s what happened.
