As the Denver Post reports:
A wide-ranging investigation has been launched into allegations that a well-known Pueblo resident has molested many boys over the years, including most recently when he was the manager for Sen. John McCain’s presidential-campaign office in Pueblo.
Under investigation is Jeffrey Claude Bartleson, 52, who was arrested Jan. 29 and then re-arrested Wednesday after a campaign worker in the McCain office told police she believed Bartleson molested one of her sons.
Sgt. Brett Wilson, who heads the Pueblo Police Department’s special victims unit, said today that there are “several active investigations” involving Bartleson…
In June 2003, then-Rep. Scott McInnis praised Bartleson in a tribute at the U.S. House of Representatives.
In the tribute, McInnis noted that “in his capacity as a foster parent, Jeff has helped several youth in the region through his work with the Young Life Association and the El Pueblo Boys and Girls Ranch.”
David Dill, chairman of the Pueblo County Republican Party, said today that although Bartleson headed the McCain campaign office in Pueblo, Bartleson does not hold any position with the Pueblo County Republican Party. He attended a few meetings of the organization, but that was the extent of his involvement, said Dill.
Dill said he believed that Bartleson directed McCain efforts in southern Colorado. State GOP officials said today they had no contact with Bartleson.
We’re not going to get into the usual yucking it up over some new example of GOP sex-scandal schadenfreude. Messing with people’s kids is no laughing matter. No doubt anyone who associated with this man, or aided him in establishing himself in positions of trust, is sufficiently ashamed and introspective today that no gratuitous character plinking is needed.
And as parents who can sometimes be found juggling children in various political settings, well, obviously, it’s horrifying, and our thoughts are with the victims.

One of my duties is to vet adults that want to get involved with inner-city youth. We have a really thorough process, because we have to. Obviously we have a more robust process than a campaign does. But..
When we do catch someone trying to sneak by, I’m always amazed at their resourceful nature, and how diabolical they really are.
But it has nothing to do with their political affiliation. I think this is totally inappropriate for a political blog.
You once demoted a diary of mine because it didn’t have enough of a connection to Colorado politics. Fair enough. You can demote anything you want – it’s your blog.
But to say that this guy’s actions were somehow related to anything political is false. He could have just as easily have been a staffer for a Dem, and it would be just as disgusting for you or anyone else to try to make a political case for it. I saw the story in the news, but I’m really disappointed you posted it as though any one of us wouldn’t try to protect anyone else’s children from a monster like this guy and politics wouldn’t have a thing to do with it.
Where did we say that his actions were ‘related’ to anything political, other than it occurred in a political setting? And we never said or even remotely implied that anyone might have known anything about the man’s alleged crimes before his arrest, or that the outcome would have been any different if it had been a “staffer for a Dem.” There is likely nothing anyone could have done to prevent a predator from doing this, please show us where we alleged otherwise.
That said, it did occur in a political setting, and we don’t have control over the facts as reported.
Frankly, we’re a little stunned at how much you’ve managed to read into what we wrote. Perhaps you are reading somebody else’s blog.
Post away.
The Pols pulled all their punches out of sympathy you obviously never even bothered to read, and if this had been a “Dhimmicrat” you and AS would have had a dozen diaries up about it already and be bitching if every fucking one of them wasn’t promoted.
Who the hell do you think you’re kidding, anyway?
I wouldn’t have posted anything like this, I promise you.
To each their own.
I thought this piece of crap might be Bill Owens’ buddy and Republican Leadership Program graduate Randal D. Ankeney, since they look so much alike. Maybe aged some by his fellow prisoners’ treatment of him? But nope, it is Scott McInnis’ buddy, Jeff Bartleson.
“But to say that this guy’s actions were somehow related to anything political is false”, sayeth,
LaughingDelusional Boy. As Howard Pankratz reports the McInnis praise of Bartleson in the Post:“in his capacity as a foster parent, Jeff has helped several youth in the region through his work with the Young Life Association and the El Pueblo Boys and Girls Ranch.” –Scott McInnis
Does McInnis know what that “work” entailed? Oh well, maybe Ankeney and Bartleson can start a Republican Leadership Program in prison? With Ted Haggard providing the invocation?
Funny how
LaughingDelusional Boy’s ilk thought past associations were so important and made it their centerpiece during the presidential campaign, huh? This jerks alleged actions are far worse than anything Rev. Wright ever did. But when it comes to the “Party of Hypocrites”, we should now just look the other way, eh?Sorry, not delusional – I just find it distasteful to do a victory lap if a child is molested by a monster that happens to work in the office of a particular political party.
You apparently don’t feel that way. Good luck with that.
Too bad you didn’t get that religion earlier in discussions about a man and his minister. And I hope the DA does do a slow and loud victory lap.
That’s a gross misreading of why this is news, and why it’s of interest to political types.
And be honest — if this had been a manager at an Obama office, Drudge would have front-paged it with his siren blaring.
No reason to celebrate when a child gets raped.
Very cute. Done with this thread, guys.
the Boy picks up his tinker-toys and goes home. Ironic, isn’t it, how when all are discussing the perp, the Boy is the only one using the victim for political ends?
According to the Denver Post, he used his position as a campaign manager to lure the son of a campaign co-worker to his home, under the pretense of keeping him overnight in preparation for a trip to a Palin rally the next day. The boy says Bartleson molested him on that overnight.
What a piece of trash. My heart goes out to the children and the families who trusted this guy.
Any word on who else he worked for? I hope I never met this guy!!
With inmates who will give him a lesson on what he has done to others. People who do this are total scum.
and the earlier Pueblo Chieftain article http://coloradopols.com/showCo… :
” . . . in affidavits filed by police investigators in Pueblo District Court, authorities say that the most recent complaints follow a pattern involving Bartleson that dates to 1982.” There are unknown numbers of victims of this man. Very sad.
Let’s hope that this time the Pueblo police and DA (and whatever other jurisdictions this molester may have acted in) get it right.
