Littleton Democrat banks on recovery

By M.E. Sprengelmeyer, Rocky Mountain News

A turnaround in the economy could make congressional Republicans regret their votes against the economic stimulus package.

At least, that’s the hope of Democrat John Flerlage, a political newcomer from Littleton who is gearing up a run against first-term Republican Rep. Mike Coffman in Denver’s southern suburbs.

“For me, it will have to be successful,” Flerlage said of the $787 billion economic recovery package, which failed to get a single Republican vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Coffman, R-Aurora, opposed the package with a series of House speeches leading up to the vote. Coffman questioned little-noticed provisions that he said would “gut” welfare reform measures passed by Congress in 1996. He also argued that much of the spending was “not stimulative in terms of being jobs-producing” and said it would create recurring expenses that would contribute to budget deficits and inflation.

“This legislation will hurt this country,” Coffman told colleagues in a speech earlier this month. “It will hurt us in the short run. It will hurt us in the long run.”

But Flerlage, a commercial airline pilot and retired Marine, said he’s hopeful the stimulus package and other Democratic-sponsored initiatives will help turn around an economy that began disintegrating when a Republican was in the White House.

“I’m hammering on the fact that it’s a long culmination of failed economic policies,” Flerlage said.

  1. I’ve seen Mr. Flerlage out and about at many town halls and forums. I wish he would speak up and out and make more of a presence. He doesn’t seem like a bad guy or a bad candidate at all.

    1. I mean, they spend their lives sitting around, waiting, and then they drive these flying buses.

Do we really want a guy who’s been doing the same old same old his whole life?

      1. AS, not sure why the dig at airline pilots and I don’t know enough about Flerlage to speak to his qualifications for Congress but a quick look at his bio shows a lot more than “sitting around, waiting” or driving “flying buses.”

According to his website Flerlage, or out of proper respect, Lt. Col Flerlage, served our country for 22 years as a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps.

“Over his eleven active-duty years and eleven years in the Reserves, John flew the F/A-18 Hornet and A-4 Skyhawk. He also served in various Squadron and Group level leadership and staff positions and taught classes in world affairs, strategic commitments and the operation of fighters and other tactical aircraft at the Marine aviation advanced tactics school. During his reserve years, John also volunteered and flew missions in support of NATO operations in Bosnia, and in 1996, he was chosen to fly the Hornet aboard the USS George Washington in the first Marine Reserve carrier qualifications to be held in over fifteen years.” ( http://www.flerlageforcongress… )

He does seem to have the generic profile to be strong in CD6 and probably stronger than the other fellow running.  I’d be skeptical of whether that district is ready to turn to a Dem particularly with Tank gone and a relatively well liked Coffman in place, but depending on what happens in DC and the nation the next two years, I suppose anything is possible (if still highly improbable).  It would take a ton of fundraising and the DCCC targeting the seat as much as they’ve targeted CD4 which I don’t know if they’re inclined to do.

Even if a long, long-shot, I’m interested to see what Lt. Col Flerlage does and offers the people of CD6.
