New Wrinkle Could Move Fitz-Gerald Closer to Guv

One leading Republican attorney who has handled litigation for the Party believes that an attempt to get a court to remove Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald from the ballot, should she choose to run for re-election in 2006, would be successful.

According to the attorney, Secretary of State Donetta Davidson just got the dates wrong when she issued an opinion earlier this year saying that Fitz-Gerald could run again for re-election. Democratic lawyers are certain that they will beat any campaign challenge to Fitz-Gerald, but the legal challenge could play out differently. Either way, a challenge would come only after Fitz-Gerald submits nomination papers to the Secretary of State in 2006.

Fitz-Gerald is still looming as a potential candidate for governor, and if it looked at all like she might not be able to run for re-election to her senate seat, you can bet she would lean towards jumping in the race for governor.
