It looks like the Democrats could pick up an extra seat in El Paso County. Rumor has it Ken Berella, (sp?) mayor of Fountain and a former Army soldier, has intentions to run for House District 19. Currently, there are no strong Republican contenders in that district who has interest in running. If this happens, the tides in El Paso County could turn and would be bad for the current Chair of El Paso County GOP.
Remember, HD 19 is the district that is currently held by Richard Decker and is also occupied by all of the land lovers who are aggitated by the Owens who vetoed the Toll Road bill and El Paso Republicans who voted against restrictions on the toll roads. For the first time, I see the Dems taking control in El Paso County.
Not a chance. It is WAY too early to say the Dems will take District 19 on the basis of the first announced candidate. The district is heavily Republican, and they are sure to nominate a strong candidate and this district will remain safely in the R column. But let’s say you are right and the Ds win this seat. Does it really mean the Dems will be “taking control in El Paso County”? This means they would have two seats out of eight, instead of the current one. Get real!
I read One more’s comment to mean that the Dems in EPC were going on the offensive for a change. I don’t think he was seriously advocating that the Dems are going to become the dominant party in EPC simply because they pick up another house seat.

You are absolutely correct! Uh uh just proves my point as to why the Dems will start winning in El Paso County. Let’s not forget that Decker is also term limited and that Barella ran for that seat once before. If the Dems can use the Owens veto on the toll road against the Republicans in this district, teh GOP doesn’t have a chance! Plus, HD 19 represents the Air Force, which has two bases in this district. We could see the tides change.
I hope a Dem doesn’t win house District 19. I lived out in that area for a little while and if a Dem gets it’s hands on it they aren’t going to understand what to do with it. Nearly the entire population living in the area are Republicans and stick to their beliefs. They will put up a fight for what they don’t and what they do want. I just don’t think a Dem knows the kind of life those people out there lead. But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Heavenly…you should stay where you are because while the district is full of Republicans, they are an issued based Repulicans and most in that area will be affected by the toll road, if built. The “Republicans in that district” as you would say have already came out and supported a fund raiser for Wes McKinley because he was a sponsor of the Toll Road bill that would put restrictions on it. You must be caught in your “heavenly” dances if you think Dems can’t win in that area. Rest assured, if the Dems play their cards right, they can take that seat. Since you lived out there, you should know their (residents) frustration with Owens and other El Paso GOP delegations who voted against the property rights toll road bill.

Exactly how did I prove your point? Was it :
1) When I disagreed with your assertion based on party registration (not to mention voting performance), or
2) When I stated that picking up two seats out of eight would not amount to “taking control in El Paso County”.
Please- if you are going to post something, take the time to see that it makes sense.

Cute, but where did I say that I didn’t think the Dems could win. I just said I hope they don’t win. Anyone can win any race with enough money and dirty tricks up their sleeve.
All the Republicans that I know out there haven’t supported Wes Mckinley and it’s a little too early to tell anyway. When it comes down to one Republican vs. one Democrat then I’ll be able to comment on who I think will win. But right now there are people jumping in and dropping out of the race for 19 everyday and until there it gets closer to the actual date it’s hard to say who the peope in 19 will support.
Democrats and Republicans alike are frustrated with Owens, I myself am one of them and I was very involved with the toll road effort so don’t tell me things that I already know. Like I said before when things are more certain the real feelings of the people who live out in that area will come out. Until then we will just have to wait and see.
Uh uh…do you like in that district? Do you even know who Ken Barella is and his background? Do you know what GOP in that district has a chance of winning? Uh uh to prove your ignorance because you think the Republicans can’t lose in El Paso County…need I remind you about Merrifield? If Merrifield enters against JOnes, Jones loses and a Dem will pick up Merrifields vacant seat that’s two. If Berella wins, that’s three. Don’t go thinking that you and the others are “safe” because just as Rome fell, so will El Paso County!
Heavenly… you assume that the Democrats are stuid and they are not. If they were, they wouldn’t have picked up and won in 2004. You obviously were one of those who attended one meeting out of the hundreds that were held. I know for a fact many GOP’s in that district switched their party affiliation from GOP to Democrat because El Paso abandoned them as well as Owens. SO until you get your facts straight, don’t go into hell’d den…you would be better off handing out wings!
I think you just like hearing yourself talk. Who said I wasn’t a Democrat in the first place, I just said I lived in 19 for awhile and I think the people out there would be better suited with a good Republican (not anyone like Decker). I don’t think Democrats are stupid, I think people like you however, are.
You have no idea who I and what I know, so before you go blurting out your silly little facts, stop and think. However, I’m sure you will still post.
This is where I stand. A Republican has a good chance of winning 19 and I hope one does. However, a Democrat could also win if they really tried hard. So there you have it like I said before, when there is one candidate from each side it’ll be easier for everyone to comment. Because right now you never know who’ll enter the race, so you never know who could win. It’s that simple.
Make no mistake about it. HD 19 will be an uphill battle for any Dem. However, there is always the opportunity for the Dem to win.
If the GOP were to nominate someone from the extreme right end of their party, then a moderate Dem would have a much better chance.
I won’t write off the Dem until I know who the GOP candidate is.

Thank you. That was exactly my point. You never know who will win until you know who’s in the race. Everyone has a fair chance until then.
With one exception, Republicans haven’t been running anyone in my District except criminals and extreme right wing crazy people for years. Frankly, after seeing what Republican leadership has done to this state during the last decade, I don’t know why anyone votes for any of ’em.
They have done nothing but lose jobs and throw the state into financial crisis. It’s scandalous.
You people are looney tunes if you think the toll road veto will doom Republicans anywhere, let alone in El Paso. First, Wes McKinley was the house sponsor of a bill whose prime sponsor, in the house it originated it, was a Republican.
Second, almost every Republican, including every single Republican senator, voted for that bill. Owens vetoed it to his own detriment, not that of the party.
Third, Ken Barela got completely trounced by Richard Decker in 2002. And, shall we say, Decker isn’t the most inspiring of candidates. He doesn’t even fit the district – he was a music teacher, if memory serves me right.
The original toll road bill, to facilitate it, won the vote of every house Democrat. The vote to prohibit it got votes from the Dems only after they witnessed the PR disaster.
