Pesky Denver Three

The unlikely saga of the Denver Three goes on, kept alive yet again by their reliable friends at the Denver Post.

Make that the Denver Post editorial board and The Three’s Column One champion Jim Spencer, which some argue brings the news value down a notch. Clearly expressed in both pieces today, however, is a point that we admit doesn’t square cleanly with US Attorney William Leone’s blithe conclusions on the matter.

Jim Spencer disclosed for the first time the name of a museum employee involved in the incident, as well as pretty tacit assertion that the “volunteer” heavy with the earpiece was represented to all as “White House security.”

The Post editorial board made the same charge a slightly sifferent way:

U.S. Attorney William Leone said there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute for impersonation of federal agent. His spokesman, Jeff Dorschner, added that the man didn’t show credentials or say he was a federal agent. Initially the White House described him as a local volunteer but later backpedaled, saying he was part of the “event staff.”

The talking point they’re driving home (nakedly, we might add) is that the Secret Service’s likely involvement in the Denver Three’s ouster is being covered up. Demonstrated, even if not ever really proven, it’s a black eye for the Bush administration.

At this point, the partisan divide closely parallels opinion on the Denver Three. Democrats are outraged, Republicans remind us that half of “Secret Service” is “Secret,” and maybe you’ll understand when you’re President.

  1. Does anyone besides Colorado Pols and the Denver Post care about this story?  Ask ten people on the street about the “Denver Three” and I predict ten blank stares.  I’m glazing over just thinking about it.

  2. I know I don’t.  This story ceased to be interesting about a day after it came out. 

    Three people were booted from an event by someone who may or may not have been this or that.  All the Denver Three really care about is keeping their names in the paper!

    I think if you did a poll about how many people actually care about what happend that day, it’d be a handful of Kerry supporters + the Denver Three.  That’s it!

    That being said, if it would have happend to me at a Kerry event, I’d probably do the same.

  3. I guess that’s a problem we need to address.  When you don’t have equal access to your government, you don’t have a Republic.

    What was candyraver’s Ben Franklin quote again?  “A Republic, if you can keep it.”  Well, I at least intend on keeping it.

    Again….. Get over yourself.

    If you think things are that bad, and the Bush Administration is the cause for all the problems in the world, then get out there, run for office and make a change in the way policies are made, rather than just blogging all day and doing your “Superior Dance” between posts.

    So three libs got caught and tossed before they could stage a disruption. Big Deal!

    It really doesn’t matter that they changed their minds not to cause a disruption at the last minute when their original intent was to disrupt the event. Obviously their intent was known to others, and their attempt was intercepted.

  5. disrupting the words of the president of the united states is unacceptable.  if you have a different opinion, go outside to the ‘free speech’ zone and wave your sign.  or host your own event.

    the thousands of people who attend that event are there to see and hear the president, not three whiny brats who yell only to be trendy and get their names in the paper.

    i’m glad the denver three got thrown out — the timid liberals give up as soon as some punk says leave.

  6. Disrupting the words of the President wasn’t proven or even highly suspected at the time they were evicted.  What’s next?  Do we kick people out of a Presidential speech for having a “Yes on C&D” bumper sticker on their car?

    I’ve been in a “Free Speech” zone; they were completely unacceptable under Clinton, and they’re even more unacceptable now that they’re more common and more remote.  Talk about an Orwellian phrase…

    Maybe we need to be more like the GOP (reference John Bolton: I’m with the Bush campaign, and I’m here to stop the vote!); maybe we need to act more like Operation Rescue and its followers; or maybe we need to act more like Fred Phelps.  Yeah, that’s the ticket…  Not.

For the partisan counter, I’ll throw in: maybe we need to act more like PETA, who trespass on private property; or maybe we need to act more like the “ELF” and burn some SUVs.  Completely unacceptable – all of them.  As is tossing someone out of a public event for expressing a view on a bumper sticker of a car, or maintaining a list of “unacceptable” people (aka members of the North Dakota Democratic Party).

  8. d3: Why would you say something like that about a person you’ve never even met? I’ve gotten to know Alex Young very well and he’s an amazing, passionate man. I don’t agree with his politics (except on a couple issues), but he shows the same energy vigorously pursuing this issue as I’m sure he did at the meeting itself.

    Since there was absolutely no evidence that they were going to cause a disruption, it’s ok to toss them out because they “might”? That’s the kind of government that Hitler and Stalin ran. But I guess I shoudn’t be surprised that anyone who supports this administration would think it’s ok to kick someone out of a public meeting for having a different opinion.

  11. Yes, Candyraver – I was at the event – and I know the facts.  This whole thing, as everyone has figured out, is way overblown.  Its just a topic for Phoenix Rising and other libs to rant about against the President. 

    I honestly feel sorry for all these folks who think that this had something to do with the Bush administration and some sort of conspiracy to suppress free speech.  Here’s a radical thought for all you extremists out there who think we should get crazy over all this stuff………wait……………what if…………..JUST WHAT IF……………the guy was ACTUALLY just an overzealous volunteer taking action on his own without any direction from anyone else??……………..(GASP!!)………

    Truth hurts – I know.

    How about we all move on to some serious topics that dont play into the media plans of Ann Imse and the Denver Three? We could actually TALK about Social Security.

  12. What a stupid discussion… The Rs resort to infantile name calling and pedestrian arguments as to why this isn’t an issue – it is rare that an R makes a coherent, thoughtful comment on this board.  Hopefully none of you have any power beyond attacking ‘libs’ on this board.

    And the Ds can’t seem to wipe up their bleeding hearts, cap their outrage and get over it.

    Yes, this is an issue of civil liberties and the freedom of anyone to tell the President, to his face, that his ideas and policies are generally inconsistent with the ideals of this country AND that that freedom was taken away by some nobody who wants to play Secret Service.  Does anyone expect anything less from this bunch? 

    I could care less about the Denver 3 and am sick of reading about them.  Instead of crying about it, I am going to work my ass off in ’08 to clear the WH of any remanants of Bush/Rove/Cheney/Rice/Bolton/Feith/Libby and that ugly ass dog too.

    Two groups of people.
    1. Liberal Columnists that write for the Denver Pravda
    2.Whiney Libs that give the est of their party a bad name.

    Newsflash: The Bush Administration is not the Big Bad Wolf… Republicans didn’t cause all of the world’s problems…  and the reason that the Democrats and John Kerry lost is that you didn’t have a defined message of what the Democratic party really stands for. 

    You might not like the Bush Administration or the Republican Party, but guess what, we didn’t like the Clinton Administration or the Democratic party, so we beat you at the polls. 

    So the moral here, is rub some dirt on your wounds, find a real candidate and get back in there.

    I think it is a sad statement for our country when it’s leader is so afraid of people who might disagree with him that he and his jackbooted henchmen believe he should never see it.

    I seem to recall an article in the Denver Post by David Harsyani that had all of the details from their blog about staging an “action” at this event.  Could it be that their plans weren’t as secretive as they thought?

    Here’s a newsflash for you, when Criminals plan their crimes, they typically don’t let the police know, that’s why they have a chance of getting away with it. 

    However, based on your past posts, that would be a justification for the criminals to sue to police for preventing the commission of a crime, because they might change their mind halfway through.

    Get a grip…

  24. Great, a completely content-free post– just partisan snearing at anyone who generates bad press for the president.  Was there supposed to be some sort of insider news in there somewhere?  Or did you think you were still talking to freepers?

    Maybe you really don’t want anyone reminded how utterly phony all the social security events were.  Those weren’t public meetings any more than those infomercials selling knives to a studio audience.
