Oh Rocky We Miss You

(As do we – promoted by Colorado Pols)

In 2004, Darth Cheney revealed to the dearly departed Rocky Mountain News that Guantánamo detainees revealed that there was a Saddam-Al Qaida link on 9/11. That knowledge went into the bit bucket until the always impressive Jonathan Landay of McClatchy Newspapers dug it up again.

Take it away, Jonathan:

Cheney’s 2004 comments to the now-defunct Rocky Mountain News were largely overlooked at the time. However, they appear to substantiate recent reports that interrogators at Guantanamo and other prison camps were ordered to find evidence of alleged cooperation between al Qaida and the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein – despite CIA reports that there were only sporadic, insignificant contacts between the militant Islamic group and the secular Iraqi dictatorship.

The head of the Criminal Investigation Task Force at Guantanamo from 2002-2005 confirmed to McClatchy that in late 2002 and early 2003, intelligence officials were tasked to find, among other things, Iraq-al Qaida ties, which were a central pillar of the Bush administration’s case for its March 2003 invasion of Iraq.

If the Rocky were still around, I have to think that @RMN_ME would have been on this story like @newtgingrich on @EFCANOW. But what does Denver have now?

@denverpostindc, that’s who.

Do you miss the Rocky as much as I do?

We fight them over there so we don’t fight them here. Do the words “Al Qaida in Iraq” mean anything to you?

As the noose tightens around shooter’s neck, some (gop warrior) still drink the koolaide.

No matter how many “Pelosi knew, she should resign”, “they hate us for our freedom” diversions and canards that the radio and fox yakkers feed the “true believers”, the majority of Americans are paying close attention and are waiting to see if shooter will pay for his crimes.

Even if Cheney is never charged, only the 13% that vote red, any red, don’t look at him as anything but a disgrace.

As a young coward, shooter sought and received 5 deferments. As an aging coward, he ginned up excuses for other young men to fight wars he never had the stomach for.

And still, contrary to all common sense, there are some ideologically blind, uninformed goobers out there buying this conservative drivel.

Because they basically did it to themselves. I miss them as a news source and I’m sorry for the people who lost their jobs. But they refused to evolve and that sealed their fate.

But that’s not what made the institution. It was made by the quality of its reporting.

And with recent news about charging for content and outsourcing reporting to India, I’m afraid the Post, which is already just a shell of its former self, is also headed the way of the dodo bird.

It’s not going to be a matter of which paper won and which one lost, it’s just going to be a matter of which paper died slightly sooner than the other.

had you been in charge at the Rocky? How would you have evolved the paper to keep it a going concern?

Free classifieds with paid promotion – sort of a combination of Craigs List and Google.

Allow posting of news articles by anyone with very general approval by editors (ie it’s readable and nothing clearly wrong in it).

Placement on all pages set by votes like Digg. (You’ll notice editors are changed from God to clerk with these changes).

Individual home pages based on an individuals votes. So votes by those who vote articles similiar to me carry more weight in what I see. And I don’t see anything I am uninterested in (ie I would never see a sports article).

User votes for what upcoming possible stories have the paid reporters working them.

Reporters/editors/etc who consistently get low votes are let go and replaced with someone new.

That’s just off the top of my head.
