  1. POTUS halts construction of Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, after Federal Judge refused to stop it.

Winona LaDuke, speaking on the Canadian network CBC, articulates the views of the "Protectors".

Native activists, in the name of protecting Missouri river water,  and sacred burial sites, have been facing off with bulldozers, attack dogs, pepper spray, rent-a-cops, and now the National Guard.

This temporary halt to construction is a victory for the protesters and alternative news media, after traditional media refused (initially) to cover the story.

Lawrence O'Donnell had a good summary:

  2. yes  I am very glad that POTUS intervened.  Not only have and are the Amerindians getting a raw deal, but this whole thing shows how hypocrital the Repugs are on the emminent domain principle.  In the past that idea was most often used for roads, power lines, and other infrastructure for the “ common good”.  Now it's a common business tool.

This is something that the Repugs claim to hate, but, like I said it is a business tool.  That, in their minds, seems to trump citizen or native rights. (no pun intended).
    Have a great day everyone!

    1. Thanks also to the Dept. of Interior and especially the Dept. of the Army for  its role in halting this travesty on Army Corps land. You know. The army and all those reduced to rubble generals Trump promises to fire.  Can't wait to see how military "supporting" righties will spin this one.

Trump can keep his "great leader", Putin. Under Obama's leadership this all happened within minutes of the court ruling because he listened to an abused, betrayed people standing up to demand some small measure of justice, respect and relief which is what a great free world leader is supposed to do…. not "control" his county and its people.

Next that private security force and those who sent them should face criminal charges.

  3. So why don't we hear as much about this as we do about the Clinton Foundation or the e-mails?

Donald Trump was in a tuxedo, standing next to his award: a statue of a palm tree, as tall as a toddler. It was 2010, and Trump was being honored by a charity — the Palm Beach Police Foundation — for his “selfless support” of its cause.

His support did not include any of his own money.

Instead, Trump had found a way to give away somebody else’s money, and claim the credit for himself.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/how-donald-trump-retooled-his-charity-to-spend-other-peoples-money/2016/09/10/d

    1. Trump is a genius — he solicits a $150,000 donation from another foundation, turns around to donate the exact amount to the Police Foundation, and the charges the cop charity for renting his own property to host the gala for nearly double the gift! Sweet profit at no personal expense… what a guy!

On the night that he won the Palm Tree Award for his philanthropy, Trump may have actually made money. The gala was held at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, and the police foundation paid to rent the room. It’s unclear how much was paid in 2010, but the police foundation reported in its tax filings that it rented Mar-a-Lago in 2014 for $276,463.

  4. Gail Schwartz up first..running through her resume..she is a very competent speaker

Turns to his record….lays it out. Much applause..

Tipton begins with a thank you to military and first responders.

Makes a competent, however, inaccurate opening statement …there appears to be an even mix of left and right leaning audience.

  5. Pretty tame so far until Schwartz slams banks over lending policies to students..

Tipton is having a hard time generating much applause. Starting to attack…..

He just went after Obama …rowdies getting rowdy…

  6. Scwartz just scored on the benefits of ACA.

Tipton is opening up the can of redmeat..tossing out talking points

Gail contradicts him and draws big applause

The question is what will be different if he goes back to DC…

Gail goes after him and congress..calls him out for being part of the problem…

  7. She asks about Thompson Divide O&G development. He starts making accusations about her killing jobs.

His turn..he asks if she wants to apologize to coal miners.

He is still trying to use Clean Air Clean Jobs to imply she cost jobs with it.

  8. Excellent closing remarks by Schwartz.. She lists all the things that won't happen if he is re-elected

Tipton goes back to the "Winners and losers " shtick. Getting smarmy now..wraps up with "All of the above energy pablum…

  9. Senate debate underway…Glenn gets Big applause…Bennet too

    Williams first…great bio…Horatio Alger story.

    Nice opening..warm applause..

Glenn speaks well …mentions military service

Mentions Iran deal…".trust has been broken"

  10. Bennet thanks everyone …including opponents.

Touts his oily accomplishments..Jordan Cove …crude export ban repeal. Talks about the importance of bi-partisanship..go figure.

  11. 1st question about Soc sec.

Williams answers first. Hard to follow…Says SS is doomed I think.

Glenn says nothing substantial…illicits cheers from supporters. Says Bennet cost 1200 jobs with regulations.

    Bennet defends his record well.

Williams yells it is time for something different.

  12. Glenn says repeal ACA because rates are up and companies are leaving

Says he is doing Bennets job…listening to constituents.

Bennet says he has spent much time on western slope with constituents..

  13. Glenn challenges Bennet to Town hall abou.t health care…

Question …should SCOTUS vacancy be filled?..Bennet very demonstative on his answer…yes….Big applause!

Williams says Senate has right to NOT ACT….

  14. Next 2 questions demonstrate Bennets' experience. Opponents lack thereof.

Williams offers opt out of SS ..

Glenn Slams Bennet..says Bennet  doesn't understand social security program

  15. The same people who spent the past day in faux-anguish because Clinton called them "deplorable" are now giddy as fuck that she left a 9/11 memorial service because she was feeling dizzy.

Any Trump supporter who claims they are concerned about Clinton's health is lying. They are fucking ecstatic at the idea of Clinton being in poor health.

Trump supporters aren't racist or xenophobic or sexist. They're just assholes.

      1. Their assholery just needs a target. They don't give a fuck who it is as long as they can be an asshole to prove how much they love "freedom."

And where do they get off being offended by being called "deplorable"? I thought they were against being PC.

    1. HRC left the ceremony early, saying that she was "overheated". After a rest at her daughter's apartment, she appeared much better. Probably nothing more than the effects of standing still on concrete for two hours. Even if she does have a physical condition that periodically requires her to sit or rest, we've had great Presidents who were paralyzed or in poor health. There is really no evidence of a serious physical health concern for the Democratic nominee.

For Trump, however, there are real concerns about his mental health. If elected, his narcissism could make him a danger to the health of millions of people in the US, and around the world.

      1. For Trump, however, there are real concerns about his mental health. If elected, his narcissism could make him a danger to the health of millions of people in the US, and around the world. –

Not to mention the possibility that the military and security communities might view his election as an imminent threat to our democracy and feel it necessary to overthrow his administration to save what's left.

        1. My mother-in-law recovered from pneumonia in her late 90s and went on to die in her sleep at 105. At the time we were actually asked if they should treat her. Not extraordinary measures, life support, etc. Just … you know… antibiotics and ordinary treatment like that. We were floored they asked. Guess they thought at her age maybe we should just call it a day. Well, we didn't, she got better and was good as new and at 30 years younger no need to think HRC is finished either, much as Trump would like her to be. She'll be fine.

          1. I have had pneumonia four times in my short life–PCP type twice when I was 60, I'm pushing 70 rather hard, and am figuring on pushing 100 around a little bit.

          2. It's not about her having pneumonia, which likely is no big deal.  It's about playing into a perception that she lacks the ability to be honest about things by being dishonest about what's going on.  Saying you're overheated when you've been diagnosed with walking pneumonia is just another example for folks to latch onto, as David Axelrod noted:

Antibiotics can take care of pneumonia. What's the cure for an unhealthy penchant for privacy that repeatedly creates unnecessary problems?

            — David Axelrod (@davidaxelrod) September 12, 2016

Leading to, now, 24+ hours of news stories about it and forcing the campaign to do this:

Clinton campaign admits 'we could have done better' handling pneumonia news

“We could have done better yesterday,” wrote Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri on Monday, after some Democrats began questioning whether the campaign had been fully transparent in its weekend accounts of her health.

“In retrospect, we could have handled it better in providing more information. That’s on us. We regret that,” added press secretary Brian Fallon.

  16. In following up on my rather sketchy notes from last nights' Club 20 debates, I have a few impressions and observations….with your kind indulgence…..

Lilly Tang Williams is a fiery, though difficult to understand, speaker whose Libertarian views seem to be heartfelt. She will take a few votes away from Glenn…not that it will matter.

Glenn and his campaign are very energetic, passionate, and committed to their candidate. Sadly, for them, they are saddled with an ideology he simply cannot sell. While his campaign is motivated and is doing some things right, their candidate will not catch on…

Senator Bennet has learned "The Way of the  Washington Warrior", quite well and is poised and cool, except when he ratchets it up for a minute to defend his record. I chalk his nearly constant pandering to Republicans (mentioning the word bi-partisan as often as possible) as the simplest way to cement his victory. Neither of his opponents will appeal to the broad reach of Colorado Republicans, particularly on the western slope and in other rural areas of the state. He also seemed to want to mention Jordan Cove and the "oil export repeal" as often as possible. That was to be expected, given the location and the audience.

Senator Bennet will be re-elected. There is not much more to say about that.

The Schwartz-Tipton debate was much more interesting to me, not only because of my personal interest ( I have known Senator Schwartz since working with her on O&G legislation a decade ago), but also because it isn't nearly the foregone conclusion that is the Senate race.

I have watched both candidates debate and make public appearances for many years. The typical approach taken by Tipton is to bully his opponent on stage from the outset. This technique will never work on Gail Schwartz. It did not last night.

Tipton is a tall, lanky, cowboy-looking, businessman who has, like Senator Bennet, learned the turf and is very comfortable on stage. He dispenses bullshit and baseless attacks with equal aplomb. This is the third time he has towered over his vertically-challenged opponent. To many of his supporters, that visual actually supports their image of him as "one of them". That dynamic suffers when the object of his disdain is  a "very nice lady". He comes off clearly as the bully he is, not the "local boy" against the "city slicker"…which, in my view, aided him enormously in previous elections.

As I have previously pointed out, I have known Senator Schwartz for a long time. Subsequently, you may be forgiven for discounting my assessment of her and her campaign.

I think, though, that the Tipton ad about a devastated North Fork Valley in Delta county, and trying to blame State Senator Schwartz for it, has been thoroughly de-bunked. This phony ad shows a very serious concern on the part of Tiptons' campaign.

Tiptons' claim that Sen. Schwartz' support of the "Clean Air, Clean Jobs Bill" had something to do with the closure of the coal mines there is pure fantasy, but one being echoed across "coal country". It isn't true. The coal industry is being phased out of our energy economy and it is the natural gas industry that is the chief culprit, not environmentalists and their regulations. Yes…renewables are, indeed, a factor, but pales in effect compared to the headlong rush to replace coal for power generation and heat.

Senator Schwartz is a genuine public servant. She has worked hard for her constituents for decades. She has the most important characteristics a legislator can possess…honor and honesty. By contrast, the incumbent has shown himself to be willing to stoop very low to attack her. His record is paper thin…Senator Schwartz is shining a light on that record …and voters can see right through it.

(note…I am in no way connected with the Schwartz campaign.)

    1. By contrast…Gary Harmon in the Daily Sentinel. Looks like we might have attended different events…smiley

      By Gary Harmon
      Sunday, September 11, 2016

Former State Sen. Gail Schwartz, the challenger to U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Colo., portrayed him Saturday as “part of the problem” in a do-nothing Congress, then agreed with him on the plan to pipe natural gas from Colorado to Oregon and praised his handling of forest-health issues.

Schwartz, a Democrat from Crested Butte, and Tipton, a Republican from Cortez, faced off in a debate before the Western Slope lobbying and promotional organization Club 20 to represent the 3rd Congressional District, which includes 39 counties on the Western Slope and much of southern Colorado.

Schwartz, 67, who served two terms in the state Senate ending in 2015, cited a bipartisan record there, “While Rep. Tipton spent his time in Washington shutting down the government.”

The 3rd Congressional District doesn’t “need bridge burners, they actually need bridge builders,” Schwartz said.

Tipton, 59, retorted that he passed all his measures with bipartisan support and blamed the Senate for failing to pass House measures and place them on the president’s desk.

“You maybe need to be running against Bennet,” Tipton said, referring to Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat who has been in the Senate during the time that Tipton has been in the House.

Schwartz committed to support the Jordan Cove project, which includes a pipeline that would connect the Piceance Basin of northwest Colorado with Oregon and then carry natural gas to Pacific Rim customers.

“I appreciate Gail’s support of my legislation,” Tipton said.

The two had different approaches on other energy-related issues, as well as immigration and Social Security.

State legislation supported by Schwartz has harmed business and contributed to the problems of the coal industry, Tipton said.

“Do you know how much your fuel bills have gone up?” Tipton said. “Part of it was her legislation.”

Many of the coal-mining job losses in the North Fork of the Gunnison River Valley were because of a mine fire, and “I showed up when one of the mines was on fire,” Schwartz said.

“I do apologize,” she said in referring to the frustrations of the coal industry in the North Fork.

Schwartz cited her support for “Dreamers,” or young people brought to the United States as children.

“Those are our future,” she said, calling for reforms.

“There is a remarkable work force living among us in the shadows. We know that industries including agriculture are in need of help and support.”

Both candidates said they supported Social Security.

“Young people today don’t believe it will be there for them,” Tipton said.

“We have to stop balancing the budget on the backs of our children,” Schwartz said. “We need to balance it on the backs of the corporate citizens, especially those who are shipping jobs out of this country.”

Schwartz criticized the Republican-controlled Congress for failing to move a bill to fund efforts against the Zika virus, and Tipton said Schwartz had been of no support when the federal government demanded water rights from ski areas.

“I protected the ski industry,” Tipton said. “You weren’t there, I was.”

      1. Nice summation, Duke. Harmon was his usual lazy suck-up-to-power self, so don't worry about it.

Gail did well. She's feisty and Tipton is a bully. Note to Schwartz staff: fully check out mike volume beforehand. Those of us in the cheap seats in back couldn't hear her very well. And get her a stool so Tipton doesn't tower over her and so there's more than her head showing above the podium.

What struck me was the light GOP turnout. Many of the standard party foot soldiers were missing. Could it be, even in Mesa County, a lack of enthusiasm for the top of the ticket? Perhaps the same for the Senate race? Possibly an overconfidence that Tipton will cruise to re-election?

        1. Thanks, Gertie

What struck me was the light GOP turnout. Many of the standard party foot soldiers were missing.

True that. They are a pretty demoralized bunch, I think.

  17. From an open letter to Trump oped. Michael Morell was acting director and deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2010 to 2013. Mike Vickers was the undersecretary of defense for intelligence from 2011 to 2015.

At home, Putin has jailed and killed political opponents. He has jailed and killed journalists. He has neutered the Russian media to the point that he is in complete control of the message reaching the Russian people. He has the popularity that you so admire only because he determines what the Russian people hear about him and his government. Do you support Putin’s violation of Russian law and his tramping of the civil rights of his populace, explicitly protected in the Russian constitution?

One of the more interesting questions is who is the biggest loser from Putin’s policies? Take Putin’s actions in Ukraine. One set of losers, of course, was the Ukrainian people, who had their aspirations crushed. Another was the West, particularly the United States, which looked impotent to stop the Russian aggression. But the biggest loser was the Russian people — because Putin has ended any hope of integrating the Russian economy with that of the West, Russia’s only hope for the future. Given this, do you still think Putin is a great leader?

At the Commander-in-Chief forum on Wednesday, you said that as long as Putin says nice things about you, you will say nice things about him. That is not a standard on which a candidate, or a president, should make policy decisions. That should not even enter your calculus. Your only question should be, “What is in the best interests of the United States?”

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/morell-and-vickers-an-open-letter-to-donald-trump/2016/09/10/1af395dc-776b-11e6-be4f-3f42f2e5a49e_story.html?utm_term=.dfee6ba1f8d9

    1. Which reminds me that if elected Trump would be a mercurial, fascist dictator.  You know why Trump won the Republican nomination?  Because North Korea's Kim Jong-un wasn't eligible to run…

      1. Actually, I see more than a couple similarities in their personalities, not the least of which is the value of flattery in getting along with Trump …and surviving Kim Jong Un….
